Equine Endurance Event Report.

In what must surely be another sure sign of life returning to normal, we begin this week with a report on NTARC’s involvement in the equine endurance event held last Saturday at Sassafras, on the unmistakeable Perry property, site of tractor-pulls, vintage machinery rallies, military vehicle outings etc and boasting its own miniature railway track, if I’m not mistaken? Let’s hand over to Norm VK7KTN to bring us the story,

“This was only the second ride for this year and was held at Sassafras, an area which hadn’t been used since November 2019. This time there was a new ride base, 1 km closer to the Bass Highway, at the very recognisable tractor on the pole in the paddock. The advance party arrived Friday morning with Peter VK7KPC pulling the Comms trailer. The whole site has a gentle slope but we located a suitable area that didn’t need levelling ramps on the trailer; it also just happened to be next to the big green shed where the canteen was going!

Again there was no mains power infrastructure, so the trailer ran the equipment on the 12V battery system. The only mains equipment was a couple of computer monitors that required a 300 Watt inverter. The Honda generator was started about 10am to recharge the batteries. This ran in ECO mode on a single tank for the rest of the day.

The ride started out with what appears to be the new weather pattern for us. Heavy rain overnight with scattered showers during the morning, the ride at Scottsdale had been the same.

We had 3 checkpoints, each with an RFID reader. These worked brilliantly. We only missed 1 read for the whole event.

There were 3 rides held, an 80km event which started at 07:30 with 36 riders, a 40Km event followed at 08.30 with 29 riders and a 20Km event starting at a civilised 09.30 with 14 riders.

The checkpoint vehicles all had awnings but the rain had a strong horizontal component so pads became damp and hard to write on. There was so much mud at the base we didn’t risk moving the trailer until the day following the event, Sunday which had glorious sunny weather.

My thanks to: checkpoint crews Idris VK7ZIR, Peter VK7PC, Roger VK7ARN, Stefan VK7ZSB; Base André VK7ZAB; Software Support Peter VK7SP in far-off Switzerland and Comms trailer transport Peter VK7PC and Idris VK7ZIR.

That completes our 2020 equine endurance commitments until November, when the State Championships again occur at Santarena Park, Scottsdale.

Norm Thorley VK7KTNö

Thanks Norm.

TechNet Report.

We hand over now to Nic VK7WW to give you all a report on the 80M Tech Net of Wednesday 16 September,

“Before the TechNet, VK7WhiskyWhisky (ex VK7BEE) hosted a “TestNetö on 3.580 at 7pm.

Three stations called in: Allan VK7AT, Geoff VK3FTRK from the Goulburn Valley and Peter VK7KPC/M.

Geoff, an engineer, was running QRP, but had built two 70’ towers to support his 80m dipole - his report into Legana was 5/9 +10!

Peter VK7KPC/M checked to see he was getting out ok with his mobile whip from his chilly portable location at Cradle Mountain.

The TechNet for NTARC 7:30pm local time was supposed to be on 3.567 MHz LSB. However, the band was so congested, and VK4KS, who normally runs a net for the Bayside Amateur Radio Club had moved down to 3.567 because their normal frequency of 3.570 was busy. They then moved when they found out it was our somewhat normal net frequency - but then we moved too because of another group who were causing QRM to us. Finally it was decided to QSY to 3.620, which worked well. Thanks to VK4BAR Bayside Amateur Radio for your understanding! Absolute gentlemen.

Nic, VK7WW, ran the net under the NTARC callsign VK7TAZ. The HF net had a total of 10 stations and 80m conditions were excellent!

VK2FZZ Paul in Sydney was trying out his refurbished TS830.

VK7ZPD Phil spoke about an interesting component tester available on the internet and posted it on Discord.

VK7KPC/M Peter was testing his physical capabilities of withstanding the cold, in the car at Cradle Mountain before moving into the nice warm lounge at the hotel!

VK7ALH Ross has finished his loop antenna improvements and is now working on his fourth FT101, this one is a Delta!

VK7AT Alan continues to work on his CW tone decoder.

VK7DW Andrew is progressing with his HERMES loop and is discovering the intricacies of the high impedance amplifier that is used with it.

VK7PD Peter spoke about the pics he posted on Discord of the early history of amateur radio repeaters at Valentines Peak in the far North West and VK7KT Graeme told us about the pile up of stations on FM whilst he was trying to access the cross-band repeater on the ISS (International Space Station) utilising 2m and 70cm.

VK7ZPE Peter found that local noise had reduced significantly on 40m and was trying to figure out why?

