RAOTC
Broadcast for February

This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for the 1st of February 2021; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunda
y.

As forecast in the December reminder, this will be in the new timeslot starting at 8pm.

As mentioned in the National News there are 4 major items this month; the first is:

In 1946 a South African amateur had the misfortune to break a quartz crystal into several pieces, despite this he discovered th
at each fragment still worked as a crystal; this led to the manufacturing of smaller crystals thus saving thousands of tons of
precious quartz.

The second article brings several items from ‘Ohmite Newsâ€Ö; these include: measurement of power in crosstalk, a ‘newâ€Ö e
lectronic term called ‘Ohm Powerâ€Ö and a description of the transistor as ‘the fastest fuse on three legsâ€Ö.

Popular Australian science writer Dr Phil Dooley reports that battery technology may see potassium as a rival to the more expen
sive lithium. Not where compactness is required but for use in conjunction with intermittent power generation.

Those listeners interested in sound and radio may be familiar with the name William Lawrence Bragg (1890-1971). Australian born
, he was the youngest ever Nobel Laureate in physics. Bragg headed a group of Royal Engineers in the development of an apparatu
s that used sound ranging to determine the position of enemy artillery.

This year Bragg is to be honoured by the US Acoustical Society of America (ASA).

Another reminder of the new time: 8 pm local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network and again at about 8:30pm as a telecas
t on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream and in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV.

The date is February 1st. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Callback statistics are sent
 to RAOTC broadcast committee.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

73, Peter VK7PD

A small plate of afternoon tea that has been commercially produced would be appreciated, this being a government suggested COVI

I have single packaged Tea, Coffee and Sugar and disposable cups for members, so it can be kept as safe as possible, and adhere
 to regulations

As usual if you have any unwell symptoms, or been about with anyone that has been overseas recently, or have any other situatio
n that could be covid related please don't turn up.

Make a note of the date of 6th February 2021 at the Scout Hall in Ulverstone at 2pm.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

My goodness, how the month has flown. Here we are at the last broadcast for the month of January.

News is again somewhat limited this week, so it will basically be a rehash of coming events but before that, we hand over to Id
ris VK7ZIR to give you a run-down of events at last Wednesdayâ€Ös Tech Night;

â€Arrivals at the NTARC Clubrooms for the Tech Session were greeted with a mystery object on the table, brought in by Idris VK7
ZIR. It was definitely of the vacuum tube persuasion with a gold plated electrode at one end of the glass envelope, and valve-t
ype pins at the other. It was about 300mm long. There were some interesting guesses from the attendees and when a picture was p
osted on Discord, someone suggested it was a medical probe of some sort! Others thought it had something to do with radar. All
was finally revealed when Ian walked through the door, saw the object on the table and said â€thatâ€Ös an RW42 TWT, Iâ€Öve work
ed with those for years!â€ular example was removed working at the Launceston Radio Terminal in Juliana St. during an upgrade pr
ogram, replaced with a solid state amplifier. It had been part of a 4GHz system with an output of 16 watts. This started a disc
ussion between those members who had experience with these devices from past careers with some funny stories coming out.
r counterpoise† ? VK7PAK/P Kerry, this time Portable from Black River near Stanley.

Thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting Discord and Phil VK7ZPD - with 10 stations logged-in

On line topics and photos included:

    • Photos of Nicâ€Ös latest QRP AM rig and circuit - still working on the modulation; along with pics of his modified dril
l bit to make a quick prototype board.

    • Mystery object from Idris at the Clubrooms!

    • Congratulations to John VK7FJFD on his upgrade and possible new callsign VK7JFD - great to see an octogenarian with suc
h an achievement! Well done ohn!

    • Peter VK7PD notes the new time for the RAOTC broadcast this Monday 1st Feb at 8pm. Callback at 8:30pm...please!

    • Phil VK7ZPD posted a pic of a Kenwood linear that is soon to arrive.and how he is trying to KEEP IT QUIET from his XYL.
So please join the line to receive gratuities from Phil to keep quiet. Ha ha!....and finally

    • A pic of Philâ€Ös grandson on his bike at Derby, about to run over a black snake. The grandson is now showing great pro
mise as an exceedingly fast cyclist, and runner, for the next Olympics!

Greetings to those who also listen in, but canâ€Öt transmit; and, those who listen to us on SDRs around the world via the Inter
net, wherever you may be!

This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky (Double Scotch), on behalf of the Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club, now Signing Clear.â€2021
Membership fees – to all those members who have not yet paid their 2021 subs, a reminder that you officially became listed a
s unfinancial on the register on the 1st January. If you are in that boat, then this might be an appropriate time to remedy tha
t situation.

In case you have forgotten, NTARCâ€Ös 2021 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Famil
y member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership la
pse for any reason, please consider rejoining. Why not pop into the clubroom on a Friday, during coffee hours and collect an ap
plication. You will be made most welcome.

If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct
donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, e
ither in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be acce
pted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater projects.

Annual General Meeting

The REAST AGM is being held today - Sunday 31st January 2021 at 11am. The AGM will be followed by an informal discussion about

See you there.

VK7RAD Digital Voice Repeater Update

With increasing popularity of digital voice modes the VK7RAD Digital Voice Repeater has had a slight configuration change with
DMR Talk Group 505 (Australia-Wide) now requiring "user keying" to activate rather than being permanently linked. All this mean
s is that before you put a call out on TG 505 that you key it using your PTT for a couple of seconds, release, and then PTT to
talk.

The reason for this change is to stop the repeater from being tied up by inter-state TG505 traffic, which locks people out of u
sing other modes on the repeater while active. Please note other talk groups such as 3807 remain permanently linked.

DATV Experimenter's Night

The presentation last Wednesday night started with Richard VK7ZBX taking the audience through his 10GHz rainscatter contact wit
h Rhett VK3WE.

Rex VK7MO then took the audience through his analysis of his contacts with Rhett using both Rain Scatter and Troposcatter on 10
GHz over the 500km path to Gippsland.

These contacts were using Q65 the new WSJTX mode and Rex took the audience through the advantages that this mode has due to imp
roved sync methodology.

Rex made the comment that he can make contact with Rhett most of the time on either rainscatter or troposcatter. Rex showed one
notable time when he did not make contacts and analysis of the ionosonde data at Melbourne airport showed an extremely strong
duct at 1000 ft which would have been stopped by mountains in Tasmaniaâ€Ös highlands. Thanks to Rex and Richard.

Justin VK7TW then took the audience through the new 3D printed box and alignment templates for the Waverley ARS Powerpole kits
and compared the old design and the new.

Justin then showed some SWR Bridges that he ordered and received from the internet that he will be using in some annual antenna
tuning units he is building with roller inductors.

Justin then finished off with a review of the latest VK QRP Club - Lo-Key Magazine. The videos for our RF viewers included usin
g a COmmodore 64 to communicate with the ISS, a teardown of a 80's Missile Target Display, The NIMO Tube: Rarest And Most Dange
rous Digital Display Of All Time and finished with AT&T Archives: A Modern Aladdin's Lamp, about vacuum tubes from 1940

Apologies that we did not stream on the night due to issues we were havig with REAST google logins. We did record the night and
the video of the evening will become available on the REAST YouTube Channel in the next few days.

https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/videos

This coming Wednesday will continue our DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Night with antennas, satellites, magazine reviews, projects and m
uch much more. We get underway from 7:30pm in the Queenâ€Ös Domain clubrooms.

We will be providing DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Night throughout the holiday period so keep an eye on the REAST Facebook Events for
more details. Why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Do
ngle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV E
xperimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
