Silent Key
Cliff Auton

Born 23 April 1931 and went silent key on 4 January 2021 in his 90th year. Loving husband of Lyn for 60 years. Father and fathe
r-in-law to Chris and Chiharu, Vanessa, David and Jane, Peter and Paula. Pop to his eight grandchildren and one great grandchil
d.

Cliff was a regular attendee at club events and meeting. He did not have a callsign however his interest in radio was sparked w
hen he did National Service and became a morse code operator.

He had an interest in electronics both professionally and as a hobbist. Dave Marsland VK7DM worked with him at EIL Services (A
STOR TV and Radio) in the 60s and 70s. Cliff worked with Ian Filby (VK7ZIF), Don Finlayson and Phil Hecksher and had a Shortwav
e Listeners Licence. He was a member of the retired TV and Radio Serviceman's Association and always attended the annual end of
 year dinners.

Cliffâ€Ös funeral was held at the Wellington Chapel Cornelian Bay Cemetery on Monday 11 January 2021.

Vale Cliff.

Dave Marsland, VK7DM

Silent Key
Charles Payne VK7PP

Born 5 July 1926 and became silent key on 10 January 2021 aged 95 at the Freemasons Home Lindisfarne.

Lex VK7LW first met Charles Payne in 1968 at the Electrolytic Zinc Company in Hobart.

Charles as Engineer in Charge of the Instrumentation Section of the Research Department, approached Lex to see if he would be i
nterested in joining his group to contribute to develop, construct, install and maintain Process Control Instrumentation to mea
sure and control all facets of the chemical process at the Zinc Company.

Lex agreed and a 52 year association began.

Lex met in the Section a ‘Radio Hamâ€Ö, the Late (Jack) Gordon Hopwood VK7GJ and Jack encouraged Lex to learn CW.

At this point Charles told Lex he had wanted to sit the AOCP, but his studies for his Science Degree prevented it . University
took preference. Charles was a great Engineer with time for everyone.

Jack and Lex started whistling in the Laboratories and this soon intrigued Charles who asked why we whistled so much. We told h
im we were just happy, but we were really practicing CW. Charles frowned.

One day in 1978 Charles came out of his office and said - Ok you two, after all these years I've worked out why you whistle so
 much !

You are whistling messages to each other in Morse Code.Thatâ€Ös it, Iâ€Öm seriously going to study in my spare time to get my A
OCP.

In 1988, Charles now retired, sat his AOCP and passed and took out the callsign VK7PP which he held until his passing. Charles
was responsible for the Sunday WIA News re Broadcast in

Hobart on 20 metres for many years.

Charles attended the REAST Wednesday Afternoon group for many years until his health made it difficult to ride in the car.

Charles was one of natureâ€Ös true Gentlemen and had that impact on all who met and knew him.

Vale Charles

Lex Jacobson VK7LW.

Ambulance Tasmania Paging Website

We have been able to confirm that the website reported recently in the media that was decoding and posting Ambulance Tasmania p
ager messages was not set up by an amateur radio operator.

It has been alleged that it was set up by a telecommunication security company to prove the insecurity of the existing system.

Yes, amateur radio operators have the skills and knowledge to set up such systems however, we would hope that licenced operato
rs would know better than to publish personal details that clearly infringes various privacy and telecommunications legislation
 and regulations.

Contest News
Ross Hull Memorial VHF UHF Contest

The Ross Hull memorial contest is currently underway for the entire month of January. From previous years VK7 has not had a hug
e number of log submissions for this contest. This is the year we want to make a difference. The Ross Hull memorial VHF-UHF con
test runs for the whole of January and is a good chance to make some contacts on the higher bands. You can even use the contact
s from the Summer Field Day in this contest as well.

It occurs to me that we have a great 23cm net on a Sunday morning both in the North and South of Tasmania, so what better oppor
tunity to get many operators on to exchange some numbers on 23cm, and even on the other VHF UHF bands. I would like to propose
that this Sunday the 10th of January we gather on 1296.50 after the 23cm net has completed at 11:00am local and look at exchang
ing some call signs and numbers. If people are keen, we could branch off to other frequencies on other bands such as the favour
ites 52.525, 146.500 and 439.00 on FM.

VKCL is one of the particularly good logging programs that will take care of logging and scoring based on your Maidenhead Locat
or. There is a new version of VKCL V4.13.1 A quick search will lead you to the downloads area.

Rules are on the WIA website and there are Sections for Best 7 days Digital and Analog, and Best 2 days Digital and Analog so s
omething for everybody.

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/rosshull/

Have a look about to discover your current Maidenhead Grid Square. There are web sites that you can select your location and of
course mobile phone apps that will give perfectly accurate results. You really only need 6 figures.

73, Richard, VK7ZBX

--------------------------------
Summer VHF/UHF Field Day

The WIA sponsored Spring Field day is currently underway as we speak up till 01:00 UTC so have a listen on the usual frequenci
es and help top up the points of the extra keen operators that are doing the full 24 Hr section, itâ€Ös tough and your contact
could help.

Frequencies are not set in stone but a good start 6M – 50.150 USB or 52.525 FM, 2M 144.150 USB or 146.500 FM, 70cm 432.150 US
B or 439.000 FM, 23cm 1296.150 USB or FM, 13cm 2403.150 USB, 9cm 3398.150 USB, 3cm 10,368.150 USB

And please donâ€Öt forget to send your log in!!

Hope to hear you on the bands!

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPjilxLMPhM

Last Wednesday night was started by Justin VK7TW and Anthony VK7LAG who started with a description of Anthony and Justin's IC-7
05 cases. Anthony's case is a Sistema waterproof box with bubble wrap that fits the IC-705, microphone and power connector. Ant
hony calls it the ghetto case! Anthony uses a LiFePO4 12V battery and SOTABeams 40/20m dipole as his mobile pack. Justin's case
is a cool bag lunch zip box that has foam inserts that accomodate the microphone, morse key and bluetooth microphone. Justin
uses an older version of the LiFePO4 battery and an 8 band linked dipole as his SOTA radio pack. Justin and Anthony then went t
hrough some of the other cases that have been posted to the IC-705 Facebook group to give people ideas of what other ideas are
out there. Thanks Anthony.

Richard VK7ZBX then took the audience through the Summer VHF/UHF Field Day which is on this weekend then moved to the Ross Hull
Memorial Contest which is a VHF and above contest that runs for the month of January. The logging is in UTC time and therefore
there is an opportunity for double points each day at 11am each day as there can only be one contract per day.

Justin VK7TW then went through how SPO2 absorbed oxygen monitors. Consumer electronics like a Fitbit now have SPO2 monitors. Th
e device passes two wavelengths of light through the body part to a photodetector. It measures the changing absorbance at each
of the wavelengths, allowing it to determine the absorbances due to the pulsing arterial blood. One LED is red, with wavelength
of 660 nm, and the other is infrared with a wavelength of 940 nm. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more infrared light and allows
more red light to pass through. Deoxygenated hemoglobin allows more infrared light to pass through and absorbs more red light.

This coming Wednesday will continue our DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Night with antennas, satellites, magazine reviews, projects and m
uch much more. We get underway from 7:30pm in the Queenâ€Ös Domain clubrooms.

We will be providing DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Night throughout the holiday period so keep an eye on the REAST Facebook Events for
more details. Why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Do
ngle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV E
xperimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
