SILENT KEY
Bill Gwynne VK7KBG
It is with great sadness that I tell you of the death of my Dad, Bill Gwynne VK7KBG. Dad had not been active on the bands for the best part of a decade. However he still managed to keep some interest in the hobby via listening to the Sunday Broadcasts here and of course recounting stories of good DX during that wonderful cycle of the mid to late 1980's.
Dad's health had deteriorated somewhat in the last few months and he was taken to hospital on Saturday morning, the 25th of May. He died peacefully there the following morning, Sunday 26th of May.
RIP

RAOTC Broadcast Reminder
The official broadcast from the Radio Amateurs Old Timers Club of Australia will go to air on Monday June 3; thatâ€Ös tomorrow if youâ€Öre listening on Sunday. If you miss this it can be caught up with on the RAOTC website from Monday onward.
This month it will be slightly longer than usual due to some club news and a short review of the WIA AGM that was held in Sydney last weekend.
There are 3 main features: the first describes an intriguing incident concerning the hazards of distributing town gas when the pressure drops and how an incident might have occurred due to the absence of residual or remanent magnetism. An unlikely relationship I agree but listen to find out why.
The second describes a ‘bad case of ignition noiseâ€Ö concerning the Pye FM 734 car phones and what turned out to be the cause.
The third deals with a possible solution to the problem of poor HF conditions or for amateurs who live in places where antennas may not be permitted such as retirement villages. The contributor describes his use of one or more of the currently available digital voice modes aided by a ‘hot spotâ€Ö as a possible solution.
In addition to the interstate airing it will be broadcast in Tasmania at 7:30pm local time on Monday June 3 over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network then again at approximately 8:30pm local by VK7AX on Digital ATV 445.50 MHz standard DVB-TÂ in the Ulverstone area. Note the new frequency of 445.50 MHz is to comply with the WIA Band Plan. Otherwise you can catch it on the "VK7AX Members Video Stream"Â direct link

Please join in the call backs after the broadcast if you are able.

Wow what a change in weather in this part of the world. Paradise it has not been this week, more like Parad “iceâ€. Whilst sitting on board writing the news segment, it is pouring down outside. Yesterday we were entertained by the RAAF carrying out training exercises from their base at Sale in their new Pilatus PC-21s but if they were at it again today it would all have been well above our 100% cloud cover. We neither saw nor heard anything.
Whatâ€Ös more, the change in the weather has forced us finally into long pants and has sent me off to the shops to buy some warm tracksuit clothing.
Again no new items of news have reached your reporter so it will again be a rehash of coming events. We will understand if you wander out to the kitchen and make coffee and toast, eggnog, spiced mulled wine or whatever aprés-ski warmer takes your fancy. Then again, for those that donâ€Öt listen to the news every week, you may find the rehash actually contains something that actually enlightens you on what is happening in your club.
So, we lead off as usual by passing over to NTARC President Idris VK7ZIR for his report on the clubâ€Ös latest technical session, held at the clubrooms at Rocherlea this past Wednesday evening.
Technical session roundup for Wednesday 29th May 2019 – “Here we go for another action packed Tech Session.
Trevor VK7TB has completed the Reference Frequency converter for his Ten Tec Orion transceiver. This will take 10MHz from his rubidium standard and convert to the master oscillator frequency for the Orion. A small PCB will sit on top of the radio TXO and interface the output from the converter. Trevor has designed all the circuit boards and has had them produced overseas. The main converter unit has a PCB designed by SV1AFN using an Analog Devices ADF4351.This has the frequency programmed with an Arduino Nano, coded by André VK7ZAB. All mounted on a mother board in a metal enclosure. A beautiful job Trevor.
Idris VK7ZIR brought in an antique valve tester made by the Precision Apparatus Company of Brooklyn, New York, USA. It is in a slightly dishevelled condition but with a front panel clean and general tidy up it will be quite presentable. It is built into a wooden case with dovetail construction but alas, the top cannot be found. A future project to build one maybe! The instrument is complete except for a neon tube labelled “short indicatorâ€. Ross VK7ALH commented that he might be able to provide one from his collection and Nick VK7BEE has agreed to undertake restoration work.
And speaking of Rossâ€Ös collection, he had brought us a show & tell in the form of a Traeger HF transceiver in good condition from the 1970s. All made in South Australia with plug-in modules and built-in antenna tuner. Just about all componentry made in Australia. Thanks Ross.
Peter VK7KPC has received the PCB for mounting his XCXO module and it looks very nice in its metal enclosure with SMA output connector and power input socket. This will be going back to Trevorâ€Ös lab for comparison with the Rubidium 10 MHz Standard. We should have the results to report next week.
James VK7JAM had his RigExpert module set up with its USB interface feeding into a laptop running graphical software to display the parameters of an end fed wire antenna under test. He intends to mount all the analyser components in a suitable enclosure.
A lot was happening and other discussion groups were taking place at the same time, so I will leave it there until next week.
73 Idris VK7ZIRâ€
Thanks Idris for that update.
Coming events
Technical sessions – next session, Wednesday 5 June at the usual time of 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.
Equine event – final reminder Jill Sheehan Memorial Ride Sunday 9th June being held at Sassafras, Smith & Others Road. This is the long weekend but NTARC will commence setting up on the Friday. If you would like to assist at this event our Safety Communications Coordinator Norm VK7KTN would appreciate hearing from you. Norm can be contacted by email safetycomms.ntarc@gmail.com As the location is a pleasant 1 hour drive from Launceston why not consider coming along and put your radio skills to good use assisting a community event. If this is your first event then you will be paired with an experienced operator so that you can quickly grasp the procedures involved and become comfortable with NTARCâ€Ös regular general approach to these events.
June general meeting – Wednesday evening 12 June. The meeting will commence at 19:30 hours and we are planning a Show and Tell session to follow it, so why not bring something along for all to view, comment etc. Of course supper will follow.
Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards but I donâ€Öt think we have any cards awaiting collection.
Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I donâ€Öt know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
However, while I am absent on holiday, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its insertion into the NTARC segment. There are very real difficulties in compiling the weekly news contribution when away from home QTH, not that there arenâ€Öt when at home. In the field though, they are much more demanding. During my absence therefore, the reality must be that if I do not receive contributions by 17:00, I will be obliged to simply insert a note that no report has been received on that particular item before the cut off. I trust that this will be understood.
As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea but still not for some days.
73, Yvonne, VK7FYMX Secretary NTARC Inc.

