At the time of writing this weeks news segment, it appears Autumn has arrived. Perhaps I shouldnt have tempted fate last Sunday by commenting on how fast the months were passing. Along with the downturn in the weather, the V8 car races are on at neighbouring Symmons Plains this weekend, so I expect to spend much time indoors avoiding the noise. That will be easy enough to do though, as I have come down with a minor dose of the flu, so I am rugged up and have lit the fire. Panadol is at hand if needed, in the absence of a good stiff dram. Mind you, while I might be able to avoid the worst of the V8 noise, nothing can protect me from the invasion of windblown rubbish that will be deposited on the home QTH paddocks in the days ahead. Enough of that, lets get down to business…….

Technical session round up – first, its over to Idris VK7ZIR to give you a rundown of last Wednesday 3rd April Technical session

“Our faithful wood heater, Hearth Vader was brought to life for the first time on a Wednesday night this year, heralding the onset of wintery weather.

Peter VK7KPC came in with a 1970 era Eddystone 1830 receiver from his collection. This example had a rack mount case and a 10 position crystal switch and was in perfect condition operationally and cosmetically. It was quickly provided with power, and an extension lead from our vertical HF antenna. There was quite an audience listening to the amazingly good audio from quite a small speaker.

Dennis, one of our newest members working towards his Foundation licence, brought in his new dual band Baofeng T9 HT with a view to programming the memories from a Chirp file. This particular radio has a Motorola style interface and Kevin VK7KJL, who usually has programming leads for most radios, only had an earpiece with that type of plug. Dennis is now on the hunt for the correct lead.

Kevin VK7HKN had his Toughbook laptop out and was busy programming some new frequencies into Ebenezers HT radio.

Idris VK7ZIR with assistance from Andrew VK7DW and André VK7ZAB was trying to get the Chirp application to work on one of the Clubs Linux computers, using Kevins cable. The problem was being able to find the correct USB port to plug into. A work in progress.

Stefan VK7ZSB had set up a digital spectrum analyser and was looking at the output of a medical pendant, which was not operating correctly.

James VK7JAM and Stuart VK7FEAT were in the Radio Shack talking about radio related subjects and Stuart had brought along his part completed UHF Yagi.

Idris had found an interesting stepper motor with a rotary encoder on the shaft. Bernie VK7BR took an immediate interest and was discussing whether the pickup was optical or Hall Effect.

A discussion group started with wide ranging subjects; Kevin VK7HKN was talking about missile guidance systems and ballistics, Peter VK7ZPE then went on to discuss aspects of metallurgy relating to internal combustion engines, and finally, Colin VK7ZCF gave an account of a harrowing experience involving Georgetown fog and a suburban fence! Participating with interest were Ebenezer VK7AT and Stefan VK7ZSB.

Still work to be done on the antenna building, but time ran out and we will have to wait until the week after next weeks Wednesday meeting.”

Thanks Idris for once again providing a very informative account of the evening. Yes as I said Autumn has finally arrived and I am not surprised to hear that Hearth Vader has resumed active duty. Speaking of which, with Anzac Day fast approaching, we now hear from Nic VK7BEE, who reports,

“Australian Military Radio Operators weekend 2019 is to be held the weekend after Anzac Day. For those whose interest has been piqued, I will pass on the rundown provided by Andrew VK5WT, who tell us,

“Hi, Andrew VK5WT, Australian Military Radio Operators 2019 (AMRO) flag bearer here. I have been in communication with the secret AXIS radio operator, who assures me the Uniform, Radio and Park location, batteries are all ready to go for AMRO.

Will anyone hear the station and will an Allied pencil note his details? Will he get reported to AMRO headquarters for a prize? Why is he out of band? He is a Non-Allied station. He is not ham radio and he carries a different flag. Short Wave listeners and Hams and even CB-ers who have seen the website are in the game.

Photo of the mystery transmission will be taken for viewing after the event. Can he slip through our radio Net? Is there a chance of being arrested by car 54? It is the biggest mystery of 2019.

Enjoy the weekend and hopefully this 2nd year will be bigger and better. I will not be on the Internet website etc. during the event but before and after it I will do my best with emails.

Go forth and plunder the airwaves with ANZAC tradition and courtesy in mind.

PS I heard a rumour that if we cannot locate the Axis Transmitter the radio waves will be Lost in Space”.

Hmm, you will probably want further information on AMRO so I suggest you visit the following website, which includes more about the hunt for a secret radio station!

