VK7 Contest News
VHF/UHF/Microwave Winter Field Day 2020

A number of VK7s participated in the Winter Field Day contest last weekend and the following reports have been sent through. The first is from Peter VK7PD...

The only 2 field stations I know of in the north were Peter VK7KPC at the Mt Barrow interpretation Centre and Andrew VK7DW & VK7PD at White Hills.

VK7KPC operated on 6, 2 & 70. Andrew and Peter on 6, 2, 70 and 23. 6 local stations were contacted by both. Mike VK7MD at Burnie was contacted by both field stations on 6, 2 and 70; he appeared to be the only NW station on.

N-S contacts were made on all 4 bands to VK7ZBX on Mt Wellington and to VK7HH on 2, 70 and 23.

VK7DW/PD had a voice contact to VK7MO on 23cm. KPC contacted ZBX and HH on his 3 bands.

The second report was from Richard VK7ZBX.

Winter FD began the day before with a pack of the vehicle. Nothing worse than waking up having to do all that so thought I would get clever and pack ready for a swift departure.

Woke up Saturday morning early, checked the Hobart City Council website to make sure the Pinnacle Road was open, it was so yahoo lets get this show on the road.

5 minutes into the journey it became apparent that the 23cm antenna had been left behind!!!

Got to site and was lucky it was free… site was above the cloud level so temp dropped to around 3 degrees C.

All setup with yagis for 2,70 and 23cm and a vertical for 6M. Had gear for 13cm, 9cm and 3cm but way too moisture in the air to deploy that.

Operational about 15 minutes too late but all working well.

Contact came quickly and then slowed somewhat, looked like I would fall short of my desired goal of 100 QSOs but called on a few odd frequencies and convinced some operators to come up.

As soon as the QSO's reached 100 the rain started so it was time for a lightning fast bump out and warm-up!

Once packed up and heading down the hill, was nice to feel the fingers again. Great day all in all.

Then third report is from Justin VK7TW.

Given this was a distance based contest it always pays to try and get some distance between you and your contacts!

Justin headed to Norfolk Point down between Taranna and Eagle Hawk Neck. He opted for sea level clear take off back into Hobart and surrounds and that paid off. However due to a lack of elevation he was not able to make contact with the Northern stations however he did hear some VK2 momentarily on 6m and called however nothing!

6m, 2m 70cm, 23cm and 3cm was setup and all except 3cm operated admirably. Rex could hear me on 3cm however I could not hear him and this has subsequently been traced to a faulty transistor in the sequencer so, put that down to equipment failure.

Justin made a short video of the activation that is available on the link on the email edition of this broadcast.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P-YICvsBkM

Well done all.

Reminder that the spring field day is scheduled of November 28 & 29. It will be fine, warm with plenty of band openings won't it...HIHI?

VK7 QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

The current list of Cards held as at 25 Jun, is in the email version of the broadcast.

I have received another 3Kg of QSL Cards late on Friday afternoon but will not have time to sort and list them for this week's broadcast email. So watch out for it next week. Herman will send the updated list, when completed, out to those stations and/or Clubs who assist with the distribution.

If you see your callsign in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and I am finding some of those operators are new the original owner no longer active and/or Silent Key.

If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau@wia.org.au

Tasmanian Repeater Map

With input from, and thanks to, many contributors, the graphic representation of the Tasmanian repeater network, known as the Tasmania Repeater Map, has been updated.

The increasing cover, complexity and multi-modes of the network have been represented differently, in an attempt to make it clearer.

It's available on screen, or as a downloadable pdf file from a link on the email edition of this broadcast.

The big news this week is that the Tasmanian Premier has announced that Stage 3 Restrictions came into effect from 12pm Friday 26th June. Perhaps even more exciting was his announcement that the State borders would re-open on Friday 24 July, albeit with a proviso that the Government reserves the right to defer that decision if public health advice is to that effect. Lets hope that any such deferment is unnecessary.

In the meantime NTARC has continued with its partial resumption of normality, with once weekly regular coffee sessions, with the most recent having been conducted on 26th June. It was a chilly, but sunny day for this session. We had a good roll up, with all members now used to the social distance restrictions, hand sanitizing and sign in and out procedures. Discussions were many and varied with some show and tell items. Skywarmer kept the room at a comfortable temperature. Surely that is a further sign of things further returning to normality.

