WIA 2020 Annual Conference Weekend
Author : WIA Conference Organising Committee
The WIA Annual Conference 2020 is only two months away and is shaping up to be one to remember. It is being held over the weekend of the 8-10 May 2020 in Hobart Tasmania and the theme is "Antarctic Gateway".
Sunday the 10th May 2020 is packed with half day options.
The first option is a trip out to the Grote Reber Museum http://www.groterebermuseum.org.au/ and Radio Telescope at Mount Pleasant - about a 20 minute bus ride into the Coal River Valley.
Grote Reber was the father of radio astronomy, being the first person to build a "big dish" antenna for the purpose of mapping the sky at radio frequencies. He discovered many discrete radio sources, and he mapped the band of bright radio emission from our Galaxy, the Milky Way.
Reber came to Tasmania in the late 1950s because of its unique location at a high magnetic latitude in the southern hemisphere. He spent 40 years studying low frequency emissions with telescopes he built himself, first in partnership with the University of Tasmania School of Physics, and later on his own at Bothwell.
His accomplishments are remarkable, not only in radio astronomy but also in electrical powered transport, in carbon dating of aboriginal settlements, and in the genetic patterns made by growing bean plants. His creative vision had no limits.
The museum has exhibits that show Reber's telescopes, his life's work, and his many other interests. A unique feature is Reber's original radio shack, the control building for the radio telescope array at Bothwell, which is installed at the Museum with Reber's original radio equipment in place.
The museum also shows the radio frequency spectrum with graphic illustrations and physical demonstrations of electromagnetic waves. The radio sky is shown, with matching illustrations of galaxies as seen in the radio and optical spectrum data acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope.
A feature of the Museum is a Virtual Reality Theatre, provided by the Swinburne University of Technology. The museum will show entertaining and educational movies and demonstrations in three dimensions.
The tour takes about 1.5 hours.
This is a very unique and a one-off-must-see museum about a fascinating radio pioneer.
Next to the museum is the University of Tasmania 26m radio telescope that is used for research and you are able to get up close and personal with the dish!
In future new releases we will run through some of the other tours on the Sunday.
To book goto https://www.wia.org.au/joinwia/wia/2020agm/
See you in Hobart.

RAOTC BROADCAST FOR MARCH 2020
That is tomorrow for those of you listening on Sunday. This month the trial DMR airings will again continue at 11.00 AEST on talk group 5 with an extra broadcast on Wednesday at
20.00 hours.
We hear another in the series: ‘Forgotten Women in Science this time it is Maria Cunitz, 1610 – 1664; her claim to fame was the first publication of a book on astronomy signed by a
woman. Some of her writings and calculations rivalled those of Kepler.
The other feature repeats an earlier article in OTN Journal; it is a letter written by Marconi detailing some of his early radio experiments.
As usual this will all go to air in VK7 on the first Monday in the month at 7:30pm local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network and again at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX Spectrum Tasmania" via the BATC members' stream and in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV.
The date this month is March 2nd. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
CHAT and SHOW GROUP
Hello to our group.
On March 7th it will be the next group gathering at the Penguin Sports Centre, Ironcliffe Road, Penguin and it will commence at 2pm and is open to local members as well as visitors to our State if in Penguin on that day.
The aim of the group is to create interaction and friendship between operators, whether a club member anywhere or not, from any location. Just a meet and greet day with some other activities supplied by group members. So, if you have anything you would like to show, or you have made or collected something, bring it along, or, if there is a subject you would like to discuss, come along and join us.
I do ask for a small offering of food for afternoon tea from every one and I provide tea and coffee.
So, drop in any time from 2pm until 5pm, though getting there for the start will ensure you are less likely to miss any talks given. The doors do remain open until 6pm if necessary, but drop in until 5 is so that any late arrivals have time to chat.
Cheers from Shirl VK7HSC

The Seasons.
The astronomical seasons.
The seasons change at the equinoxes and solstices; hence autumn starts March21/22, winter June 21/22. etc. These are scientifically correct. Most reputable references give the astronomical dates as those for season change.
Meteorological seasons. The seasons change on the first of the months of March, June, September and December. Strictly speaking, they are incorrect.
This last week in NW Tas feels as though it has been mid-winter!

