WIA Contest News
VHF/UHF Winter Field Day 2019

There is only two weekends until the Winter 2019 - VHF/UHF Field Day. That means portable and home operation on bands above 30MHz. The founding principle of the Field Days is to spend time outdoors and have fun, so the Single-band and Four-bands Subsections meets that philosophy and provides a taste of microwave contesting for newbies.

There are sections covering portable operation single or multiple operator (8 or 24 hour operation), home operation (8 or 24 hour operation) or rover station (8 or 24 hour operation).

There are a number of sub-sections that you can operate in as well. The two hour rework period remains.

It runs from 0100 UTC Saturday 22 June 2019 to 0059 UTC Sunday 23 June - In VK6 the contest runs from 0400 UTC Saturday 22 June 2019 to 0359 UTC Sunday 23 June 2019.

This year it is distance based scoring only.

A valid contact involves the exchange of an RS/RST report, a serial number and your six character maidenhead locator.

Why not get someone returning or new to the hobby involved in the your weekend activities.

Full details are available at the VHF UHF Field Day webpage on the WIA website.

News from the North West
North West Tasmania Radio & TeleVision Group (NWTR&TVG)

Saturday the 1st June, the North West Tasmania Radio & TV Group held its Bi Monthly meeting, At a special meeting held prior to the main meeting.

The Club amended its rules to allow $5 membership for Amateurs under 18, to encourage our F Calls to join. At the main meeting, we were delighted that ex Broadcast Engineer Terry VK7JAI brought along some more home brew projects he had made, they were a 2M converter, 2 x 6M Converters and a 10M Converter, built in the 60s utilising valves. These fed their IF into an old receiver, Terry had modified some of the circuits and built the units including the cases.

As always a sumptuous afternoon tea, and banter between members, an enjoyable afternoon, Photos can be seen on the VK7Amatuer Radio Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1472093859714691/

The Club also wish to advise the 6 Metre VK7RTV, currently located at Dazzler range, is off air till further notice.

President Shirley was probably hoping no one remembered that it was her Birthday on the meeting day, but unfortunately for Shirley, the remaining members remembered, and a well-meaning bunch of tone deaf amateurs sang a memorable happy birthday to Shirley.

Regards

(Eric VK7EV, News Officer)

Wow, the weather has changed again and whilst sitting on board writing the news segment, it is 22.9 outside. Three days ago it was teeming with rain and just 14 degrees. Today though, the sun is streaming down and many of our neighbours have gone out on their boats for the long weekend. Im very envious. As this is Friday though, I have fingers to the keyboard preparing the news but when that is done, I will need start sorting out my goods and shackles plus all the goodies purchased during my visit, ready for departure on Sunday for the night ferry home.

As this news goes to air a number of NTARC members are providing Safety Comms at the Jill Sheehan Memorial ride being held today at Sassafras. Lets hope the weather is kind to them and the participants.

We lead off as usual by passing over to NTARC President Idris VK7ZIR for his report on the clubs latest technical session, held at the clubrooms at Rocherlea this past Wednesday evening.

Technical session roundup for Wednesday 5 June 2019 – “A very cold night brought hardy stalwarts to the Tech Session this evening. Our wood heater was stoked up in short order as well as the urn!

Our regular visitor Peter VK2MPK showed us photos of the first snow fall he encountered while transporting parts to the Cattle Hill wind farm from Bell Bay. We wait with interest to see how they will make it through when winter really sets in. One interesting subject that was unfortunately only just touched on, due to time constraints, was the penetration of sophisticated computer control over many aspects of heavy truck operational systems like brakes, gearbox, engine management and overrides. To the point of overriding the driver when they are attempting to take emergency evasive measures! Sounds a bit like a 737 Maxi. Who really is in control!!

Idris VK7ZIR brought in a Wagner 829M HF marine transceiver complete with outboard antenna coupler. Fitted with 8 crystal locked marine channels. Output is about 30W using a Philips valve final. Kevin VK7HKN showed interest as he has one also. This particular example had never been to sea, having spent its time as a base unit, so has none of the ravages of a marine environment.

Peter VK7KPC had set up a portable vertical antenna on a tripod, connected to a home brew antenna coupler. Using his antenna analyser and software displaying SWR plots and Smith charts on a laptop, he demonstrated the couplers ability to match correct impedance to the transceiver despite what the antenna might look like. A very interesting demonstration thanks Peter.

No doubt spurred on by the chilly weather, Peter and Idris were also having a discussion on increasing the efficiency of the Club wood heater, by incorporating a computer fan to boost air circulation. Not really amateur radio, but anything to augment the warm air flow is fair game this weather! The heater actually does a very good job, considering its age.

André VK7ZAB brought in a nearly finished 12 Volt distribution box to be used in the NTARC communications trailer at locations like Sassafras, which has no mains power, this weekend. It consisted of a ventilated metal enclosure with seven small dc to dc convertors to provide regulated outputs from a battery supply that varies from 15V down to 10V. The module came from his favourite site DX.com and included an up convertor for the 19 Volt computer monitor, 5 and 9 Volt down converters for 4G Ethernet router and TNC. Also included were three 12 Volt modules to individually feed mini PCs and the Wi-Fi access point. The box will replace the array of mains power packs and reduce the load on the inverter and time that the petrol generator has to run.

