EME News
10 GHz EME Beacon
Thanks to Rex VK7MO for passing on this wonderful story about the 10GHz EME Beacon via Moon-Net.
Per Dudek PE1ITR is the person who provides a fantastic facility for the microwave EME community – a 10GHz WSJT Beacon from Germany. It has been off the air for a while and Per let the list know the following…
The 10GHz beacon has been repaired and installed. The repair of the PA was done by Charlie G3WDG.
After installing, Per tried to switch on the beacon, but the water cooling system did not work. Taking the cover off the box he noticed a bird with 5 very young, still naked chicks had established their home inside the beacon box. Per initially said Im afraid the beacon will have to wait until they have left their home!
Per checked a day later and the Mum and chicks had moved on so, the beacon is now back operating.

News from the North West
North West Tasmanian Radio and Television Group (NWTR&TVG)
The NWTR&TVG held a winter luncheon at the Light House hotel on Saturday 20th July, we had quite a roll up, with Club Members and family members attending.
A scrumptious lunch & dessert was enjoyed by those attending, and much lively banter and some radio discussion was had, over the lazy long lunch.
Im assured no one went home hungry and some photos of the event will be posted on the VK7 Amateur Radio Face Book page.
Regards
(Eric, VK7EV, News Officer)

Wow, here we already at the last Sunday of the month and there are only 3 days left in July. That must mean winter is nearing its end, thank goodness.
Not a great deal has happened in the past week so we have just a couple of new items then basically a rehash of past news. What I can say that coffee morning last Friday saw a good roll up. Ros, our early morning person, had the fire going, urn on, cakes and biscuits out and party pies in the oven, long before anybody else turned up. Thank you to Ros for getting everything set up for all to enjoy and for doing it so often, on both Mondays and Fridays. Ebenezer VK7AT was again in great form, telling many jokes and stories. He does keep us well amused when in top form.
We now hand over to NTARC President Idris VK7ZIR for his report on the clubs latest technical session, held at the clubrooms at Rocherlea this past Wednesday evening.
Round up of Wednesday 24 July technical – “It was all go on Wednesday evening, as soon as the urns were activated and Skywarmer fired up. First up was Peter VK7KPC with a very interesting broadcast band and shortwave receiver made by STC around 1949. This model 225 was in good condition with a completely legible tuning window. I have seen many radios of this vintage where the celluloid had yellowed and cracked, thus obliterating the printed stations, but this one had all Australian AM stations of that era with the Tasmanian list including 7DY! It also had an international shortwave scale on one side with world cities and wavelengths. The radio was meant to be portable with room for two batteries and also an interesting socket for an external power source. A schematic on the back panel showed a five valve line-up with two IT4s, IR5, IS5 and a 3V4. Those with valve knowledge will probably recognise them. Thanks Peter.
Using our big screen projector, Peter VK7KPC showed photos of his recent trip to Darwin and visit to a military museum with exhibits ranging from radios to armoured vehicles.
Peter then showed plots of clubroom antennas he taken couple of weeks ago with his new RigExpert analyser. The provided software is interactive and apart from the SWR it could also show the Impedance components at the selected frequency points. Also was able to present the data in the ubiquitous Smith Chart display.
We then viewed the latest TX Factor, episode 23. This included a superficial review of the new Icom IC-9700 and as one disappointed member commented, there was nothing mentioned of its digital mode capabilities. Tasmanian amateurs have had front line involvement in the investigation of the issues surrounding the radios frequency stability involving those modes.
Peter VK2MPK also showed photos of the snow covered landscape on his journey hauling wind turbine parts to Cattle Hill. He also showed a video of snow falling on the road ahead on one of the few days that the road wasnt closed due to flooding.
Much discussion ensued around what we had viewed making it a most enjoyable movie evening. The only thing missing was the popcorn, but well have to see about that.
Until next week.
73, Idris VK7ZIR”
Thank you Idris, great to see a full house again. Popcorn sounds a good idea will have to add to the shopping list.
Something a bit different – a couple of NTARC members are also members of the Longford Mens shed. They are very busy making some beautiful timber items and one of those currently being shown around to members is a set of 4 coasters in a timber holder. These coasters are made of Tasmanian timbers eg Sassafras, Celery top pine and Blackwood. They have butted together slices of the timbers and rounded the corners and then finished off with a clear coat of sealant. These have attracted much interest, so much so that NTARC has decided to get onboard the venture. We are purchasing a seal of the club logo and this will be burnt into one side of the coaster. The other side will have a small logo of the Longford Mens shed. You can also order without the NTARC logo, in fact many of us have ordered a set with the club logo and a set without. For those that are already thinking of Christmas presents, I think the ones without the NTARC logo would make a nice gift for anybody not involved with the club. Of course, if buying for a NTARC member, you will certainly want the club logo.
If you are interested in having your name added to the list then pop into the club room on coffee morning and speak with Norm VK7KTN. I can assure you they are reasonably priced.
The Mens Shed crew are also looking at making a portable fold up outdoor table and a sample model has been produced. As these tables will be used outdoors, they are looking at using marine ply. The table will have a cut out for your bottle of red or white and 4 cut outs for your glasses. The unit is very compact and easily stored in small places. I have put my name down as I thought wow, these will be great on the boat(s) and caravan. Again, you can have it with or without the NTARC logo burnt on.
Coming events
Technical sessions – The next session will be on Wednesday 31 July and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.
August general meeting – Wednesday 14 August. Meeting to commence at 19:30 hours. Show and Tell to follow or general chat session. Meeting will be held in the small meeting room utilizing the warmth of Skywarmer. Supper to follow for a gold coin or small note donation.
Equine event - NTARC has been invited to provide Safety Comms at the Jolly Lette Memorial ride to be held on Saturday 24 August. This event is a one day ride and will take place at Santarena Park, Scottsdale a venue well known to the NTARC comms crew.
Our Safety Communications Coordinator Norm VK7KTN tells us that the course has been set and there will be two checkpoints at a couple of our favourite spots, Rodeo Road and Rexs Race. Electronic timing will be used at this event which consists of an 80Km, 40Km and 20 Km rides. Thankfully not a crack of dawn start, the 80Km ride will commence at the respectful time of 07:00 hours. This will be followed by the 40Km event starting at 07:30 hours and the 20Km ride will commence at 08:15 hours. If you can assist at this event Norm would appreciate hearing from you by email at
safetycomms.ntarc @ gmail.com
or at coffee mornings. Scottsdale is a pleasant drive from Launceston so why not pack a picnic lunch, chair, warm clothing and wet weather gear just in case and think about joining us.
Social non meeting dinner – Wednesday 28 August. Venue The Commercial Hotel, corner Cimitiere and George Street Launceston. Meet time 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm dinner. A la carte menu. If you are planning to attend could you please email me at either of the following addresses ypmaxwell@bigpond.com or ntarc.emails@gmail.com or let me know at coffee sessions. So far I have 14 acceptances, the table has been booked under NTARCs name with 25 places but that can be extended. A copy of their menu can be found at the club room. The menu is extensive and very good value. Meals are on the medium to large size so I can assure no one will go home hungry. For those that enjoy dessert they also have a very good selection.
Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards but currently we have no cards awaiting collection.
Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I dont know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast, including frantically arranging other connections when our NBN fails. Your continued co-operation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated and do much to lower my blood pressure.
As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
WICEN South moves virtual home.
The WICEN web site has been moved, including the repeater map. Unfortunately, the move has messed up the generic Australia wide standard WICEN formatted address, which redirected to the then true address. Moving the redirect is proving to be problematical so its currently not working.
In the past, the WICEN Tasmania (South) site could be accessed via http://wicentas.com or via https://tas.wicen.org.au/ so if any of your bookmarks or links are pointed to either of these they either wont work or wont work for much longer.
The new address is https://wicentas.org/ The differences are subtle, especially via spoken media. Maybe best to refer to the email edition of this broadcast
If all you want is the repeater map, you can go straight there at the website address on the email edition of this broadcast https://wicentas.org/SOPs/Rpt_Map.htm

