ALARA NEWS
ALARAMeet 2023
ALARAmeet was last weekend, and we had 52 people registered. They came from all over Australia, with a couple from New Zealand. It was lovely for everyone to get together, as it was 6 years since our last ALARAmeet in Cairns. We welcomed people who had been to every ALARAmeet, some who had only been to Cairns before, and many newbies also. Everyone had a good weekend with a variety of activities, and plenty of food. The evening speakers, Alison Alexander, Tasmanian Historian, and Phil Tyson, from Sound Preservation Association of Tasmania gave interesting talks at the dinners.
Thanks to REAST for their support, the Mystery History tour, the Open Day and the Gourmet BBQ. Special thanks to Peter VK7KPC for bringing his equipment from Evandale to make the fox hunt a success.
Looking forward to ALARAâ€Ös 50th birthday celebrations in Melbourne, July 2025.

Contest news
Spring VHF/UHF Field day.
Well the days are getting longer thanks to daylight savings, and with that the higher bands are starting to percolate. The Spring field day is happening this year on the weekend of 25th November from 01:00 UTC to 26th November 00:59 UTC, with the usual 3 hour offset for our Western Australian friends.
This event is a great opportunity to dust off that VHF/UHF and microwave gear and get out into the great outdoors and make some contacts.
All bands are used from 6M and upwards as far as you dare. There are many categories in this event, single band, 4 band, 8hr section, 24 hour section and there is even a section for base station operation, something for everyone. Why not head out and find a nice spot,set up a portable station and you may be surprised at the results.
Usual frequencies 52.525, 146.500, 439.000, 1296.150, 2403.150, 3398.150 and 10,369.150 all on FM with SSB as an option if conditions suit.
There will be a few people out and about in various parts of Tasmania and you just never know who you may make contact with.
VKCL or your favourite log program will help keep things in order and make the process of submitting logs rather painless.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets
A net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZAB, DMH, EV, ZBX and PD all sharing nearly thirty photos.
The various subjects were:
The continuing series on repeater sites and this week featuring VK7RBH in the Ben Lomond National Park. This is the highest repeater site in Tasmania. Even though it was the middle of summer the crew had thermal gear on and everything was in cloud. There were also phots of the ski tows and “Dumbo” the snow cat vehicle
More racing aircraft of the 1920s – this time seaplanes that use pontoons as their landing gear and the “Supermarine S6B" competing for the Schneider Trophy

The current list of cards held as at 10 November is in the email version of the broadcast. I have just received another package of QSL Cards and they will be listed in next weekâ€Ös email version of the broadcast.
If I am holding card(s) for you and you would like them mailed to you rather then being delivered on an opportunity basis please send me some stamps. Thanks to those who have sent stamps. While SAE's are OK, I prefer stamps as I can then provide an appropriate envelope to suit the number of cards.
Herman has a copy of the Log File for VK7WIA (716 QSO's) and will be getting cards ready to distribute in the next several weeks or so. At a $1.20 per card for direct mail it will be expensive so will likely send VK cards to the various States Inwards QSL Bureau. If you want your card direct please send me a stamp. As usual happy to send VK7 cards to the regular distribution teams or distribute them on an opportunity basis. Herman asks to please let him know by email, if you want a QSL Card or not.

We can start this week on a happy note, it was great to see Kevin VK7KR, at the Friday morning coffee session. Kevin dropped into the club for a cuppa and a chat with many familiar faces, he was also bearing gifts of Kenwood manuals. These will happily go into the clubs reference archives. Thank you Kevin the donation is much appreciated, and it was excellent to catch up.
Now the following item is a bit convoluted, it came from an e-mail I received from an amateur that was visiting New Zealand. It is in regards to a “not so short” video posted by a Victorian amateur, who surely all of us have heard of, Peter Parker VK3YE. Peter was demonstrating a rather neat little simple regenerative receiver he had made. The received audio was excellent but strangely familiar, he was listening live to the NTARC Wednesday night Technical Net hosted by our very own Nic VK7WW, under the club call sign of VK7TAZ on 80 metres. The discussion itself was an excellent discourse on Antennas used for the 80 Metre band and well worth a listen in its own right.
Thank you to Jordan VK3ACU for noticing the video and posting it onto the Tech Netâ€Ös Discord channel for viewing. There you are, “full circle” back to VK7.
The video is worth watching if only for the fact the receiver was adorned with a “steam punk style tuning knob” providing the operator with a smooth tuning control.

December End of Year Activities
REAST will be celebrating the end of a very successful 2023 with a free BBQ, car boot sale and fox hunts on the Queens Domain.
This will be taking place on Sunday December 3rd from 11am at the Queens Domain clubrooms.
Bring along any car boots that you would like to sell and as a bonus for attendees you might possibly put some some radio equipment within the boots and sell that as well….HIHI!
We are looking to run some fox hunts around the top of the Queens Domain and will have some prizes for those lucky enough to find those pesky little foxes.
If you are intending to come along please let our Secretary know so we can have some idea of the number of snags, patties and special food requirements that we will need to cater for - just drop and email to: secretary@reast.asn.au.

