ALARA Grants

ALARA is the Australian Ladies Amateur Radio Group.

The Association's mission is to encourage womenâ€Ös interest and active participation in amateur radio.

We have created a grant scheme to encourage more women and girls to get their amateur radio licence qualifications. This scheme covers approximately half the cost of getting a licence and callsign. It is also available to enable current Foundation Licence holders to upgrade their qualifications to Standard or Advanced.

Full details are available on the ALARA website https://alara.org.au/

QSL NEWS

Report - from Herman VK7HW   Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

Herman advises that a pack of QSL Cards arrived on Friday 20th September. 345 cards were received for 26 different Call signs. Several Cards have been delivered and emailed in the last weeks and the list updated.

As usual, Herman will deliver cards to Clubs and or QTH's on an opportunity basis. Feedback from Clubs as to which cards they can receive on behalf of members would be appreciated. Also, unless requested otherwise by those who have mail out arrangements, If there are only 1 or 2 cards for a station,  Herman intends to hold those cards until there are enough to make a mail out more cost effective.

If you have any questions about QSL Cards being held, Herman can be contacted by email vk7bureau @ wia.org.au

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Last Wednesday we held our October general meeting. As predicted, cooler temperatures were still lingering, so Skywarmer was lit but we were able to keep it at a low heat. What an attendance. It really is great to see members interested in knowing what we are doing and where we are headed or could it be that some had simply forgotten that no Tech session was to be held that week? Either way, we had a great roll up and all seemed to enjoy the night, so it didnâ€Öt really matter what brought the members out in such numbers.

The meeting commenced at 19:32 hours and as has well and truly become the norm these days, the agenda was rapidly worked through. All discussion was succinct and directly on subject, which is great as it doesnâ€Öt get us bogged down unnecessarily. As a result, the meeting was closed at 20:00 hours (8.00pm).

Supper was then produced, giving members great opportunity to sit around and discuss all manner of things and enjoy the very sumptuous fare. Mind you, the early appearance of supper meant that for some who had eaten dinner before attending, there was less inclination to over-indulge but for those of us who hadnâ€Öt managed to get a normal evening meal prior to the meeting, the early supper meant that we could make amends, so we tucked in and thoroughly enjoyed all the good fare.

It was great to see members lingering on, enjoying endless coffee and tea and general chit chat. Naturally, our resident joke teller was in great form on the night and kept many of us chuckling over his stories.

The Minutes will be written up in coming days once my current task of minding grandchildren on school holidays has been completed.

Now though, since there was no technical session last Wednesday evening, we can now move on to our upcoming events.

Coming events

Technical sessions – The next session will be on Wednesday 16 October and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm running through to 10.30 pm at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature, however defined, is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.

JOTA/JOTI 2019 – NTARC will be hosting the event at the NTARC Club Rooms, formerly known as the Rocherlea Scout Hall. Activities will start on Saturday 19 October at noon to 8.00 pm and on Sunday 20 October from 10.0am to 3.00 pm. As usual it will be split over the two halls with JOTI being set up in the big hall by the Rovers.

This year JOTA/JOTI is celebrating 62 years of connecting scouts and guides by radio and 23 years of Internet connection.

As in past years we will be offering a BBQ, with the usual sausages and onion in bread available at a donation of $2.00 and drinks, either hot or cold for a similar $2.00 donation.

Peter has a number of groups booked in over the two days so more bodies to assist would be appreciated. If you are able to assist on either or both days, could you please contact NTARCâ€Ös JOTA Coordinator Peter VK7KPC by email dodd.pc@bigpond.com or by mobile 0408 805 086 or catch up with him at coffee mornings.

Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards but currently we have no cards awaiting collection.

As I remind all every week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I donâ€Öt know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.

Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email them to the following address

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast, including frantically arranging other connections when our NBN fails, which is quite often. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated and do much to lower my blood pressure.

As always, I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

Save the Date - REAST October Tour

Ever wondered what goes on to bring you that carton of flavoured milk? Well this behind the scenes tour of the Lion Dairy & Drinks company in Lenah Valley will show you the whole process. We are lucky to have the chief engineer - Dale Barnes VK7DG to show us through.

The levels of automation and process control used within this factory are a wonder to behold!

Given that this is a food production facility, all visitors will need to comply with the hygiene and Good Manufacturing Practise requirements as we all do as employees. This includes all visitors needing to wear long pants fully covering the legs. Visitors will be supplied boots, dust coats, protective safety glasses, hair nets and beard masks, washing and sanitising of hands before entering the production area.