We hand over now to Nic VK7BEE, our NTARC Net Coordinator to bring us up to speed with last Wednesday evening's 80M net and its accompanying Discord session.

First up, an IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM PAUL VK7KPA.

"At this time of year our repeater batteries struggle to get fully charged, especially in cloudy and wet weather conditions - please consider this when using our repeaters. THANK YOU."

And thank you too, Paul.

The usual QRP Test Net on 3.580 MHz at 19:00 was hosted by Nic VK7BEE, before the Tech Net at 19:30

Stations logged in included Kevin VK7HKN running 1/2 watt, Alan VK7AT who sent CW, VK7KPC testing a microphone and Ross VK7ALH running 5 watts. Great QRP Signals!

The NTARC Tech Net on 3.567 MHz LSB with Nic VK7BEE as Net Controller VK7TAZ commenced at 19:30 local time.

The net had 12 stations. Band conditions were average. Static crashes slowly disappeared. A great variety of topics tonight!

Coffee mornings - currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all but please remember, we are still required to comply with the current Covid-19 virus restrictions.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries. I can also advise that the VK7 State QSL Manager Herman VK7HW has recently forwarded QSL cards direct to some NTARC members so they hopefully will have been received them by now.

As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, by joining us on Fridays, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.

Once again, this must be all from NTARC for this week. I trust all members are either enjoying the recommencement of some club face-too-face activity or are at least pleased to see it eventuate, even if they have not as yet been able to attend Friday coffee. That said, we do need to all be aware of the continuing need for caution and all comply with the social distancing requirements.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial - it is always good to have something new with which to entertain the troops - then please email them to either of the following addresses

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com or ypmaxwell @ bigpond.com

For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.

73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

The Domain Clubrooms Open

As you would now be aware, the club rooms are about to be reopened, hooray,

With the reopening, and the virus that has kept us away not completely leaving our news service each night, we would be unwise not to adopt some procedures in the foreseeable future.

An email to all members will be sent out after this broadcast with some simple things we can do to keep all fellow members and friends of the club safe during this time. Visitors will have some signage to look at.

------------------------------

Club Room Renovation

At last we can get to the task of renovating the club rooms. Free Pizza, but more about that later on.

We will be holding a garage sale on the 11th July at 10am for 2 hours only. There will be some great deals on a whole array of "stuff" that we need to declutter as well as some items that have recently been donated to the club. The opportunity is there to walk away with a bargain. The time and date again is the 11th July at 10am, pop up for a cuppa and buy a bargain.

Did I mention free pizza? On Saturday 18th July we are looking for a merry band of helpers to deconstruct the main room at the domain ready for refurbish. Basically taking down items from the walls, unbloting, unscrewing, undoing, you get the picture. This will be between 10am and 2pm with the aforementioned free pizza and other delights for lunch. Bring along your ladders and tools or whatever you have to assist, but more importantly can you please send a text or an email to Tony VK7VKT on 0418 136 596 or email toneman @ bigpond.com prior so we know what bodies and equipment we will have on hand and to let the delivery boy know how much food to bring, all are welcome.

Early the following week the room will be redecorated and at least chairs and tables in place for the Wednesday lunchtime group.

On the DATV night the reconstruction will begin with an emphasis on creating the best space possible that all members will get the best use out of. I am sure there will be some new whiz bang features in this room with the fullness of time.

July Presentation Night
ICOM IC-9700 - FAQ - Experiences and Learnings

We have many amateurs in the club who have an ICOM IC-9700 and therefore we have a wide range of experiences with this new ICOM rig.

The session is structured to give attendees an idea of what the rig is capable of, setting it up for a variety of different operations, tweaking settings to get more from the rig, learning from the GPS locking exercise and a demo of the RA-BA1 remote operation software.

This presentation will be presented by Rex VK7MO, Hayden VK7HH, Richard VK7ZBX, Alan VK7KAJ and Larry VK7WLH and it will be presented in the Queens Domain Clubrooms.

You are welcome to come up the clubrooms for the presentation as we have a COVID-safe environment setup.

The presentation will also be streamed on the REAST YouTube Stream and transmitted on RF DVB-T 445.5MHz around Hobart.

We get underway Wednesday 1st July 2020 from 7:30pm and we will be taking questions from the people attending, via Repeater Two (146.700), via DMR Talkgroup 3807 and the Youtube Chat channel.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.

