I was aware of that page and you are correct that I assumed it meant
10 minutes with no use. I propose the text on that web page be
replaced with the below text. I have slightly edited the intro,
rewrote the middle and added new information, and left the last
paragraph alone completely:

SO-50 includes a V/u FM repeater operating with a 145.850 MHz uplink
and 436.795 MHz (+/- 10 KHz) downlink. The repeater is available to
amateurs worldwide. To use the repeater it must first be turned on by
transmitting a carrier with a 74.4 Hz PL tone for two seconds. Once it
is turned on you must use a 67 Hz tone to communicate through it.
After 10 minutes, even if it is in use, the repeater will turn off. To
turn it back on transmit a carrier with a 74.4 Hz PL tone for two
seconds again.

Over populated regions of the world, usually a knowledgeable station
on the fringe of the region who is in range of the satellite before
the majority of the region will turn the repeater on, but not always.
Also, usually a knowledgeable station will turn the repeater on again
after it turns off in between a pass over the region, but not always.

It is best to be able to turn it on yourself if needed, especially if
you are in a less populated region, are on the fringe of a populated
region, or operate during times when the satellite is likely to have
little activity, like late at night or early in the morning.

The repeater has no hang time so you cannot tell if you are
successfully accessing the repeater by listening for a short carrier
or courtesy beep after your transmissions like you can with most
terrestrial repeaters. Assuming you can hear others on the repeater,
the best way to verify you are successfully accessing the repeater is
by using a full-duplex setup and listening for your voice on the
downlink while you transmit on the uplink.

The repeater consists of a miniature VHF receiver with sensitivity of
-124dBm, having an IF bandwidth of 15 KHz. The receive antenna is a
1/4 wave vertical mounted in the top corner of the spacecraft. The
receive audio is filtered and conditioned then gated in the control
electronics prior to feeding it to the 250mW UHF transmitter. The
downlink antenna is a 1/4 wave mounted in the bottom corner of the
spacecraft and canted at 45 degrees inward.

Message-ID: <d6dc35d29b7d9cb55ff8bdfe2f8cd222@???????.???>

Today, on the SO-50 pass, I tried using the Arrow diplexer (duplexer?)
to enable full-duplex using two handhelds. As most on this forum know,
if you use two handhelds with the Arrow antenna, the third harmonic of
the 2m uplink will desense the 70cm handheld, so you can't hear
yourself.

So, I hooked up what is normally the antenna end of the diplexer to the
2m uplink radio and the 2m radio end of the diplexer to the 2m part of
the Arrow antenna. My hope was that this would suppress the third
harmonic of the 2m uplink enough so that it wouldn't desense the 70cm
handheld. The 70cm radio end of the diplexer was left unconnected.

It didn't seem to work. I made contacts but I still didn't hear myself
on 70cm.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and what results you got.

The android app has had it since about November if you opt-in in the
settings. I'm not sure if they've done the same thing for the iOS app.

I use this setup but I have the common port of the duplexer attached to the
radio and the 2m port goes to the antenna. The second radio connects
directly to the 70cm part of the Arrow.

That being said, my IC7100 will cause desense during TX on some RX
frequencies for SO-50 on my TH-D74A. The Btech UV-5X3 or TH-D72 do not
cause desense when I use them for TX.

Steve,

*If* the problem is 3rd harmonics from the 2 m transmitter, then what you
did should have helped. Adding a 50-ohm terminator might improve the
attenuation of the 3rd harmonic.

A more common problem is that the 70 cm receiver can't handle the 2 m
transmitted signal because the receiver doesn't attenuate the 2 m signal
sufficiently. (The AGC on the radio hears the 2 m signal, attenuates the
whole 70 cm band, and you don't hear the satellite.) By using the Arrow
diplexer as a 2 m band reject filter, you may solve your problem.

For a better explanation see, Tony AA2TX's article here:
https://www.amsat.org/a-simple-desense-filter-for-mode-j-satellites/

So try your experiment again, but connect the antenna end of the diplexer to
the 70 cm antenna and the 70 cm radio end of the diplexer to your receiver.

I don't have either the app or the plug-in for Firefox, and often get
notified on the main Amazon site that the same product is available on
Smile. I think you need to be logged in for that to occur.

Hi!

I will make a quick trip to New Mexico to activate some grids on Friday,
29 March 2019. My plans are to work the midday AO-91 passes from the
DM52/DM62 grid boundary west of Deming. Later in the afternoon, I plan to
work a couple of SO-50 passes from the DM61/DM62 grid boundary south of
Deming. Both of these locations are in New Mexico's Luna County. In
between the AO-91 and SO-50 passes, I will work other passes from one of
these grid boundaries. I may skip the morning AO-92 passes, depending on
where I am when those passes come up. I will drive over 300 miles/500km to
get to the Deming area Friday morning. I won't stay in that area into the
evening, as I need to get to Tucson in the evening, before a hamfest there
on Saturday (30 March) morning.

During the day, I will use my @?????? Twitter account to post updates. For
those who don't use Twitter, my tweets are readable in a web browser at:

http://twitter.com/WD9EWK

APRS coverage should be pretty good in that area. I use WD9EWK-9 as my
call sign for APRS when on the road, and my track should be visible at:

http://aprs.fi/WD9EWK-9

All contacts made from this New Mexico trip will be uploaded to Logbook of
the World. If you would like a QSL card for a contact with WD9EWK in New
Mexico, please e-mail me directly with the QSO details. There's no need to
first send me your QSL card or an SASE to get my card.

73!
