Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau
Herman has advised that the recently arrived QSL cards have been sorted and the list in the email version of the broadcast updated.
As usual, Herman will deliver cards to Clubs and or QTH's on an opportunity basis. Also, unless requested otherwise by those who have mail out arrangements, If there are only 1 or 2 cards for a station, Herman intends to hold those cards until there are enough to make a mail out more cost effective.
When Herman took on the role of Inwards QSL Manager he was given a list of Callsigns of VK7 Amateurs who will only accept cards sent directly to them.
The callsigns are - VK7's GK, OK, KO, CH, LO, NGW and OC. Any updates would be appreciated and if there are any other Amateurs in the same position please advise me so I can update my records.

RD contest 2019
Have you put in your log?
Last weekend was the RD Contest for 2019 and there was a huge VK7 contingent on the bands from around VK7.
Thanks to Warren VK7WN who took a look at the logs submitted on Friday night and VK7 was ahead with 37 logs, followed by VK2 with 35 logs with VK3 & 6 with 32 logs each.
If you havent put your log in then please do it soon, do not put it off. Logs of less than 100 can be a paper log and over 100 will need to be electronic logs and details can be found on the WIA Contests website.
VK7 have won it the last two years thanks to a concerted effort to get amateurs participating and it is great to see VK7FLAR, VK7FPCL and VK7FREU in the submitted logs. VK7 again has the most F-calls in the logs.
Please please please put in your log – dont delay.
Last day for log submission is Sunday 1 October 2019.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
Here we are, back again. We hope everyone had fun last weekend, being involved in the RD Contest and the International Lighthouse event, As for your local northern news team, we had a day off to enjoy other activities, as it is the one Sunday in the year we can down tools. I must admit it was nice not having the pressure of writing the northern news segment and then having to run the email gauntlet of getting it down south on time on the Friday night. Now though, we are back to normal, so lets get on with the latest northern news.
As the broadcast goes to air many NTARC members who take part in our Equine events will be enjoying a well-earned rest after having been involved in providing safety communications at an endurance ride at Scottsdale yesterday. A number have been on site since last Thursday. Hopefully we may be able to bring you a report on that event next week.
As promised in the news of 11 August, here is a quick rundown on the working bee held at the NTARC clubrooms on Saturday 10 August.
What a brilliant roll up of members, ready to tackle a number of jobs that needed to be done or completed. Our electrician was busy installing a power point for the fan in Skywarmer. Once that had been completed he was then kept busy fixing lights in the garage and in the mens toilet. Speaking of which, the mens toilet ceiling has now been repaired, we wont mention any name but at a working bee a year or so back, one willing worker member managed to put a knee through the ceiling. While that possibly improved ventilation in that admittedly small room, it did little to stop the dust and other accumulated ceiling by-products from joining the members and guests utilising the conveniences on offer within said small room. The hole has now been repaired. Another hole, in the ceiling of the small meeting room and one we inherited when we took over the club room some years ago, was also finally patched, I am told it is only temporary but who cares. That draught hole is now secured.
The chainsaw was busy cutting up wood which was then nicely stacked away and the area generally cleaned up. As a result, we can now access the BBQs much easier. Toilets were cleaned in both halls, as was the storeroom. Everything within the latter was packed away in nice neat piles, meaning it will now be easier to locate things, including toilet rolls, undeniably very important items. The entrance foyer has had its ceiling replaced. It has also been lined with pine strips and looks extremely welcoming now.
All the workers enjoyed the BBQ lunch and numerous cups of coffee and tea along with many biscuits to keep the sugar level up. We say a huge thank you to those members for giving up their Saturday to spend some 8 hours at the club room to get so many jobs done. I wont name you as we had so many but you know who you are and we appreciate it. As many commented on the following Monday at coffee, the day was a great success.
We now hand over to NTARC President Idris VK7ZIR for his report on the clubs latest technical session, held at the clubrooms at Rocherlea this past Wednesday evening.
Round up of Wednesday 21 August technical session – “Again it was standing room only as we resumed operations after a 2 week recess caused by the monthly meeting. Ross VK7ALH came along with 2 radios. A TenTec Corsair 2 and a TenTec Argonaut 5. The Corsair had suffered at the hands of previous owners and needed much TLC from Ross to get it working again. Ross explained the process, which took some detective work and much loss of hair, resulting in success and a working radio. Some cosmetic work is left to do. The Argonaut was a fine example of its type, much more compact than the Corsair, with fan assisted cooling, as opposed to the Corsair which had the real estate for a large heatsink for the final transistors. Thanks Ross for an interesting presentation.
Simon VK7FSRM was beavering away at some Advanced level practice exams, getting ready for the next opportunity for an upgrade.
Ebenezer VK7AT had refurbished a Morse electronic keyer which was originally an Electronics Australia kit from the seventies. The paddle mechanism came from New Zealand. After some tidying up internally and pots cleaned, the internal amplifier delivered clean Morse tones. The unit also had an input for an external key, and we were treated to the sight of a magnificent hi-mound key mounted on a granite base, Ebenezers favourite instrument. The Morse code he generated could well have been one of his jokes, but it was too fast for anyone to read.
Peter VK2MPK arrived advising that he was given the day off as the weather at the wind farm site was too bad for transporting more components.
David VK7YY brought in some antenna traps he wanted to weather proof and was soon given advice on various methods from the knowledgeable folk there.
Trevor VK7TB is continuing his dual magnetic loop project. He had compiled VNA plots over the winter months to observe the effects of the weather on the loop elements. He has determined that the loops are too close to the ground, so it will be raised several metres. This involves constructing an extension for the rotator, so more of the details will be the subject of another report. Watch this space!