See the internet edition of the broadcast for the website address.

(73 Nic VK7BEE)”

Thanks Nic. This looks like a fun weekend so why not call up the website, take a look and get involved.
Coming events

Technical sessions – Please note there will be no Technical session next week the 10th due to our Special General meeting and April general meeting. Technical sessions will resume on Wednesday 17 April from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.

Special General meeting – to be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at the club rooms, to consider amendments to the Rules to enable electronic banking. Meeting to commence 19:30 hours. This meeting will then be followed by the April general meeting.

Easter break club closures – with Easter looming fast we wish to advise that the last coffee session before Easter will be Monday 15 April. The Club will then close down for all to enjoy Easter with family and friends and then Anzac Day but will re-open on Monday 29 April. This will also give our small team who set up and prepare the goodies for all to enjoy at morning tea, a chance to wind down and have some time out. So please note your diaries. For those that attend the Technical sessions we will be holding a session on Wednesday 17 April but then also having some time out until Wednesday 1 May, so please note your diaries of that change too.

Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. At the moment we have no cards awaiting collection.

Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I dont know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to weekly roundup, then please email the following address

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

REAST May Presentation

On Wednesday 1st May 2019 from 7:30pm we are privileged to have Andrew Klekociuk from the Australian Antarctic Division who has agreed to give REAST a presentation on a potted history of Australian atmospheric research in Antarctica, from studies of aurorae, the ionosphere and magnetosphere, and cosmic rays to modern work on global climate modelling and related topics. There will be some side trips to note some personal highlights, including professional and hobby interests in radioastronomy.

Andrew is a Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division where he has conducted research on the Antarctic atmosphere for over 30 years. He grew up in Tasmania and gained a PhD in physics from the University of Tasmania. He has hobby interests in astronomy and environmental monitoring.

Experimenter's Night Wrap-up

It was great to see Peter back at the Experimenter's nights.

Ron Cullen was continuing his experimentation with his AV azimuth and elevation control. The az/el mount has a directional antenna on it that tracks the radio controlled aircraft to provide a good 5.6GHz AV link from the aircraft. Ron setup a GoPro camera to video the PC screen that was GPS tracking the aircraft and videoing the position of the az/el mount. Ron then took the aircraft for a manual flight around the Domain compound. Ron was trying to work through why the mount appears to be 90 degrees in the wrong direction. This is a work in progress!

Justin VK7TW spent time clearing out the DATV studio and setting up the video playout system. The studio is almost ready for the big re-opening. The last element is the installation of the DATV antenna for the RF signal. We will also be streaming via the REAST YouTube channel. We are intending to have a big night of DATV activities ion a few weeks to celebrate the opening of the new studio. Watch this space!

Paul VK7FPCL was testing his QRPGuys 40m-10m Unun antenna. Paul setup a squid pole and was using a very nice antenna tuning analysing unit to check the antenna. Paul also checked the 40m linked dipole he built last week. This antenna will need some tuning and Kim VK7KB and Justin explained that the height, angle of the dipole elements and the surroundings all influence the characteristics of the antenna.

Richard VK7ZBX and Justin were discussing antenna analysers and the various types that are available on the market - ranging from the PC based Vector Network Analysers through to the handheld analysers and the vast array of prices attached to these devices. If you have any ideas and experiences than Richard is all ears!

There was much discussion and coffee being consumed by others through the night.

The experimenter's nights continue next week from 7:30pm so see you then.

I was at work talking with work colleague, we side tracked onto projects we had done many years ago, got on subject on mailers and terminal programs, I remembered Bmailer (Bdale's messy mailer), I thought whatever happened to those packet radio guys from early 1980's.

I recalled some names and decided to look them up:

Bdale Garbee KB0G - still working and active.

Phil Karn KA9Q - wow, Phil is retired

Brian Kantor WB6CYT - still active with AMPRNET

Doug Lockhart VE7APU - sadly Doug became silent key in Sept 2017, age 76.

Hank Magnuski KA6M - amazing I just discovered Hank involved in Gammafax. Our company sold and integrated their gear with our software back in the 90's, small world.

Stu Beal VE3MWM - possibly silent key

Dave Borden K8MMO - he move to central west USA, I guessing he retired

Paul Rinaldo W4RI - looks to have retired a while ago.

A lot of very intelligent people, successful in their careers and heavily contributed to the hobby.
