John Moyle Memorial Field Day Weekend March 16 -17
Some of us still remember that fateful day in 1960, when, opening the latest edition of Radio TV and Hobbies to read Neville Williams editorial recording the death of editor John Murray Moyle, VK2JU. They were the days when most electronics projects related to radio. It was the beginning of the transistor era but most projects relied on valves and most amateur radio gear was either CW or AM.
Construction was laborious but relatively straight forward. Using a metal chassis, building required basic tools and test equipment was usually limited to a multimeter, an SWR bridge and maybe a dip oscillator.
They were my school days. I well remember listening to VK7AK (SK) on a 2 valve receiver I built to a design in Radio TV & Hobbies. Many post WW2 amateurs in Australia built receivers and transmitters designed by the RTV&H staff headed by John Moyle. Although technology has changed markedly, his influence lives on. Little wonder that radio amateurs in Oceania hold an annual day of commemoration.
Among those VK7s who participated in the JMM Field Day this year were James VK7JAM on Mt George, The NTARC club station VK7TAZ supervised by Kevin VK7KJL, Hayden VK7HH and Richard VK7ZBX on Mt Wellington, Murray VK7ZMS in Hobart, Peter VK7ZPE and Peter VK7PD on Mt Barrow then White Hills. Photos are on VK7 Amateur Radio and VK Microwave Facebook pages.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1472093859714691/
VK7JAM was possibly the only VK7 to have VHF contacts across Bass Strait. Meanwhile VK7TAZ had 16 contacts into VK and ZL on 40 and 20 metres. VK7HH had a 9cm voice contact with VK7ZMS then with VK7PD on 23cm, 13cm, 9cm and 2metres, then again on 13cm with VK7ZPE. VK7ZBX also had a contact with VK7PD on 23cm.
It had been hoped that 3 South Australian operators on their ‘VK5 Road Trip would enable contacts during the Field Day from vantage points in southern VK3. As it turned out, the chosen sites better facilitated SHF communications between themselves resulting in a successful 76GHz contact within VK3. Although VK5ZD reported hearing a very weak signal on 23cm from VK7PD from Mt Barrow, his location was unsuitable for a 2 way contact.
This report has focussed on some QSOs that could not have been made from the home QTHs of those mentioned. That is the main purpose of holding field days. Im sure VK2JU would have been delighted.
The JMM Field Day is open to all but the ‘WARC bands. There were probably other VK7s participating of whom I was not aware at the time of writing. I wish to extend my apologies to anyone thus affected; you are just as important.

QSL News
QSL Card Information
The WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau received the first delivery of QSL Cards from WIA HQ for 2019 in February. Herman has sorted them and delivered/mailed several out already. Below is the list of cards Herman still has from the February delivery. I also received a few weeks ago some cards from the VK8 Bureau courtesy of Greg VK8MD.
Herman will be attending the 'Meet the Voice' gathering at Ross on Sunday and will have all the cards with him.
Herman will also have a lot of cards from the last couple of years which have not been collected or Herman has not yet had advice as to whether you actually want them or not. As mentioned late last year, I will be dropping these uncollected cards off at the WIA Archives next time I go to Melbourne.
Please advise Herman by email if you want your cards.

North West Tasmania Radio & TV Group (NWTR&TVG)
http://www.vk7ax.id.au/atvgroup/
North West Tasmania Radio & TV Group held a Barb B Que on the long weekend 9th March at Legion Park Ulverstone. The weather was perfect and all there seemed to enjoy themselves.
Both the Bar B Ques were used and quite a few meals dished up from them to the families. A few of us cheated and sat back and watched while enjoying a picnic lunch and taking it easy. It was nice to have some radio friends visit the group on the day and every one mingled and chatted in the sunshine, photos were taken and generally a nice day had by all. Thanks for coming and thank you to the friends who took the time to come for a chat.

Notice of meeting.
The next club meeting of the NWTR&TVG is scheduled for the 6th of April at Scout hall in Ulverstone starting at 2pm I am hoping to have a good roll up of members, and visitors are most welcome to join us.
It would be appreciated if you could supply a small plate for afternoon tea please. Tea and coffee supplied as usual.
Looking forward to your company