Finally, a donation from one of our members of a considerable number of radio books caused quite a commotion around the groaning table as books were being inspected. Some were appropriated for the Club library, while others were carried off with a suitable donation to the Club coffers.
Thats all for now, until next week,
73, Idris VK7ZIR”
Thank you Idris, great to see another good roll up. Please note there will be no technical session on Wednesday 28th as this is our non-meeting social dinner. Further information on that event is noted in the coming events segment.
An item of interest, courtesy of member Michael VK7MRS. Michael, who is our Assistant Repeater Officer South. Michael is also the Huon District JOTA coordinator and he is pleased to advise us of the following exciting news.
“Its official, VK7HSD now has a shack!
Huon Scout District club station, VK7HSD along with the Q store, was officially opened on the 17th of August at the Huonville Scout & Guide Hall.
We had a big rollup of some 50 Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venture youth, plus Leaders as well as the State Commissioner of Scouts Tasmania along with the Huon Valley Mayor attending the ceremony.
The Q store was rightly named “THE KAAPORT” in recognition of Mark Norris
25 years of scouting in the Huon Valley. “CAR” as it is pronounced, is his scouting name.
The motto "ENSPIRING OTHERS TO ACHIEVE A LIFE TIME HOBBY" has been adopted by VK7HSD to encourage young people to participate and hopefully gain there Amateur radio license.
Huonville scout troop already boasts 1 youth member and 2 leaders currently holding their Foundation licenses.
Currently radios include an Icom 706Mk2G with an AH4 tuner for HF operations as well as 2m and 70cm radios. The tower along with radio equipment have been kindly donated by many operators from around Australia.
VK7HSDs echo link node number 913668 and DMR id 5057118 will be active for scouting activities as well as for JOTA.
We look forward to making contact from the southernmost Scouting District of Australia.
73 from Michael, VK7MRS Huon District JOTA coordinator.
Thank you Michael for that exciting news. Your fellow NTARC members and Committee and likewise other amateurs around the State wish you and the Huon Scouts all the best for the future. Im sure we will hear plenty of activity from your club station over the 2019 JOTA weekend.
Coming events
Social non meeting dinner – last reminder that this event takes place on Wednesday 28 August. In case you have forgotten the venue is The Commercial Hotel, corner Cimitiere and George Street Launceston. Meet time 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm dinner. The menu is a la carte. If you are planning to attend and havent already done so, could you please email me at either of the following
addresses ypmaxwell @ bigpond.com or ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
or let me know at coffee session on Monday, as I need to confirm the numbers later that day. For those attending the table has been booked under NTARCs name and we will be in the big dining room. A copy of the menu can be found at the club room. The menu is extensive and very good value. Meals are on the medium to large size so I can assure no one will go home hungry. For those that enjoy dessert they also have a very good selection.
Technical sessions – The next session will be on Wednesday 4 September and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature, however defined, is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.
Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards but currently we have no cards awaiting collection.
Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I dont know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast, including frantically arranging other connections when our NBN fails. Your continued co-operation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated and do much to lower my blood pressure.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

REAST September Visit
Behind the Scenes - ABC TV & Radio
A huge thank you to Damien VK7SD and Alan VK7KAD who have agreed to give us a Behind the Scenes tour into the ABC TV and Radio Studios in Hobart.
This is be a fascinating tour by the some of the Technical Staff who have been doing a huge program of work to improve the studios.
This will be happening on the 25th September 2019. Please note the first Wednesday night of September will be a DATV Experimenters night.
More details closer to the event.
--------------------------
DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Even though it was literally pouring with rain and cold there was a big group of hardy experimenter's who came along for our focus on old test equipment night.
We started on air with Justin VK7TW and Hayden VK7HH in the DATV studio with a wrap up of the Remembrance Day Contest. Hayden reported that there was a fantastic number of logs - 33 at the time of broadcast and the most of all the states with VK6 close behind. Hayden then took us through his station and the frequencies he operated, thanks Hayden.
We then went into the clubrooms where Kim Briggs VK7KB had brought along a fantastic array of older test equipment. He started with a HP frequency counter using Nixie tubes that had the converter module up to 500MHz. Justin had a OB camera that he took around to each piece of equipment and Kim described the equipment, function and use. We then went to a 1980's HP LED frequency counter up to 1.3GHz and many other counter functions. Then a Tektronix CM500 containing a CRO, PSU, Function Generator, DVM all in the same portable case.
We then went to an older 1950s HP frequency generator - 606 HF version to 65MHz in a. Larger landscape case. HP DVM 410C with thermocouple temperature probe. The a Motorola inline Power Meter for service monitors - VHF/UHF slugs slides. Then a Keithley microVolt DVM with LCD display and autoranging functionality. A 1970s HP Time Domain Reflectometer which is ex- Dave Thorne that has been on loan to Justin for a while...HIHI. There was then a smaller portable Tektronix time domain reflectometer with CRO screen and chart recorder.
The final piece of VK7KB test equipment was a microwave 0.8 to 2.3GHz signal generator of 1970's vintage. This was a Klystron tube with tuneable cavities with beautiful microwave engineering. The final piece of test equipment was bought in by John VK7FJPA and was a 1980s two channel CRO and Kim gave a tutorial to John on how to use it. Thanks Kim and John.
We get back underway next Wednesday night with a DATV Experimenter's night from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms.
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune to 445.5MHz and do a scan for a DVB-T signal, and, you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.
