John Moyle Field Day Reminder

As mentioned in the national bulletin, the John Moyle Field Day is on March 16 and 17, thatâ€Ös next weekend; its main purpose is to familiarise amateurs with working in the field – that is away from the shack and commercial power on all bands. Having said that, there is also a need for field operators to have stations to work.

So if you feel disinclined to set up a field station your contribution is still valuable, and will attract points, if you operate from the home QTH. Rules are available on the WIA website under the ‘For Members/contestsâ€Ö tab.

Of special interest to VK7s might be the possibility of contacting members of the ‘VK5 Road Tripâ€Ö on microwave frequencies. VK5s ZD, KK and ZT plan to be in the Melbourne area over the Field Day weekend QRV on frequencies from 1296MHz up to red light wavelengths. The exact location is yet to be announced; they have been posting on the VK Logger forum under the ‘Microwave and Optoâ€Ö heading.

There are plans afoot for NTARC members to operate their club station VK7TAZ from the Rocherlea Clubrooms, mainly on HF at this stage. Liaison should be possible on the VK7RAA repeater, 147MHz.

So come on VK7s, weâ€Öve shown what we can do in RD contests, letâ€Ös show the world what we can do for John Moyle.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Chat & Show group

Hi Guys & Gals,

Saturday 2nd March, was the first meeting of the North West Chat & Show group, at the Penguin Sports Centre, this event was organised by probably Tassie 2nd oldest YL Amateur VK7HSC Shirley, she felt there was a need for Amateur to meet up, from any club or non-club members, or people who were interested in radio, to talk radio, play radio, or bring items to have a chat about.

The event attracted 12 amateurs, a very warm welcome was made to VK7PD who travelled from the north of the state, and to Ben who had acquired a Icom IC R70 receiver as an inheritance, and wanted to know how to operate it.

Steve VL7LA brought along a dipole to give to Ben, and to show him how to operate it, as Ben lives about 50 mins from the meeting location.

Ross VK7WP gave an on air demonstration of DMR through a hot spot, talking to amateurs in the USA and England, which was very well received, Anne VK7BYL probably Tassies oldest YL amateur, who has recently became active again, brought along a pair of still working 1970s Tama Denki 6CH 2M HandHelds that had CHs 50 & 60, and crystals set up to operate repeaters VK7RAA in the Nth, VK7RNW in the NW.

Every one brought along a plate of afternoon tea, and the meeting finally wrapped up around 5pm, we thought the event was a great success and look forward to the next bi monthly meeting.

Ross became aware, Shirley was paying for the hire of the facility so, the hat was passed around, and the proceeds given to Shirley. As the Sports centre has lots of grassed area, and 102m above sea level, we hope to engage in some HF and 2/70 activities at future events.

Details of the next Bi Monthly meeting will be on the WIA news broadcast.

March RAOTC Broadcast Video Stream Relayed to ATV repeater in VK5.

As mentioned previously, the RAOTC Broadcast is part of the Monday Night program titled  "Amateur Radio World wide News" and is streamed from VK7AX as a Video Cast on Monday Nights commencing at 8.00pm and runs for 60 Mins.

Last Monday Tony received a request from Bevan VK5BD to relay the Video Stream to the ATV Repeater VK5RDC.

Reports from Bevan was that 5 people viewed the stream via the ATV Repeater.   Comments from the Viewers was that they were ready to view next month's RAOTC Broadcast.

Bevan advises us that the ATV Repeater VK5RDC is located on a well sighted hilltop, undergoing recent development work and upgrades broadcasting at 720 HD DVB-T with about 80Watts.

The farthest viewer to date is 285km's from the repeater.  Bevan VK5BD stated that they were pretty impressed when the station reported seeing the signal. The station is in an elevated spot and almost directly down the Spencer Gulf with very few obstacles in the way.

It is pleasing and rewarding to hear that the Video Stream is being viewed in distant areas.

Regards

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Yesterday we held our March BBQ Meeting and as todayâ€Ös news segment is necessarily written prior to the event we will provide you with an update on happenings in next Sundayâ€Ös news.

Technical session round up – and itâ€Ös over to Idris VK7ZIR to give you a rundown of last Wednesday nightâ€Ös activities;

“Once again, a good turn up with everyone getting having a coffee and getting very busy.