Thanks André for that show & tell, to wrap up this weeks report.

73 Idris VK7ZIR”

We again thank Idris for that update. By the way, Idris also tells me that last week marked the first anniversary of NTARC Technical sessions. Well done to all and Im sure they are here as a standing club function for the years ahead.
Coming events

June general meeting – Wednesday evening 12 June. The meeting will commence at 19:30 hours and we are planning a Show and Tell session to follow it, so why not bring something along for all to view, comment etc. As always supper will follow and will be available for a small gold coin donation.

Technical sessions – The next session will be on Wednesday 19 June, due to our June general meeting being held next Wednesday the 12th. . Technical session events on the 19th will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.

Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer. Tomorrow Monday 10 June is a public holiday but we will be open so why not pop in.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards but I dont think we have any cards awaiting collection.

Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I dont know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email the following address

	 ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

Residing as we do in a rural location and despite what the company or Government might claim, our NBN service is very poor. At 14 kms south of Perth, we are deemed beyond the supposedly magical maximum 11 kms distance from the nearest fixed wireless tower, so we have to rely on the NBN satellite, parked somewhere over New Guinea. This brings its own difficulties, particularly in poor weather. Getting the NTARC segment to the boys in Hobart in time can often be problematic, so the earlier cut-off gives everybody involved a little breathing space. Your continued co-operation will therefore be gratefully appreciated.

As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea - now in just a few days time.

73, Yvonne, VK7FYMX Secretary NTARC Inc.

June Presentation
Radio Control Technology Update

The presentation for June is this Wednesday night and will be given by our resident radio control experimenter Ron Cullen. It is a follow up from his previous presentation that was done back in June 2017.

Ron will be covering improvements that he has made to do with remote control aircraft, First Person View (FPV) including a head tracking system which complements the FPV experience.

He will also be presenting a new modern aircraft which is capable of reaching speeds of 100+km/h.

Ron also now builds his own 5.8GHz AV antennas with the aid of a handy jig he created making the job a lot easier.

All this and more from Ron this Wednesday night, the 12th of June 2019 from 7:30pm.

See you there.

REAST Antenna Build Day

Saturday June 29th from 10am - 3pm - book this one in your diary as this will be REAST Antenna building day! Whether you want to dabble with a dipole, fidget with a fractal or alter an end fed, come and do it up at the REAST Clubrooms, where you will have access to tools and testing equipment to make sure that when you hit the transmit button your signal gets heard, rather than go up in smoke (quite literally with bad SWR!).

While you are more than welcome to bring up your own antenna project to work on and test with the available analysers which are capable of anything between 100KHz to 600Mhz, Ben VK7BEN has also prepared some antenna kits that are easy to make and fantastic starter projects that you can then modify and experiment further with.

The Two kits available are:

An end-fed half wave antenna that can be used on 40-20-15m will cost $35

A VHF/UHF handheld Moxon antenna for working LEO Satellites will cost $25

Each kit takes around 1-2 hours to assemble and test, so why not bring up some lunch and put together an antenna that you can start using as soon as you are done.

If you are interested in pre-ordering a kit, and guaranteeing availability please contact Ben VK7BEN by email at vk7ben@wia.org.au.

If you are building kits please be aware that there will be only limited tools available at the clubrooms, and you are strongly encouraged to bring your own. Ben will advise kit builders of what tools they will need on the day a bit closer to the time.

DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up

A huge night last Wednesday night with a full program from the DATV Studio.

We started with some presentations. The first to Alan Jeffrey was a WIA Certificate of Appreciation and badge for 10 years as a Learning Facilitator for the WIA. The second was a WIA Technical Excellence certificate for digital weak signal Earth-Moon-Earth experimentation and record setting in the GHz bands and this was presented to Rex Moncur VK7MO.

We then went through some of the presentation that are planned for the rest of the year. Rex and Justin VK7TW then went through the rules for the VHF/UHF Winter Field Day which is happening on the 22-23 June 2019.

Rex and Justin then continued with an outline of the presentations that are coming up at the Gippstech Microwave technical conference on the 13-14 July 2019 in Churchill, Gippsland.

Justin then took the audience through a quick visual precis of the WIA Annual Conference weekend in Sydney and the activities that took place.

We then retired to the clubrooms for a coffee and Rod VK7TRF took us through a recent purchase from the South Hobart Resource Tip shop. Ex-UTAS it was a hand built Fourier transform device that appeared to take audio input and split it into the component frequencies via opamps, ADCs, latches and an Eprom. This equipment was very well made and had Mike Emerys name etched on the PCB! Thanks Rod.

Rex also bought in the Glen VK1XX Chirp Transmitter and we had a look inside the box. Rex also displayed the 1296 VK3 beacon signals plot which showed strong signals at 2am, 8am and 10 am over a 24hour period. Thanks Rex.

Kim VK7KB bought in some very nice silicon coated 500 strand instrument wire that very quickly disappeared..HI HI thanks Kim.

Our DATV Experimenter's Nights go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune to 445.5MHz and do a scan for a DVB-T signal and you can see the Queens Domain then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

We get back under way in a fortnight with a full DATV studio program see you there.