We started with the ALARAMeet Wrap-Up with Margaret ZL2YF and Ken ZL4KD
Margaret started by describing what happened on Friday 3rd Nov leading up to registration Friday afternoon. On Saturday 4th Nov proceedings started with the Welcome from Michelle VK2AYL and in the Morning there was a trip to Salamanca Market. In the afternoon there was a morse code bracelet creation session and Margaret made her callsign. Shirley VK5YL talked about the ANZA net and Echolink and then there was a talk by Marija VK5MAZ on parks activations, this was fiished with a talk by Sue VK5AYL and her creation of the Parks & Peaks application.
The Saturday dinner menu was shown which was magnificent and the guest speaker was Alison Alexander - historian about the Female Factory that was visited on the Sunday morning. There was also a Bonnet Parade and judging on Saturday night.
On Sunday 5th November everyone got onto a bus and went to the Female Factory and everyone learned about life at the factory. For Margaret it was quite confronting as women were not treated well in those times and thank goodness things have changed.
The bus then took everyone up to the REAST Clubrooms for a gourmet lunch with fox hunts and great food.
Sunday afternoon was a trip to the historic village of Richmond and this lead into another scrumptious Sunday dinner - it was spectacular!
Justin went through the items on the dinner table and the registration packs and then Margaret then talked about the dinner speaker on the Sunday night was Phil Tyson from the Sound Preservation Society of Tasmania and his sound and pictures presentation on women in Tasmanian broadcast industry.
Ken outlined the Mystery History Radio Tour aspects that he found interesting on the Saturday afternoon and the activities on the Monday for those that have been staying in Tasmania.
A huge thank you to Margaret ZL2YF and Ken ZL4KD for coming along and taking us through their experience of ALARAMeet 2023.
Rex VK7MO then updated us on his latest Auroral Propagation update about the 5/6 November event.
Rex outlined the maximum and minimum levels on 6 and 2 metres - there were 1005 decodes on 6m and 908 decodes on 2m.
Rex outlined the KEOGRAM and the capture of the Aurora on the 5 November and the strength of the Kp index.
Brodie VK3MAP is using two different versions of WSJT on two different computers and we played the audio file at -2dB and +11dB and getting different doppler results which is highly confusing.
Rex showed the correlation with the Kp index, Auroral Oval and decodes throughout the event. Rex went through his findings and conclusions and issues with doppler.
This week's show we have a talk by Andrew VK7HPC on setting an AMPRNet Packet node, some more on the RadioBerry, a mini-Variac and if time permits the latest DUBUS and Lo-Key Magazines.

Technology News
Satellite tech provides state-wide connectivity for WA Police
The Western Australian Police Force has announced that it will soon become the first law enforcement agency in the world to integrate low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology with its current communication network, giving officers high-speed internet anywhere in the state. The technology will be accessible from 550 WA Police vehicles and close to 130 regional stations, benefiting day-to-day patrols as well as specialist teams such as the Regional Operations Group, Tactical Response Group and Regional Enforcement Unit.
Making up one-third of the Australian continent, WA has one of the largest police jurisdictions in the world â€ö yet just 26% of the state has mobile phone or radio coverage. The $8.5 million upgrade will enable police operating in remote locations to instantly send and receive mission-critical information, including automatic number plate recognition data and real-time emergency alerts. It also means officers will be able to livestream body-worn and vehicle dashboard camera footage to the Perth-based State Operations Command Centre, as well as aircraft and security camera vision.
In a recent 12-week trial, officers working from isolated police stations in Kintore, Balgo, Burringurrah, Kalumburu and Jigalong benefited from access to high-speed internet. LEO communication equipment was also tested by Water Police and during high-profile operations such as Exmouthâ€Ös Total Solar Eclipse event in April.
“This high-tech upgrade will boost the ability of police to solve crimes and coordinate large-scale emergency responses like remote searches for missing people,” said WA Police Minister Paul Papalia.
“For the first time, officers will have high-speed internet no matter where they are in the state, meaning regional WA police will have the same level of connectivity as their metropolitan colleagues.
“Being able to livestream vehicle dashcam and body-worn camera vision will … improve situational awareness for officers on the frontline, helping them to make informed decisions during emergency situations.”
Police Commissioner Col Blanch added, “Going forwards, the Western Australia Police Force will have the best communications capability of any jurisdiction in Australia, if not the world.
“We can now … live stream body-worn cameras and dashcams from the State Operations Command Centre in Perth and provide specialist support to our frontline officers anywhere in the state, at any time.
“Real-time communications means a real-time capability to respond, 24/7.”
