Amateur Radio Promotion
Outstanding Social Media Contribution

In the latest edition of the ARRL QST magazine the CEO David Minster, NA2AA, leads with a great article entitled “Social Media — Friend and Foeö and David writes...

“Almost a year ago now, I reached out to 32 YouTube content creators who I wanted to personally recognize for their "giving back" through their videos. Some of them are famous in our community, like Tim Duffy, K3LR, at DX Engineering. Tim works tirelessly to bring three sessions weekly to his channel, featuring everything from ham radio manufacturers to innovators. Some of them are less known, like Steve Babcock, VE6WZ, who has produced some of the best videos I have seen on constructing everything from receiving antennas to complete remote radio configuration.

Like our radio signals that know no boundaries, social media is indeed a global endeavor. A couple of major standouts include Callum McCormick, MOMCX, who uses healthy doses of humor, technology, and experi-ence to cover everything from antenna modeling and construction to operating. Also, Hayden Honeywood, VK7HH, whose channel seeks to educate, inspire, promote, and get people involved to learn about ham radio. This list of both regional and international ham radio content creators goes on and on.ö

Congratulations to Hayden VK7HH and if you haven’t already check out his Ham Radio DX YouTube channel.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Club Member finally get his licence

Anthony VK7AAQ has finally received his foundation licence call sign, after a long delay in processing. Anthony was active on the Wednesday net, as well as blowing the cobwebs out of the NW repeaters during the week. Congratulations Anthony, another new FCall in the NW.
Amateur’s 100th Birthday

On the 23rd September, retired Club member and amateur Ken Hancock celebrates his 100th Birthday. Ken VK7KH resided in Burnie, and became the Toyota Motor vehicle distributor and was responsible for importing the first diesel Landcruisers into Tasmania. With no tax on diesel in the early days, according to Bob VK7BY, a 44 gallon drum of diesel cost $15, so many farmers were keen to purchase a diesel 4WD!

Besides his amateur radio, Ken was a very keen golfer, spending much time playing golf at the Wynyard Golf Course.

According to Malcolm VK7NSS, he played a game of golf with Ken, over a trailer load of sheep, with Malcolm winning the game!

Ken was a prolific operator on the HF bands both CW & SSB, on one of Eric’s last visits, Ken had a big smile as he proudly displayed he could still send CW accurately.

Ken told Eric, obtaining his amateur licence, opened many doors, he spoke to many amateur’s in Japan and Europe, as well as many other countries. Ken travelled to Japan on numerous occasions, and stayed with amateur’s he regularly talked to on air. Ken once stayed in an actual Castle in Europe, with a real count, a historical title of nobility in certain European countries. He communicated with the Count on HF.

Ken made all these contacts on a multi trap vertical on the garage roof, and a multiband quad in the backyard. In 2003 Ken was the QSL Manager for the WIA NW Branch. Ken recollects the Radio Club on the North West coast, where they used to meet at Syd Medford’s garage in Mount Street in Burnie many years ago.

Ken also recalls meeting Ken at the WIA meetings in Lakins Hall in Ulverstone in the 1980s. Eric believes that Ken is also honoured on the WIA VK7 Divisional Honour Roll board, now located at REAST in Hobart. When Eric met Ken last week, he was his usual gentle self, and had a great chat.

Ken is now residing at Umina Park in Burnie, a very happy hundredth birthday to Ken VK7KH.

They are particularly good in Aged Care facilities where you can set one up and be able to operate amateur radio without having to find space for large antennas.

DATV Experimenter's Night

We started the DATV Experimenter's Night looking at the 3.4GHz SG-Labs Transverter with Alan VK7KAJ.

Both Justin VK7TW and Alan had setup the transverter with a 70cm Handheld and the Transverter using the 3.4GHz PCB yagi antenna that came with the Transverter.

http://www.sg-lab.com/amateur.html

We showed the specifications and jumper settings and then tested each setup. Alan then headed into clubrooms and out into the domain compound to check directivity. This was somewhat difficult as the signal level at 3W was not affected by polarity, direction or distance! The only way we reduced the signal was when Alan placed the transverter on the ground behind some earth. We are intending to try bouncing a signal off the Organ Pipes on Sunday after the 23cm QSO Party.

Justin then looked at some NBN Recycling. The cable ties are failing and the label blocks are falling off NBN installations, these are great for labelling antenna lines and Justin showed how he was using them in his shack with pics from phone,

We then had a Hermes Lite reprise. There was a short demo of the SparkSDR software and the SDR Console software.

https://github.com/softerhardware/Hermes-Lite2/wiki/Software

https://github.com/g0orx/pihpsdr

https://www.sdr-radio.com/

https://www.sparksdr.com/

Justin then moved to show a WIA (NSW Division) book called 100 Basic Electronic Projects from September 1982. These included: RF projects, Dr Who projects and other interesting projects

Richard VK7ZBX then joined Justin and showed off his first place RD Contest certificates from 1998 and 1999 for the VHF section of the contest, thanks Richard.

We finished off with reminders of the future presentations and a reminder of the Battle of Britain commemoration on 15 Sept 1940 and the role radio played thanks to David VK7DMG.

A recording of the night is available on the REAST YouTube Channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAYp9jAzKqA

This week at the DATV Experimenter’s night we will have more interesting electronics, more on the 3.4GHz SG-Labs Transverter as we have been experimenting over the last week and much more. There will also be a review of the latest AR Magazine with some great articles on Antarctica including a feature article by our very own Rex Moncur VK7MO. See you then.

We get underway from 7:30pm in the Queen’s Domain clubrooms.

Keep an eye on the REAST Facebook Events for more details. Why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

History News
RAAF - No 3 Telecommunication Unit (3TU)

The following fascinating information was declassified by the Australian Signals Directorate recently.

No 3 Telecommunication Unit (3TU) was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) unit which, in its 45 years of operation, received little publicity or acknowledgement. The unit performed specialist communications tasks in strategic and tactical support to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) both in Australia and overseas.

3TU was formed on 15 October 1946 as a separate unit within the command of Headquarters Western Area and was located at RAAF Station Pearce, just outside Perth, Western Australia. The unit became operational on 6 September 1947 with a complement of less than 20 officers and other ranks.

3TU is regarded as the home of the RAAF Sigsops (Signals Operators) trade, and the staff were revered for their high standard of Morse code skills, along with the unit being a significant training base for junior Sigsops.

The Operations Flight was divided into set room, traffic analysis, reporting, non-Morse search and development and training sections. 3TU was functionally controlled by the Department of Defence (Air Force Office), but operational control was effected by Australian Signals Directorate in Melbourne (variously known throughout the period as Defence Signals Bureau, Defence Signals Branch, Defence Signals Division and then Defence Signals Directorate). The achievements of the unit and the high standards of operational capability were a reflection of the cooperation and goodwill which existed between Air Force Office, DSB/DSD and the station.

3TU has made a significant contribution to the Australian signals intelligence effort, both directly and as a specialist training provider. The unit provided the ADF with communications support 24 hours a day from 1948 to the closure of the unit on 1 December 1991. When operations came to a close, a significant era of Australian defence communications ended.