The tour will take place on Wednesday 16th October at 7:30pm. That is this coming Wednesday! Meet at the front office car park - 215 Lenah Valley Rd.

A huge thank you to Dale for organising this tour.

73, Justin, VK7TW

DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up

We started the night with an outline of the new video mixer - a Panasonic WJ-MX20 that has been donated to the studio by Anders Marchant, thank you Anders.

We then got Hayden VK7HH of Ham Radio DX YouTube channel fame who discussed the article he has on Hack-A-Day website about the MFJ RigPi. Some great exposure of amateur radio on the Hack-A-Day site - great work Hayden.

Some promo of the Sister Akousmatica - Cam Arts Forum at the Hunter St Arts School last Friday. Pip and Julia have also put out the International Open Call for Radio Art that will be featured during their community radio station installation at the Moonah Arts Centre during the end of November and December.

http://www.sistersakousmatica.org/

Justin VK7TW then took the audience through the tour of the ABC that occurred a few weeks ago. Justin then took the audience through the VK5BR Interference Cancelling circuit that he is currently building to try and reduce the interference level he is experiencing. Watch this space.

The 122GHz Transceiver project this last week has started a Groups.io group for this project and there is some great stuff happening on this group.

https://groups.io/g/The122GProject

Hayden outlined the segment he did with Peter Parker VK3YE where they talked about their entry into amateur radio and we featured Peter's recent videos on recycling items that were rescued from the hard rubbish collection in Melbourne.

http://vk3ye.com/

Another video we featured was called Demystifying Amateur Repeaters which Hayden did with Josh on Ham Radio Crash Course.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KcPOIV56VUw

We finished with a quick look at the latest DIYODE magazine.

We go into recess for a fortnight so see you at the next DATV Experimenter's Night on Wednesday 23rd October 2019.

See you then

73, Justin, VK7TW

TECHNICAL ARTICLES

AMSA seeking feedback on ceasing HF monitoring

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is seeking feedback on the proposal to cease HF radiotelephone monitoring of distress and safety communications in Australia on 1 January 2022.

The state and Northern Territory marine agencies or volunteer marine rescue organisations monitor the HF radiotelephone distress and safety calling frequencies.

The proposal to cease monitoring has come from the Maritime Agencies Forum (MAF), a national body that enables marine safety agencies to identify, agree and monitor the ongoing work required to implement the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV), which coordinates technical maritime safety advice and operational maritime policy nationally.

However, the use of HF radiotelephone as the first and only means of distress and safety calling has steadily declined.

In the four-year period to March 2018, there were only two distress and six urgency communications initiated by vessels, where only HF radiotelephone was used.

The consultation applies to all vessel categories; however, vessels operating outside VHF coast station range and without a global maritime distress safety system (GMDSS) radio, such as Inmarsat, or HF digital selective calling radio are those mostly affected.

Pitcairn Island DXpedition - >From Thursday October 17th till November 2nd

On September 29th, the following was posted on the Pitcairn Island DXpedition VP6R Web page

We are pleased to announce our pilot station network for the Pitcairn Island DXpedition.

Our pilot station system is in place to relay your reports, concerns, and advise to us through our pilot stations. Initially, the information most important to us will be when we are being heard in your area. This is especially true if there are openings to more than one geographical area at the same time and one of those areas has strong signals that obscure stations calling from the other areas. We need to attend to those weaker signals and your reports will help us do that.

With time your band and mode needs will be relayed to us through our system. Constructive criticism is welcome as well. Our system is somewhat "Eurocentric," with north, south, east, and western Europe each having a representative in our system. We do this because needs for a VP6 contact are greater in Europe and European signals may be "under" stronger signals from other geographical areas.

Our chief and North American pilot is Jerry, WB9Z. He will be supported by JJ3PRT, OG2M, R7LV, G3XTT, EA3AKP, IK0FVC, NP4G, ZS1C, and ZL3IO.

Please go to our Pilots and Off-Island Team Members page for more details. We want you in our log and we want you to have fun working us.

On October 3rd, the following was also posted: We have added Lance, W7GJ, to our off island team. He will be our EME pilot, helping to maximize our effectiveness on 6 meter EME.

We have also formalized our FT8 protocol. You can find the details on the "How to Work VP6R" page. Read and study them carefully. We also suggest you use the link on this page to read "The FT8 DXpedition User Guide" by Joe Taylor, K1JT.