VK7KPA Paul was “tail end Charlieö calling-in at the end of the net. He was also keeping an eye on the Internet Discord Channel, where 12 members had logged-in, and was trying out audio streaming of the TechNet onto Discord.

Photos on Discord included:

• Beautiful historic pics from Peter VK7PD of the repeater site on St Valentines Peak.

• Nic’s project - building a replica of the Whaddon Mk III Tx - a 1939 CW transmitter built for MI6 in WW2 at Bletchley Park using a 6V6 and 807.

• VK2TZZ Paul has made his TS830s all “sparkly and blingyö

• VK7ZPD Phil made us aware of a versatile component tester available on the internet - Tester TC-1 which Paul VK2TZZ told him about.

• VK7KPCs warm Hotel Lounge!

• VK7MX Bill’s newly arrived Tiny SA (Spectrum Analyser) in “Sniffer Modeö

• LoKey’s latest Journal front page from the QRP CW Ops Club

• VK2TZZ Paul posted details of his N7DDC ATU relay layout; and

• VK7KPC’s picture of a strange three-legged erection at the clubhouse

Meanwhile “back at the ranchö VK7ZIR was working hard on getting Discord to work at the Clubrooms for the Technical evening next week. Success! Well done Idris! Thank you!

73 Nic VK7WW on behalf of VK7TAZ, the Official Callsign of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club. Catch up in TWO weeks!

Thanks Nic for your usual detailed report.
Future events

Fortnightly Tech Night – Wednesday 23rd September at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, murphy permitting, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.

Fortnightly TechNet – 30th September. Nic VK7BEE will once again be in the chair hosting a “TestNetö on 3.580 MHz at 19:00 local time, with the TechNet for NTARC following on 3.567 MHz at 19:30 local time. Paul VK7KPA will be hosting the accompanying Discord session on the net.

JOTA/JOTI 2020 - Scouts Tas JOTA/JOTI Coordinator, Peter VK7KPC advises that all things being equal, JOTA/JOTI will still be happening this year on weekend 17-18 Oct. We will provide more information on this event as it comes to hand.

Equine Endurance event - State Championships Santarena Park, Scottsdale November 20-21. Rides over the days will be a 160km, 95Km, 40km and 20km The 160Km ride is a 24 Hour ride.

We will need additional crew members to handle this event. Please advise if you are able to assist please email me, Norm VK7KTN: safetycomms.ntarc@gmail.com or catch up at coffee session.

Coffee mornings – currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.

As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.

Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please bear with us as we attempt to bring club life back to normal, while balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email them to either of the following addresses

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.

For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.

We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.

73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

DATV Experimenter's Night

Last Wednesday night we had a full night where we celebrated that VK7 took out the RD for the 5th time and this was due to 20% of VK7 amateurs participating and 70% putting in logs (51 logs).

We had in the studio Murray VK7ZMS who got 1149 and first place, Justin VK7TW in second place with 1058 and Richard VK7ZBX with 1056 in the Single Operator Phone section. We also celebrated that Ben VK7BEN with 303 points who came third in the Single Operator QRP section, Peter VK7KPC came second in the Single Operator QRP Mixed section with 40 points and Anthony VK7FBOC came third in the Foundation section with 253 points.

We also congratulated The Cronies+1 team win who are Murray, Richard and Hayden VK7HH who came first in the team entry and extended their record breaking points score with 2937 points. However the BIG WINNER IS VK7! We took a look at the Golden Logs and then the error report for VK7TW, VK7ZMS and VK7ZBX.

Murray VK7ZMS then took the audience through the 3D printed frame he had printed for his FT-818. This enables it to be screwed to a bench and the FT-818 sits in the bracket, Thanks Murray.

Justin and Rex VK7MO then went through the WSPR frequency stability findings with the IC-705. Justin showed the GPS locked receiver tests at 70cm. Rex then went through his latest test with optical testing with Richard VK7ZBX.

Rex then outlined the new WSJT modes (FST4 15-1800s period and FST4W WSPR replacement 120-1800S period) that can measure down to -45dB below the noise.

These new WSJTX modes are due for release in the next few weeks.

We finished off the night with a demonstration of using the NanoVNA-H to sweep a mystery filter and found out it was a HF low pass filter which is -64dB down at second and third harmonic of 10m band.

The video of the night can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8Sdkkr957M

This Wednesday night we get underway from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain clubrooms with the next instalment of NanoVNA functionality, we will have a look at the End Fed Half Wave (EFHW) kits from Ben VK7BEN and its use with the IC-705 plus much more.

So, why not come up to the Queens Domain clubrooms and see what we get up to. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