Well, yesterday, Saturday 29th saw NTARC hold its shack clearance and deceased estate auction. I will give you an update next week on how things went.
For those who attended the auction, we hope you picked up some goodies at a reasonable price. For those members who just cannot help themselves buying these treasures, we trust you managed to quietly sneak into your shack and hide your goodies amongst your current stash. Luckily for me the OM is still on the mainland busy with the Paynesville Classic Boat Festival so I have been saved from any more items entering this QTH and being added to his enormous stock.
For those of us at coffee on Friday, Nic VK7BEE, the auctioneer on the day, gave us an example of his prowess in this area and he wasn't bad so we hope all enjoyed his banter and professionalism as the auctioneer. What he doesn't realize is that, as a result of that expertise, we have now pre-booked him as auctioneer for any future auctions. We will let him into that secret soon.
Technical sessions - as usual, with these events continuing, we will hand over now to Idris VK7ZIR to give you a rundown of happenings on last Wednesday 26th February and he reports;
“We start with Peter VK7KPC who came in with a home brew 6 metre linear amplifier built into a nice rack mount case with a QQE 06/40 valve final putting out 80 Watts PEP. A nice example Peter.
Ross VK7ALH brought in a Hewlett Packard signal generator model 202H with a frequency range of 54 to 216 MHz, probably 70s vintage and a massive HP boat anchor. With the covers off, it was easy to see why. The tuning assembly was fully enclosed with some heavy engineering, and the attenuator was of the piston type. I have only ever seen a few of that precision, mostly in hugely expensive instruments. Ross has generously donated it to the Club workshop. Many thanks Ross.
We had a birthday member this evening. Bernie VK7BR has turned 79 years young. He celebrated with a single candle decorating a mini quiche. The usual raucous singing ensued with the blowing out of the candle and obligatory wish. An accompanying cream cake completed the ceremony enjoyed by everyone. Happy Birthday Bernie with many more to come.
Andrew VK7DW gave us a rundown of the results from the Summer VHF-UHF Field Day Contest for this year. It was pleasing to see VK7 participation by 37 stations of which 54% submitted logs. That gave us the 4th position in state numbers, a very salubrious result.
In the Single Operator 8 hours, Andrew VK7DW and James VK7JAM came in 5th and 6th respectively. In the Home Station 24 hours, Ross VK7ALH and Peter VK7KPC were well represented. In the Home Station 8 Hours, Peter VK7PD and Andrew VK7DW also featured. Andrew was also mentioned as a Longest Distance Contact with VK3KQ over 514Km on 144 MHz Well done all members who participated.
Simon VK7FSRM had been diligently beavering away all evening finding and installing drivers for another member's laptop. He got it all working and let out a yell of elation, so we all knew he had succeeded and deserved a round of applause.
The discussion table was weighed down with many topics, which took us nearly to midnight. We missed our Entertainment Officer Ebenezer VK7AT, who is recovering from a medical issue in hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he has some good jokes for next time.

2020 Membership renewals - a renewal notice was sent out earlier last week to those few members who have yet renewed their membership fees. Just to remind you, your membership for 2019 expired on 31st December, and for those who haven't as yet renewed, your name now appears on the membership register as an unfinancial member. It will remain as such on that register until renewed or until 30 June, when your name must be removed, if your annual subscription remains unpaid at that date. Please be advised that this was the final reminder notice.
In case you have forgotten the NTARC's 2020 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership. .
Coming events
Technical session - The next session will be on Wednesday 4th March and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm, running through to 10.30 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Pop in catch up with fellow amateurs, bring along something that you are currently building or just ask questions? You might also be able to answer some from other attendees. That is what the evenings are all about, anything of a technical or near-technical nature, however defined, is fair game. Endless tea and coffee along with biscuits is available for a small gold coin donation.
March general meeting - Saturday 14th will be a BBQ meeting but wait, we will not be having a BBQ! Instead, we will be having sandwiches and fruit and cheese platters. We thought a change from BBQ's would be nice. NTARC will provide all the fare for the lunch which will commence at noon. The cost will be the normal $10.00 per person and this covers your lunch and afternoon tea. The meeting will follow at 2.00pm. As always, we ask for donations of cakes, slices and other delights to share at afternoon tea. For those just attending the meeting and afternoon tea it would be appreciated if you could make a small gold coin or note donation.
Coffee mornings - are normally held every Monday and Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
As I remind all every week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and the other services we provide, by joining us at these sessions.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email them to the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

