Get Ready for JOTA JOTI 2020

Although for the first time in many a year the Scouts/Guides
did not make contact re this year's Aussie Event according
to their site
scouts.com.au/blog/2020/08/19/2020-jota-joti-badge-now-available/
it is still going ahead right around the world 16-18 October.
The largest digital Scouting event promotes friendship and
global citizenship, with an expected 2.5 million
participants worldwide and all Australian Scouts are invited
to participate in the 63rd Jamboree on the Air.
JOTA is where Australian Scouts learn about communications
technology and connect with fellow Scouts from over 170
countries. It engages young people in educational activities
that build teamwork, cross-cultural understanding and skills
for the future.
Again JOTA JOTI 2020 takes place from 16th to 18th of
October.

Coinciding with school holidays across Australia, between
27th September and Sunday 4th October is a special EchoLink
JOTA event where members of Scouting with an amateur radio
licence, are asked to join in to connect with other Scouts
across the country in a different way. Just joint the

Hi, this is Phil VK2CPR.
The WIA board is excited to announce the Stage 1 initial rollout
of the new WIA Members card.
The membership Card is similar to the original test I
conducted some months ago to determine the feasibility of
email as a transmission conduit. Email had too many problems
so we decided to use Memnet to deploy the cards. The card
displays your Call sign, (up to 2 may be shown), your
membership number, expiry date and a list of all the current
vendors participating in the program.
If you are renewing your membership or are a new member,
your Membership card is simply downloaded from the WIA
website via Memnet by:
1) Login to Memnet with you Membership number (or call sign)
and Password
2) On the ‘MY WIA Page - Select ‘Pay Invoice
3) Select ‘Receipt Button on the most recent invoice shown
4) Print out your last receipt
5) Cut out, fold and laminate your Membership Card ready for
use.
The card is linked to a benefits Program.
The WIA and several vendors have teamed up to provide a
range of discounts and savings to WIA members when using
their services or purchasing from them. All you need to do
is produce you membership card or quote your current
membership number in most cases.
Discounts will vary depending upon the retailer;
Each Vendor has their own discount structure for WIA members
Some very deep discounts are being offered by the major
electronics component retailers listed on the card.
Depending on your purchases and chosen supplier, the
realised annual savings alone can easily be in the order of
several times the initial cost of your WIA membership
subscription. Given the potential real savings and your
financial investment in your hobby already, can you really
afford to not be a WIA member?
Conditions of use, a list of vendors and other information
relating to the new program will be listed on the WIA
website shortly, including some more great new membership
rewards and benefits.
The WIA Board and the many volunteers who support our
organisation are continually working on programs and
initiatives to increase the value of WIA membership for you.
Whether that be via International representation to the IARU
ITU, WRC, local representation to the ACMA or AMC or
providing support and benefits at an operational level at
the local Radio Club or in the home and ham shack directly
via our new benefits program.
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
In the digital sphere, pretending to be someone else is
called ‘spoofing. Spoofing is poorly policed on most social
media because these platforms are organised like
"walled gardens", that is, they give the illusion that
nothing exists in the wider internet outside the wall. This
is logical as their primary purpose is to keep you within
the wall for as long as possible. So, please be aware that
there are spoof pages purporting to be the WIA and it is
often difficult to tell them from the real thing.

This issue might start a tradition.
Where other magazines for amateurs have their annual antenna
issue, this edition of Amateur Radio magazine could be
dubbed our PORTABLE ISSUE.
Amateurs seeking out the pleasures of portable operation
have burgeoned over recent years through such activities as
SOTA and Parks, VHF-UHF hill-topping, microwave activity
days and so on.
Playing up to this escalating interest and activity,
commercial rig manufacturers and you-build-it kit producers
have spent considerable development time, effort and dollars
to produce small, low-volume, low-weight, low power
multi-band, highly-featured rigs, which have been gaining a
foothold amongst amateurs right across the world.
The latest exemplar of this is the Icom IC-705.
As this rig has only recently made its way into the hands of
early-adopters in Australia, we have no less than THREE
reviews in this issue, all from different authors, covering
their impressions from differing aspects.
Naturally, the IC-705 features on the front cover. Look out
for it.
Even our technical "D I Y" feature, an Arduino-based
A-P-R-S Tracker, has that portable "bent".
So, the Pleasures of Portable Pursuits abound in Issue
Number 4 of AR magazine.
There's a line from a play of yesteryear in which the main