Simon VK7FSRM had succeeded in his installation of an Amateur Radio flavoured Ubuntu Linux distribution and was very pleased with himself. The system included a suite of applications for Digital Modes.

Peter VK7KPC was tuning a small DF Yagi with his RigExpert Analyser. He had to modify the Delta Match with a hacksaw to finally get the impedance right.

Peter also showed us a 3D printed housing for a SB50 Anderson power connector. Very neat thanks Pete.

Ross VK7ALH had brought in an electric fence controller circuit board he was working on. A switching component had failed, and was proving hard to identify. It was a three terminal device which looked like a transistor, but the board markings said Gate, Drain and Source, so it was assumed it was a power FET. Further investigating with a tester and some markings eventually identified it as a TRIAC. There was plenty of interest and advice given.

Another Peter VK7PD, came and showed us a recently acquired 3.4GHz preamp with a gain of 14dB, all installed in a very nice diecast box with SMA connectors and a power feed-thru.

Two of our members recently had birthdays, so a Birthday cake materialised, complete with candles. Bernie VK7BR and Idris VK7ZIR shared the blowing out of the candles and had a wish each!

Bernie then retired to the workshop to continue his study of different types of stepper motors, assisted by Stefan VK7ZSB.

Kevin VK7KJL was ensconced in the Radio Shack having a listen around the bands.

In the main room, Colin VK7ZCF, Peter VK7ZPE and James VK7JAM were gathered around the table with Ebenezer VK7AT, having an animated discussion about the intricacies of cathode ray tubes as used in Black & White and colour TVs in times gone by. Ebenezer threw in the occasional joke keeping everyone happy.

Thatâ€Ös all for this week, stay tuned for the next one.â€

Thanks Idris. It really is great to see all enjoying these nights. They really help make all the effort involved in finding and operating our own clubrooms worthwhile. The weather is cooling though, so it wonâ€Öt be long before Hearth Vader will need to be lit to keep all attendees snug and warm.

Mug Order – Yes Mike, you were correct in your guess on last Sundayâ€Ös broadcast that we arenâ€Öt talking about some new order of chivalry or some dark-sided alternative. We are talking of ordering coffee mugs. This is our final request though as we would like to place our Order within the next 7-10 days. If you are interested in having your very own personalised mug which shows the Club logo on one side and your name and call sign on the opposite side, then please contact our Treasurer André.

André can be contacted by

	email treasurer @ ntarc.net

or at coffee mornings on a Monday and Friday or at the weekly technical sessions. Cost of a personalized mug is $10.00. If you are not too sure what they look like we suggest you pop into the club on a coffee morning and you will be able to view one.

Coming events

Technical sessions – Wednesday 13 March from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Why not pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.

Working bee – Yes, it has become something of a club annual tradition but this is your final reminder that it will happen next Saturday the 16th March. Meet time will be 10.00 am at the Club room. No construction or electrical work will be undertaken this time around, which is probably good news for our canite ceilings! Our main task will be to clean out the garage. As I mentioned last week, the floor is getting hard to find under the growing accumulation of boysâ€Ö “treasureâ€. I remain convinced though that much of it is just junk. Whatever, it is lying around and the area is becoming a danger zone when you need to walk through to the other hall. Assuming we do manage to clear some space, we will be able to cook up some sausages and hamburgers for the workers and we will even provide the bread and sauce to go with them as well. Tea and coffee will be available. Looking forward to seeing many attendees there to help sort, pack, demolish and load utes to take the residue the tip.

Coffee mornings – A reminder that our twice-weekly coffee sessions are normally held every Monday and Friday commencing at 10.00 am and running through till about noon or longer if members want to linger longer. We will be open for coffee tomorrow, Monday 11th even though it is a public holiday.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. At the moment we have no cards awaiting collection.

Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to the weekly roundup, then please please email the following address

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

Fire up the Wire Competition

Fire up the wire is a Facebook group who recently held a competition for those who sat and passed their F Call.

The following is from the original post.

“Fire Up The Wire Competition Rules.