REAST March Event
Innovative and Interesting Shack and Portable Operation Ideas Forum
This night was born from a group looking at pictures and videos of various amateur's shacks.
Steven VK7OO is currently getting his shack back up and running at his new house and he was asking different people about space saving ideas in the shack.
Amateurs are usually resourceful people who have been re-purposing, recycling and re-using things for a very long-time.
So, we have decided to have a forum where everyone can come along and bring your interesting and innovative ideas that you have in your shack, outside, inside, etc.
There is no limit to the ideas - simple, complex, easy, hard, bring them along and talk about them. If you have some show and tell to demonstrate the idea then bring it along. You may have a problem or challenge that you are dealing with - bring
that along and we are sure there will some ideas in the room to help you solve that issue.
The format is a forum where everyone can input their ideas, questions, problems and solutions.
When - this Wednesday night 4 March 2020. We get underway from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms.
See you there.

DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Our night started in the Studio with Rex VK7MO with his fully collapsible 432MHz yagi that fits in a suit case! This is built using electric fence fibreglass rod, aluminium rod for the elements and copper elements for the driven element. The glue used to secure everything is impressive technology called Bondic that is "set" using a small UV LED torch. This is similar to what is used in Dentist's surgeries. The elements are held in place using plastic tube slid along the element and the driven element assembly is removable. The three sections are held together using snug fitting carbon fibre tube. Rex is intending to use this yagi for communications between Hawaii and California along with 10GHz to test the theory that tropospheric ducts may well be frequency independent. Rex also showed "Capton" tape and its strength and versatility. Thanks Rex and we look forward to further innovative developments.
Justin VK7TW then took the audience through the SPaceX Starlink project which is deploying up to 12,000 low earth orbiting satellites to provide low cost internet to remote and rural locations. Wednesday night there was a train of 43 satellites in a line going from the south west to the east over about a 5 minute period. Justin showed an amateur video of them going across the sky. Later in the night Alan VK7KAJ, Warren VK7WN and Justin VK7TW headed outside to try and see the train of satellites. Unfortunately we were out luck due to low cloud cover, however we did see some single satellites crossing the sky.
Justin VK7TW then showed a trail camera that he recently purchased. These devices can be setup to take video and or photos and can be setup to take video or photos when the motion sensor is triggered. Justin used this to see why the chook food was disappearing a little quicker than normal. He then showed some examples showing rats, cats, rabbits, birds, pigeons as well as chooks!
We then showed the latest resource tip shop find which is an ex-UTAS Electrical engineering Dept three phase voltage and current monitoring box from which Justin will be using the case. There were many re-usable parts both mechanical and electronic.
We finished in the studio with some promos of the Meet the Voice and WIA 2020 Annual Conference events then moved to some videos for our RF audience.
Out in the Clubrooms Ron Cullen was showing his latest radio controlled passion which is RC sailing boats - DF65s. These boats are sailed at a dam at Puddle Duck Winery in the Coal River Valley and this was Ron's first try and of the seven races he won two! On ya Ron!
We go into recess this week as it is a presentation/forum night.
So, see you in a fortnight for the next DATV Experimenter's Night.

Mastercom appoints Dale Doyle as general manager
By Jonathan Nally
Australian two-way radio communications firm Mastercom has appointed Dale Doyle as its first female general manager.
Ms Doyle has decades of experience in a finance career that has included working for major stockbroking firms and international banking, training staff and implementing advanced computer-based accounting systems.
She began her employment with Mastercom more than 13 years ago as the company's financial controller.
- When starting out with Mastercom, I pretty much looked after accounts, payroll, HR and hiring, BAS reporting, ordering and even building maintenance. I later ran the Implementation and training of the accounting system from Attache to AX Dynamics, Ms Doyle said.
- I am absolutely thrilled to take on the role of general manager and look forward to making a positive impact on this ever-growing, well-established business.
Ms Dale has also played a critical role in assisting Mastercom's Managing Director, Hamish Duff, in founding the Orion national network that links two-way radio communications across Australia, and in establishing a Queensland company, Queensland Radio Services.
Mastercom has recently undergone a considerable growth in operations and has more than doubled its staff numbers from 10 to 26.