REAST August Presentation
Oculus Rift Virtual Reality technology
We are lucky to have Ian MacIntosh back for a fantastic presentation and demo of Oculus Rift Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Ian has been experimenting with this technology for many years and the presentation will include Oculus Rift VR Archaeology since 2012 as Ian will be able to demonstrate each of the models over the last few years.
The history of VR will be included from the 1960s and the players in this space. Ian will then move to the challenges like - Tracking. IMUs, IR Constellations and webcams, Room Scale tracking and motion capture. There are also technology challenges with real time processing, communication channels, bandwidth and latency.
Ian will show the technology he has built up over his time experimenting with VR technology. The prototyping he has been doing and Photogrammetry. Don't know what this is - why not come along and learn! Ian will then go into the tools he uses with an application called Meshroom.
During the presentation and demonstration there will be many forays into the real-world applications that this technology is already being used for. A huge thank you to Ian for giving us this presentation on one of his many passions.
This looks to be a fantastic night and we hope to see you up on the Queen's Domain in the REAST clubrooms from 7:30pm on 7 August 2019.

---------------------------
DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Another huge night of amateur radio experimentation on the Queen's Domain!
We started the night with Rex VK7MO talking about the late Ray Norton VK3ATN who was the first Australian amateur to do earth-moon-earth or moon bounce using 2m back in the early 1960s. Ray used a Rhombic antenna in a paddock with about 25dBi gain as well as some significant ground gain as the moon rose in the right direction about once a month.
Justin VK7TW then took the DATV audience through the insides of a Hauwei P20 smart phone that he had taken apart. This phone was not working and Justin managed to find out that the previous owner had tried to get the Brocken off 3.5mm headphone jack out of the socket and in trying this had wrecked the socket and the screen. Justin was able to reclaim some cameras loudspeaker, battery and coaxial cable that is a about one millimetre in diameter with connectors!
We then got into our Grid Dip Oscillator night with Alan VK7KAJ shown his Leader LDM-815 battery operated transistorised Dip Meter. This was a great unit with colour coded coils and meter. Justin has brought along a variable capacitor with random coil attached to see if we could work out the resonant frequency. Larry VK7WLH made a guess at around 10MHz and he was pretty close as the dip meter showed 9.6MHz!
Warren VK7WN then showed his Leader LDM-810 Grid Dip Meter. This was a very nice unit that had been hardly used that Warren found at the Margate Tip Shop for $15! This is a valve unit and so a true grid dip meter which we plugged in and dipped the resonant circuit to confirm 9.6MHz. Thanks Warren.
Justin then showed off his father's Eico Model 710 Grid Dip meter that was put together as a kit from America that is valve based and runs off the mains. The other dip meter was a battery operated Trio DM-801 which has the neat feature of a end draw that holds all the coils, earpiece and probe.
We finished off the night with some very interesting videos of restored moon walk footage from NASA of Apollo 11.
We get back underway this Wednesday night from 7:30pm with our DATV Experimenter's night.
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune to 445.5MHz and do a scan for a DVB-T signal, and, you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.

See you there.