TO THE MOON AND BACK
NASA officials have released a nearly five-year, $28 billion USD plan
Monday to return astronauts to the surface of the moon before the end
of 2024, but the agency's administrator said the "aggressive"
timeline set by the Trump administration hinges on Congress approving
$3.2 billion in the next few months to kick-start development of
new human-rated lunar landers.

ARRL seeks changes in FCC proposal to delete 3.4 GHz amateur band
ARRL met via telephone with FCC staff members this past week to
emphasize its opposition to the FCC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
to delete amateur radio from the 3.3 - 3.5 GHz band.
In comments filed earlier this year, ARRL urged that the secondary
status for amateur radio in the band be continued. In a series of
meetings with Commissioner legal advisors and staff members, ARRL
explained how continued secondary use by radio amateurs will not
impair or devalue use of this spectrum by future primary licensees,
including those intending to provide 5G or other services.
ARRL also stressed the various public-benefit uses of the spectrum
by amateurs, including ongoing use of television and mesh networks
on the west coast of the US as part of efforts to contain wildfires.
Hams Help Find Kids by Monitoring FRS Radios
The police department in Post Falls, Idaho, received a 911 call
that two juveniles "ages 9 and 11" were missing from a Post Falls
residence. According to the report, the pair had left home intending
to play in the neighbourhood with some Family Radio Service (FRS)
radios.
Several patrol cars were dispatched to the area to conduct a visual
search, and detective Neil Uhrig, K7NJU, responded as officer in
charge due to his training and experience with missing persons
investigations.
The Detective pulled out his VHF/UHF handheld and heard the
Northwest Traffic Net that had begun on the local 2-meter repeater.
Checking into the net he explained the missing persons situation
to net control station Shannon Riley, KJ7MUA, and asked if net
participants in the Post Falls area with FRS capability could listen
for the youngsters talking.
Not long after Jim Hager, KJ7OTD, reported hearing children talking
on FRS Channel 1. Detective Neil Uhrig, K7NJU Uhrig went to Hager's
home to confirm his observation, and the patrol units were
redirected to the new search vicinity. A short time later, the
missing pair was found safe and returned home, again, thanks to
Ham Radio.
PILGRIMAGE or SACRELIGE
The End Of An Era
This being the planned demolition of a Dayton, Ohio building that
since 1964, symbolized one of amateur radio's biggest international
gatherings the area many Aussies paid at least one pilgrimage to during
their Hamming Years.
The building? Hara Arena, already deteriorating by the time it was
left damaged by tornadoes in May of 2019, had been home to Dayton
Hamvention until 2017 when it was moved to the Greene County
Fairgrounds in nearby Xenia, Ohio.
Amateur Radio NewsLine report "The arena property will also be
rezoned to allow for manufacturing and distribution use once the
legendary building has been taken down."

Portable Operations Challenge
The final rules for the FMH Portable Operations Challenge are
now posted on the POC webpage on foxmikehotel.com/challenge/
N1MM+ users, need to select FMHPOC as the contest and
VKContest Logger users just POC.
The organisers wish all other contests taking place this
weekend success and lots of fun - the bands will be busy
again and we're hoping propagation plays along.
We hope many amateurs give this new-style contest a go whether
from a home QTH station or out portable.

Hot Spot Problem
The Wireless Institute of Australia has for many years published
Band Plans for all frequencies. These are agreed arrangements
for various activities and by and large all amateur operators
have gone along with this.
In some cases the Band Plans reflect International agreements.
With more here from Melbourne is Peter Coussins
"Recently I have come across lists of amateurs running
Hotspots for digital internet access.
A number of these Hotspots in Melbourne and Sydney are
within the limits of 442 – 449 MHz ATV allocation. This
allocation is mainly used for ATV Repeaters and the
Hotspots have the potential to create interference.
Even given that they may not be a problem at the moment
proliferation of these within these frequency limits is
undesirable.
The WIA Band Pan has specific Hotspot frequencies of
438.925 and 438.9125 for D Star and possibly needs updating
to accommodate new systems.
Whatever is the case, they should not be located between
442 and 449 MHz, especially in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane
and Port Pirie where there are active ATV Repeaters using
this allocation for the down link.