June Presentation
Radio Control Technology Update
The presentation for June will be given by our resident radio control experimenter Ron Cullen. It is a follow up from his previous presentation that was done back in June 2017.
Ron will be covering improvements that he has made to do with remote control aircraft, First Person View (FPV) including a head tracking system which complements the FPV experience.
He will also be presenting a new modern aircraft which is capable of reaching speeds of 100+km/h.
Ron also now builds his own 5.8GHz AV antennas with the aid of a handy jig he created making the job a lot easier.
All this and more from Ron on the second Wednesday night, the 12th of June 2019 from 7:30pm.
See you there.

REAST Antenna Build Day
Saturday June 29th from 10am - 3pm - book this one in your diary as this will be REAST Antenna building day! Whether you want to dabble with a dipole, fidget with a fractal or alter an end fed, come and do it up at the REAST Clubrooms, where you will have access to tools and testing equipment to make sure that when you hit the transmit button your signal gets heard, rather than go up in smoke (quite literally with bad SWR!).
While you are more than welcome to bring up your own antenna project to work on and test with the available analysers which are capable of anything between 100KHz to 600Mhz, Ben VK7BEN has also prepared some antenna kits that are easy to make and fantastic starter projects that you can then modify and experiment further with.
The Two kits available are:
An end-fed half wave antenna that can be used on 40-20-15m will cost $35
A VHF/UHF handheld Moxon antenna for working LEO Satellites will cost $25
Each kit takes around 1-2 hours to assemble and test, so why not bring up some lunch and put together an antenna that you can start using as soon as you are done.
If you are interested in pre-ordering a kit, and guaranteeing availability please contact Ben VK7BEN by email at vk7ben@wia.org.au.
If you are building kits please be aware that there will be only limited tools available at the clubrooms, and you are strongly encouraged to bring your own. Ben will advise kit builders of what tools they will need on the day a bit closer to the time.
(73, Ben, VK7BEN)

DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Despite the cold blast from the South, there were many intrepid experimenter's who came along the the clubrooms.
Larry VK7WLH bought along from interesting articles from QST about magnetic loop antennas and a HF antenna using a tree. Thanks Larry.
Ron Cullen was continuing to experiment with his azimuth / elevation camera mount and is looking to mount it in an R2D2 looking droid mount on this futuristic RC plane. Ron very proudly told us that he had the Bluetooth connectivity working between his first person display and the control panel. This means there is no no wires connecting the FPV device. On ya Ron.
Martin VK7MA borrowed a FT2311 and we are looking forward to hearing Martin on the 23cm QSO Party after the broadcast.
Alan VK7KAJ was showing off some videos of early CRT based calculators on a YouTube  channel called NumberPhile which specialises in problems and issues containing numbers and mathematics. There is certainly some fascinating stuff on that channel for the DATV nights. Thanks Alan.
Justin VK7TW and Alan, played in the DATV Studio to get the stream video encoding better along with the Audio level and this is ready for this week.
Jet VK7FJET was beavering away on his notebook getting together a bill of materials for the GPS Disciplined Oscillator he is building to provide a stable reference for some of his test equipment. On ya Jet.
Kim VK7KB and Justin discussed some of the arrangements that are being made for the 2020 WIA Annual Conference which is being held in Hobart on 8-10 May 2020. The theme is Antarctic Gateway and so the tours and visits during the weekend all revolve around Antarctica - very apt given the rather cold weather we have been experiencing.
Our DATV Experimenter's Nights go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune to 445.5MHz and do a scan for a DVB-T signal and you can see the Queens Domain then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.
https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/
We get back under way this Wednesday night with a full DATV studio program see you there Wednesday June 5th from 7:30pm and we will be taking callbacks on Repeater 2.