We begin with a roundup of Fridays coffee session. A big attendance and a thank you to Ebenezer VK7AT for once again keeping our spirits up with a good variety of jokes and stories. Ebenezer also brought along a fruit cake that he had made and it very quickly disappeared. If anyone would like the recipe then please let me know. It will go in the NTARC cookbook, yes I am still working on that in between other projects for the Club and home. I hope to finalise it whilst relaxing on the boat next month as the Secretarys new laptop will travel with me. So if you have any recipes you would like added then please email them to me at the following address ntarc.emails@gmail.com
Working bee update - a report on the working bee held last Saturday 16th. We had a good roll up of workers to help with cleaning out the garage. Amazing what was unearthed and even more amazing was some of it then followed a number of our workers to their cars, even though it had been out in plain view in the garage for many, many months and freely available for the taking all that time. The great majority of it however was taken to the tip. Im told some items never made it the dump area but were swooped on by the tip shop. As we say, one mans junk is another mans treasure.
While that team were busily engaged in the garage, a second team consisting of Ros, Trevor and Yvonne were busy removing scout memorabilia off the walls in the main hall for the Scouts to relocate to their historical collection. Once that is finalized, our aim is then to wash all the walls down and give them a fresh coat of paint, hopefully brightening up the whole place.
As promised, a BBQ lunch was provided to all the workers, with André and Ros doing the honours cooking up sausages, rissole and onion. No doubt urged on by the rising aromas of lunch preparing, the garage team notably hastened to stow the final items on the ute and trailer, then securing them for the trip to the dump, immediately after lunch.
The trailer didnt return empty from the dump, it must be reported. No, we didnt transgress any Council by-laws, however much some in the group might miss the days when the basic formula was to bring back more from the dump than was taken. Those days seem to have long gone the way of the Dodo and the venerable 807. We are speaking of woodchips, which are apparently an entirely permissible back load from the tip although in keeping with these modern times, a slight charge obtains, of course.
Many hands made light work of scooping bucket loads of the stuff from the trailer and scattering it over the front garden bed. Another load is required to finish it off and we will tackle that on a further working bee in a few months.
Meanwhile though, we can now walk safely through the garage, the main hall aesthetics are much improved and the garden already looks all clean and tidy.
The welcome news is that the scouts are now planning to sort through all their remaining items stored in the garage and expect to clear a lot of that with a visit to the tip also. The end result will be well worth the effort.
Our thanks to all members who took part last Saturday.
Technical session round up – and its over to Idris VK7ZIR to give you a rundown of last Wednesday Technical session
“A good night with a mixed bag of activities.
Ross VK7ALH still hasnt run out of collectables to bring in and show us, as he turned up with yet another piece of equipment from his collection. This time it was a TMS, a Transmission Measuring Set, made in England by GEC probably around the 1950s. This instrument was very solidly built and judging by the markings was used in a government utility.
Peter VK7KPC brought in a Kenwood TS130 transceiver for checking before sale. A very clean solid little unit.
Peter was also preparing radio fox hunt equipment ready for his next Scout activity and producing many strange audio sounds from the DF receiver. He was attempting to make the Fox look more attractive and recognizable by children, with more than just the plastic transmitter housing. He had purchased a number of soft toy animals with space inside and was working out the best way to hide the transmitter in them.
André VK7ZAB was reprogramming the call sign of the foxes as they were being used away from the clubrooms and were still setup from JOTA at NTARC. Andrés foxes are Arduino Uno boards fitted with a Ham Shield transceiver. André showed Andrew VK7DW and James VK7JAM the simple changes required to the code and the easy procedure used to upload to the microcontrollers from his notebook.
Peter and André were then using an antenna analyser to look at the performance of various commercial hand held antennas, of which some were quite disappointing. André prototyped a 2 metre quarter wave whip out of a length of RG58 by stripping away the outer insulation and shield. The remaining centre conductor and dielectric were then terminated into a SMA plug. The length was trimmed for 145MHz on the analyser which gave and SWR of 2:1. This reading dropped to 1.2:1 when he took his hands off the analysers metal case. André made up a couple more of these antennas and Peter is going to field test them on the Foxes.
Meanwhile Bernie VK7BR and Stefan VK7ZSB were in the workshop, but this time had moved up in size from a stepper motors to a variable frequency controlled Fisher & Paykel motor. They metered out the winding ready for more experimentation.
Stuart VK7FEAT found a corner to study some theory from the ARRL antenna design book.
Later in the evening, another birthday cake was produced to celebrate VK7AT Ebenezers 75th Birthday which was on the day before. The Binary candles were lit (4 out of 8) and a raucous rendition of Happy Birthday occurred as they were blown out and the cake cut. True to form, this was followed by a particularly fruity joke from the birthday boy!
Another late night, but lots to go on with next week”
Thanks Idris for that very informative account of the evening.
Coming events
Technical sessions – Wednesday 27 March from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Why not pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.
Special General meeting – to be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at the club rooms. Meeting to commence 19:30 hours. This meeting will then be followed by the April general meeting.
Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer. We will be open for coffee tomorrow, Monday 11th even though it is a public holiday.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. At the moment we have no cards awaiting collection.
Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to the weekly roundup, then please please email the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

Experimenter's Night Wrap-up
We welcomed a newcomer along last Wednesday night in Boyd who was involved with the StarNet network way back when!
We had a quiet night last Wednesday night with Paul VK7FPCL bringing along a couple of projects from the QRPguys. This online store has many kits and projects for the budget minded low power enthusiast. Paul bought along the Power Port which is a neat kit that tapes to battery packs and gives you a switch, voltmeter, battery & transceiver connectors along with a fuse.
https://qrpguys.com/
The other QRPGuys kits was a 40m-10m UnUnTenna Plus - it has a integrated 9:1 balun for the 450ohm to 50ohm matching to a unbalanced long wire. It uses a non-resonant piece of wire and a quarter wave counterpoise. The PCB that everything is mounted on also also is used as the winder for the antenna wires. It has a multi Z tuner built onto the board and can handle 10watts. A great little SOTA antenna.
Justin VK7TW brought in his homebrewed HPSDR transceiver with an intermittent fault that Justin believes may be related to RF grounding of the various components within the ex-Philips TX815 transmitter case. Justin bonded many of the components back to single point earth and proceeded to fire the transceiver up. This transceiver has a HPSDR Hermes single board DUC/DDU SDR, it has the alex band pass filters, a penny whistle 20W PA and a PiHPSDR control surface. The Transceiver came to life and Justin showed Boyd some of the functionality. The Transceiver is now on soak test in Justin's shack and will probably be at Ross.
We finished of the night with Paul taking a few people through the technology involved in his vaping device. A side cover removed revealed a small OLED display showing voltage, current and wattage for the coil that vaporises the fluid. It runs on an 18650 LIPO battery. Paul took us through the different types of coils and configurations and that there is a strong homebrewing community that creates their own devices - thanks Paul.
We get back underway this Wednesday night from 7:30pm why not bring that project along and make some progress on it or just show it off.
See you then.