Astronauts on the International Space Station carried out an
"avoidance manoeuvre" back on September 22 to ensure they would
not be hit by a piece of debris, said NASA, urging better management
of objects in Earth's orbit.
Russian and US flight controllers worked together during a two-and
a-half-minute operation to adjust the station's orbit and move
further away, avoiding collision.

CAMSAT HF amateur radio satellite launches delayed
The ARRL reports the CAS-7A launch has been postponed until next May,
and CAS-5A until next June. Both these satellites will carry
HF transponders
The ARRL news story says:
“Because of COVID-19, many things have been delayed,” CAMSATs
Alan Kung, BA 1 DU, told ARRL. He said an announcement would be made
closer to the announced launches` which already have been postponed
multiple times since first announced.
CAS-7A will be placed into a sun-synchronous orbit with an
inclination of 98° at 500 kilometres above Earth. The transponders
will have a bandwidth of 30 kHz. According to the IARU amateur
satellite frequency coordination page, the HF/HF linear transponder
will uplink on 15 meters, and downlink on 10 meters.
A CW beacon will transmit on 29.425 MHz
27 YEARS STILL FLOATING IN SPACE
AO-27 was the first FM “bent pipe” satellite and proved to be easy
to work, with a strong downlink and sensitive receiver. The amateur
FM repeater has served many Hams worldwide and was one of the first
"Easy Sat". AO-27 was later used for the first successful D-Star
mode satellite QSO.
The 800 km orbit provides continent-spanning coverage with at least
one station known to have worked 49 US states solely via AO-27!
And there we were last weekend, the 27th of September, 2020,
celebrating the 27th birthday of AO-27!

Eastern states listeners are reminded that there are now two
20 metre transmissions tomorrow. The first is at 00 hours UTC
from Katherine in the Northern Territory beamed south-east, and the
second an hour later at 0100 hours UTC beamed north from Melbourne.
Both transmissions are on 14.150 MHz
At 10 am Victorian time there is a new 80 metre transmission on
3650 kHz, transmitted simultaneously with the 160, 40 and 2 metre
transmissions. Also note that the evening 80 metre and 2 metre
transmissions have been brought forward to 8.00 pm
A full list of transmission times and frequencies throughout
Australia,, including those via DMR, D-STAR and Echo-link can be
found on the RAOTC website raotc.org.au I urge all listeners to
visit the RAOTC website to check the latest information for your
area. Be aware that Victoria is now on daylight saving time so those
in other states who listen via D-STAR, DMR or EchoLink will need to
adjust their local times accordingly.

New WSJT candidate release features FST4
Candidate releases are intended for beta testers,
WSJT-X 2.3.0-rc1 which offers the new modes FST4 and FST4W
designed for use on the LF and MF bands
FST4 is for 2-way QSOs, and FST4W is for WSPR-like transmissions.
Both modes offer a range of options for Transmit/Receive sequences
lengths and threshold decoding sensitivities extending well into the
-40 dB range. Early tests have shown these modes frequently
spanning intercontinental distances on the 2200 m and 630 m bands.

The IARU Region 2 (R2) Executive Committee have announced that
Sterling Mann, N 0 SSC has agreed to be the regions Liaison for
Youth.
IARU R2 will provide support and assistance to the Liaison in
reaching out to young hams throughout the Americas and their member
societies. The goal is to develop and promote interest in amateur
radio on the part of young hams through self-sustaining groups and
activities.

You will be sent a confirmation mail and must follow the instructions
given in that mail to complete the unsubscription.
Once your unsubscription has been processed, you will probably
receive another message confirming your unsubscription from the list,
and at that point you should stop receiving messages.