DATV Experimenter's Night - Working from the Shack #10

The idea behind these nights is not to come up to the clubrooms (they are currently closed) but to watch the DATV Experimenter's Night Stream from your shack and interact using Repeater 2, DMR 3807 or YouTube Chat channel.

Last Wednesday night we interviewed Pip Stafford and Julia Drouhin who are Sisters Akousmatica. The Sisters are part of a world-wide movement of sound and radio artists. Pip and Julia took the audience through how they became Sisters Akousmatica (meaning sound divorced from its source) through a collaboration piece. The Sisters focus on providing works that give female and non-binary artists a voice.

Julia is French and was involved in community radio in Paris whilst studying fine arts and other disciplines and has worked with and been influenced by many artists. Pip studied Fine Arts at UTAS and was a recipient of a MONA scholarship and has had an early interest in radio - mentioning her room full of crystal sets she built!

During a collaboration at the NextWave Festival - Pip and Julia decide they wanted to work together and the Sister were born. This lead our RadioQueens to works and installations for MONA FOMA, Castlemaine State Festival and Moonah Community Radio just to name a few!

Julia then took the audience through her work with Dominique Balay called Meanwhile in Fukushima with many other international artists contributing soundtracks and raising money for Fukushima victims.

Pip and Julia then took the audience through their radio and sound artist inspirations and future projects and announced they had been successful with support from REAST in getting a grant to develop a user-eco-friendly FM radio transmitter kit that is uniquely Tasmanian.

An outline of some interesting COVID-19 lock down activities through contributions to an Anti-Virus PNode.net project in France and the feral MBA project along with some interesting costume and mask creations.

We then took some questions from the audience.

A huge thank you to Pip and Julia for sharing their Sister Akousmatica journey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUCFMyJdxP0

We go into recess this coming Wednesday night as we have our Presentation night. On Wednesday 8th July 2020 we will have our next interview and shack tour with Reg Emmett VK7KK

Reg is a lifelong educator who taught many students science and technology along with amateur radio assessments. His interests are many and varied including early microwave communications. Reg is heavily involved with Rotary and this has lead to many overseas missions to help out communities. I am sure this will be a fascinating interview and shack tour.

We get back underway with the DATV Experimenter's Night from 7:30pm this Wednesday 8th July 2020.

History News
The time Australia became VK

The following article was found by Steve VK7OO when he was looking through some Sydney Morning Herald historical articles and reports when Australia gained the VK prefix following the International Wireless Conference in Washington in 1927.

The article is dated December 7, 1928.

EXPERIMENTERS. WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. NEW REGULATIONS. MELBOURNE, Thursday.

Amended wireless telegraphy regulations to cover the activities of amateurs have been drafted by the Postal Department, and details were announced today by the Director-General of Postal Services (Mr. H. P. Brown). The new regulations would come into force at once. The following wave bands have been allocated for amateur experimental work:

Five metres to 5.35 metres,

Ten metres to 10.7 metres,

10.8 metres to 21.4 metres,

41 metres to 42.8 metres,

150.8 metres to 175 metres,

175 metres to 250 metres.

Mr. Brown said that as the wireless services of the Commonwealth developed, it might be necessary to rearrange some of the wave band allocations. It was possible that some ranges might be needed in about twelve months, particularly in connection with the 175 to 250 metres band.

The department would sympathetically consider representations for additional frequencies. Transmissions on the allotted wave lengths must be confined to experiments and tests, but the department has decided to permit the exchange between amateurs of messages relating to the experiments. In no circumstances may messages for a third party be transmitted without the permission of the department. To avoid Interference with other services. Particularly on the higher frequencies, experimental licensees will be required to pay special attention to the correct tuning of their transmitters, and for that purpose approved frequency metres must be installed. To agree with the international regulations, all Australian experimental call signs will be prefixed by the letters "VK" like station 2CM will become VK2CM). Experimental licenses will now be issued to persons who have satisfied the department of their qualifications, and will cover transmitting and receiving experiments. A separate license will not be issued for receiving experiments, and persons who desire to conduct receiving experiments only may do so under a broadcast listener's experimental licenses will be issued for 1 year throughout the Commonwealth. The new regulations have been drafted in accordance with the conditions agreed upon at the international wireless conference at Washington last year. The agreements arrived at will come into operation on January 1.
