Spring VHF/UHF Field day.

One week to go to the Spring VHF and Above Field Day which is happening this year on the weekend of 25th November from 01:00 UTC to 26th November 00:59 UTC, with the usual 3 hour offset for our Western Australian friends.

This event is a great opportunity to dust off that VHF/UHF and microwave gear and get out into the great outdoors and make some contacts.

All bands are used from 6M and upwards as far as you dare. There are many categories in this event, single band, 4 band, 8hr section, 24 hour section and there is even a section for base station operation, something for everyone. Why not head out and find a nice spot, set up a portable station and you may be surprised at the results.

Usual frequencies 52.525, 146.500, 439.000, 1296.150, 2403.150, 3398.150 and 10,369.150 all on FM with SSB as an option if conditions suit.

There will be a few people out and about in various parts of Tasmania and you just never know who you may make contact with.

VKCL or your favourite log program will help keep things in order and make the process of submitting logs rather painless.

Good luck and hope to hear you on the bands.

QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

The current list of cards held as at 10 November is in the email version of the broadcast. I have just received another package of QSL Cards and they will be listed in next weeks email version of the broadcast.

If I am holding card(s) for you and you would like them mailed to you rather then being delivered on an opportunity basis please send me some stamps. Thanks to those who have sent stamps. While SAE's are OK, I prefer stamps as I can then provide an appropriate envelope to suit the number of cards.

Herman has a copy of the Log File for VK7WIA (716 QSO's) and will be getting cards ready to distribute in the next several weeks or so. At a $1.20 per card for direct mail it will be expensive so will likely send VK cards to the various States Inwards QSL Bureau. If you want your card direct please send me a stamp. As usual happy to send VK7 cards to the regular distribution teams or distribute them on an opportunity basis. Herman asks to please let him know by email, if you want a QSL Card or not.

If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Thank you to those Amateurs who have been in contact with Herman about their QSL card(s) listing.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
NW Tassie Amateur Repeater Group Net 3rd year anniversary

Last Wednesday night was the 3rd anniversary of the Net held on Wednesday nights, on the VK7RMD repeater at Penguin.

The Net was initially started to help Amateurs to interact with others during the COVID period.

Mt Duncan was chosen, as it has a large radio footprint from far NW Tassie, back into the hills south of Mt Duncan, and able to be accessed in the Launceston area. and from many locations using a Handheld.

The Net has 5 to 10 regulars from a wide area, VK7MAD Andy at Montagu, VK7BV Terry on a handheld south of Ulverstone, amateurs from Launy including VK7PAK, VK7PD, VK7NSS, and a persistent VK7RC Ross, whose uses the Net nights to fine tune beams he has made, to enable him better access to the repeater from his Launy QTH.

Other regulars are VK7HSC, VK7BYL, VK7WP and VK7KT and others.

We also have a few listeners, amateurs who no longer transmit, or some who dont have amateur licences, who enjoy the evenings banter. And may report in via social media or text.

When the propagation is running we enjoy having VK3s join in, with Brodie VK3MAP a regular.

We run a round robin net, giving everyone a chance to have a say, comment, ask questions whether radio related or on any other topic.

A big thank you to those who support the net and each other, and we will continue to run the net every Wednesday night, while people join in. and thanks to Shirley VK7HSC who has stepped in as net controller when Im unavailable

The last technical night update will be carried over to next weeks broadcast due to club commitments at this years Equine Endurance Ride 24 hour State Championships held at Sassafras. This is the major Equine Endurance Ride event for the year commencing at Friday midnight for 24 hours. When this broadcast goes to air on Sunday, hopefully we will be packing up after another successful weekend of providing emergency radio communications and ride tracking. More to follow next week.

For those of us that may not be aware the Ben Lomond repeater VK7RBH is temporarily off air. Unfortunately we cant blame Optus, hihi. This one is our problem and I will hand over to Tony VK7YBG for an update on his Ben Lomond Trip:

“As most of you are aware we had interference on VK7RBH that was ongoing and was threatening to cause battery issues, so a small team went to the site to rectify the issue.

We had a good day and all went to plan, the coaxes on the tower were secured with stainless clamps, sheath damage on the coax repaired with self-amalgamating tape, all other site checks and clean-up went ok, VK7RBH removed from site for 7MHz split and upgrades. Some heavy roof damage was evident from falling flag ice and will need some attention in the near future

I was lucky to have a good crew yesterday and the timing of the thunderstorm and our travels went smoothly resulting in a bonus coffee break at the shop at the village.

Thanks go to Wayne and Kathy Tyrill, Stuart Kincade and Colin Fuller for their attendance and hard work.

There is work on VK7REC Snow Hill to be sorted, but it is currently operational. The next trip will be to Mt. Arthur for a big site clean-up and rubbish removal, finish the rigging on the small tower so we can mount antennas on it, and a general site check.”

Thank you Tony for the repeater update and as always “Normal services will be restored as soon as possible”.

NTARC QSL Cards - Andrew VK7DW, our QSL manager has advised me that the following QSL cards are available for collection. VK7s AT, BO, AU, GC, DON, JFD, KPA, KW, RC and ZR. If you just heard your call-sign then there are cards waiting at the NTARC club rooms for collection on the next Coffee morning or Technical Night. Thank you Herman for your continued support regarding QSL deliveries and thank you Andrew for the update.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://www.youtube.com/live/6AxCuaBZhro

We started the night with Andrew VK7HPC who has recently had an AMPRNet Adventure. Andrew uses Aussie Broadband and they have provision BGP routing and he showed the BGP records that Aussie Broadband broadcast in the 44 address space. Andrew showed the AMPRNet portal and went through the registration process and the simple modem configuration. He then described what he will use the allocation for - SDR, ADSB, AIS, FT8, webSDR and maybe packet radio. Justin talked about the other amateurs in VK7 that have AMPRNet allocations - VK7HDM and VK7HSE.

Justin then showed some hysteric sorry historic Baycom-like Modem that he built late 1980s - early 1990s - 300/1200 baud using the world modem chip.

We took a look at the Hitchhikers Guide to Packet Radio in VK5 circa 1993 and the ARRL Packet Radio book and finished with the NOSIntro Book by Phil Karn KA9Q and gave some history.

We then took another look at the RadioBerry SDR with improvements and PiHPSDR interface.

Justin then showed his recently created Mini-Variac 0-240VAC at 0.6A with voltmeter and circuit and we finished with future events.

This week's show we will be focusing on all those magazines we have been postposing and some other interesting SDR items. See you there or on the stream.

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/

We also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.

Technology News
Brightest flash ever disturbed Earth's atmosphere last year

Quickly nicknamed the "BOAT"for Brightest Of All Timethe flash lasted just seven minutes but its afterglow was visible to amateur astronomers for seven hours.

The flash activated lightning detectors in India and triggered instruments that normally study explosions on the sun called solar flares.

It also affected long wave radio communications in the lower ionosphere, a section of Earth's upper atmosphere around 60 to 350 kilometers (37 to 217 miles) above the surface.