This competition is being implemented to encourage operators who havenâ€Öt sat their Amateur Radio licence exam yet. It is open to first time Amateur licence candidates, being Foundation, Standard or Advanced, as long as this is your Entry into the world of amateur radio. An upgrade exam does not qualify you for this competition, you must be a new licence holder.

The competition will run for 7 months from the start date, which is 7/9/18 and entry is your new callsign, as shown on the ACMA database as Granted. Remember that there are delays in WIA and ACMA processing of licence documentation, of up to 4 weeks, which is why weâ€Öre allowing 7 calendar months for what is in effect a 6 month competition. You need to have sat the exam at least 6 months from competition start, to have a chance at getting your new callsign on the ACMA database in time. All new verified callsigns will be placed in a hat and the winners drawn.

What will you win you ask. Well feast your eyes on this.

Icom ic706. 100watt HF+6 meters , 10watts on 2 meters. Remote mount for control head. All band multi mode jam radio

But wait, we are also giving away.

Yaesu FT2400 2m radio. 50/25/5 watt radio. 31 memories.

If your thinking of taking that next steep now is the best time to hit the books.
Fire Up The Wire would like to thank the member who has so very kindly donated the radios to the group to be put up for you guys to win... Best of luck to you all.. Happy studying.â€

The two F-Calls who won the contest were…..

Robert Lake VK3FDZR won the 706 and

Jarrod Marney VK7FPFV won the 2 mtr radio.

Congrats to them both and the group for putting on the competition.

Special Presentation – Radio Astronomy

We were lucky enough to have Brian Coleman G4NNS come along last Wednesday night thanks to some fast work by Larry VK7WLH. Brian is holidaying in Australian and pardon the pun but “the stars aligned!†and he was in Tasmania on a Wednesday night.

Brian gave us three presentations starting with a history lesson on Radio Astronomy including the giants of Karl Jansky and Grote Reber. Then Brian went on to the types of electromagnetic radiation including thermal, synchrotron, free-free and spectral line types. Brian focused on spectral line as this is what astronomers use to determine the composition of the object they are focused on and also the doppler shift of the colour to tell its movement.

Brian then went onto using radio stars or supernovas to help setup and calibrate your radio telescope and used one of the Goonhilly large dishes as an example. The second presentation was about spectral line astronomy and specifically hydrogen as it transmits precisely on 1420 MHz. This is due to a hyperfine transition in the hydrogen atom which radiates energy at 1420MHz. Brian then went through his home radio astronomy system and he has achieved a T SYS of 48K without artificial cooling. He down converts the 1420MHz to 2m. The local oscillator is swept using a PIC and Si570 DDS and the 3.7m dish has 10dB of dynamic range. He has a dual mode feed that under illuminates the dish. The output of the IF is in AM and fed into the AtoD converter of the PIC.

He has a pic controlling the azimuth and elevation control for tracking. The software control program was created by a friend. Astronomers talk about measuring brightness and this is measured in degrees kelvin. So Brian has an antenna brightness of 48K so anything in the sky that is brighter than 48K can be detected. He scans the sky using both position and temperature to build up a map of the sky. This all takes place knowing that the earth, planets and sun are all moving – this is calculated as the Velocity Referenced to the Local Standard of Rest VLSR for conversion and correction of doppler shift. Using galactic coordinates to start and converting to celestial coordinates and scanning in 10kHz steps, the results are then corrected using VLSR and plotted to represent one pixel of view! This can be built up (very slowly) to develop a 3D model of the galaxy.

Brian then went on to his association with Goonhilly GHY6 dish. This facility was used by British Telecom for Trans-Atlantic television feeds via low earth orbiting satellites but these days is not used anymore. These dishes are now operated by Goonhilly Earth Station and one of these dishes - GHY6 became available for use by amateurs on 3.4 and 5.7GHz. GHY6 is a 32m dish that was involved with setting up links to the ISS for HAMTV when UK astronaut Tim Peake was on the ISS. More amateurs including Brian were invited to utilise the dish for amateur radio. This included the upgrading of the positioning system to control the dish in a more modern way.

Brian was also involved with the BBC program – Great British Railway Journeys by Michael Portillo visited Goonhilly. Brian was able to bounce Michaelâ€Ös voice off the moon. A link to this video is available on the text version of this broadcast.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05tny00

A huge thank you to Brian for the presentation.
