Registrations and voting for the Future of Amateur Radio POLL
continue to be received. The POLL has been open for some time now
and will close today, so get in quick and have your say.
The first poll is about Amateur Radio Callsigns, and more
specifically about the use of the 4-letter suffix being used by
Foundation Licensees. A number of options presented in the poll but
it will be up to licenced amateurs to select the best option for the
amateur radio service.
The options on the subject for Future polls is also being sought
and you can have your say in the current poll. Mike VK8MA mentioned
recently that nominations for WIA awards are now open and those
awards will be presented at the Annual AGM. Nominations for
WIA Awards should be sent to the National Office.

The Annual Report by WIA committees and Groups are now being called
for. Reports for the year ending 30 December 2019 need to be
submitted by the end of March.

Hello this is Dani VK7FREQ from the WIA 2020 Annual Conference
Organising Committee.
We continue this week with information about some of the other Sunday
activities
We covered the trip out to the Grote Reber Museum and Radio
Telescope at Mount Pleasant last week, this week we cover the
Mawson,s Huts Replica Museum.
This museum is located down on the waterfront on the corner of the
Morrison and Argyle Streets and is run by foundation volunteers many
of which have been South to the icy continent. There is a wonderful
replica of the spark transmitter used in Antarctica to relay
messages via Macquarie Island to Hobart and you will be hearing about
the effect of this technology in Professor Leane's wonderful keynote
presentation at the Saturday night Conference dinner.
The Museum was built to raise funds for the ongoing conservation of
the historic building at Cape Denison in Antarctica which were used
as the main base for the 1911-14 Australiasian Antactic Expedition
(AAE).
The museum is a replica in every sense of the word. Heritage
carpenters, who worked at Cape Denison on the conservation of the
original huts, took hundreds of photographs and measurements which
were faithfully used to create the replica. The baltic pine cladding
and flooring was sourced from the same region of Scandinavia as the
material provided to Mawson in 1911. This material was imported by
the same Melbourne merchant that supplied the original expedition
over 100 years ago.
It is run by the Mawson's Huts Foundation whose vision is to
inspire current and future generations by conserving and
communicating the legacy of Sir Douglas Mawson's expeditions, other
Antarctic Pioneers and Australia's Antarctic heritage.

Here we are approaching autumn in the great south land and in the
northern hemisphere they are celebrating the start of Spring. It is
the symbol of the changing season with the animals appearing in the
landscape that gave us the amusing expression, "as mad as a
March hare".ť
If the weather is suitable you really won't have to be mad to go out
in it with the John Moyle Field Day in the diary for this month.
Getting the gear out and operating from a portable location is
regarded as experience that can be used at odd times if the
circumstances require. So how about clearing your calendar for some
not so mad March madness and blow the proverbial cobwebs from your
operating skills. If you are so inclined, do a bit of research into
who was John Moyle and why we have an event that celebrates his
legacy in amateur radio.

SWAINS ISLAND - PACIFIC OCEAN
Coronal Effect
The ARRL report the W8S DXpedition to Swains Island, set to take
place Mid this month, March, has been postponed due to coronavirus
travel restrictions
The ARRL story says: "Travel restrictions have been imposed on
individuals entering American Samoa, stemming from the recent
coronavirus outbreak. The Department of Health allows non-residents
to enter American Samoa only via Hawaii after a 14-day mandatory
quarantine in Hawaii, and the DXpedition was unable to accommodate
that requirement.
“Everything is prepared for our DXpedition, and we are eager to go,"
the DXpedition team said in announcing the delay. “Although this is
a disappointment for everyone, the W 8 S DXpedition is not cancelled,
simply postponed for later this year".ť

CHINA
The maiden flight of the Long March-5B rocket carrying a trial version
of China's new-generation manned spaceship is expected to take place
in April, indicating the imminent start of construction of China's
very own space station.
The rocket, the prototype core capsule of the space station, and the
experimental manned spaceship are undergoing tests at the Wenchang
Space Launch Centre on the coast of south China's island province of
Hainan.

SOUTH AFRICA
ARISS Radio Telebridge Stalwart Gerald Klatzko, ZS6BTD, SK
When the International Space Station (ISS) orbit is not favourable
for a direct Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
contact with a particular school or location scheduled to speak with
an astronaut, ARISS radio telebridge stations bridge the gap.
Gerald ZS6BTD, of Parklands, South Africa, one of the regularsť
during the earlier years of the ARISS program, he died February 1
at age 95.
He for many years, assisted NASA to link astronauts with their
families using amateur radio links from MIR, the Space Shuttle,
and the International Space Station.
CANADA

Listen up and don't be distracted!
Distracted driving regulations continue to be an area of interest for
many Canadian Radio Amateurs and mobile visitors. These regulations
are made and enforced by provincial governments and can vary
considerably from province to province and over time.

In Ontario, RAC have been working hard on this issue and have
announced effective February 14, 2020, the Ontario Ministry of
Transportation has made permanent the exemption under Ontario
Regulation 366/09 (Display Screens and Hand-Held Devices) of the
Highway Traffic Act for hand-held two-way radios for commercial
drivers and Amateur Radio operators.ť

SAINT KITTS
National society acts over Smart Meter interference
IARU Region 2 reports in Saint Kitts, amateur radio operators are
still battling with the RF Interference, noise and frequency jamming
caused by the smart meters of the electric company
The Saint Kitts Nevis Anguilla Amateur Radio Society took the RF
interference complaint to their telecommunications regulator who
issued a “cease and desist" order to the electric company, effective
October 2019. Today, four months since that order was issued, a
number of stations are still experiencing RF interference and noise
on 40-meter and 80-meter radio frequencies.
Saint Kitts, also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island,
is an island in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders
the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean.
Saint Kitts and the neighbouring island of Nevis constitute one
country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Saint Kitts and
Nevis are separated by a shallow 3-kilometre channel known as
"The Narrows".
The island of Nevis does not have a smart meter system.
ARGENTINA
NEMO-1 Buoy Report
AMSAT ARGENTINA launched the NEMO-1 buoy into the Atlantic sea
January 30 using the callsign LU7AA 70 km east of Mar del Plata.
The buoy, which emits in WSPR mode at 14095.6 KHz and FM VHF in APRS
mode, navigated drifting free for 12 days traveling about 1100 kms
until on February 11th it was sighted and taken out of the water by
the tuna vessel 'Juan Pablo II'.
The captain of the ship, Rinaldi Yaco, considered that the buoy was
sailing semi-sunk and decided to rescue it, informing Amsat Argentina
of that event.
A group of AMSAT-LU recovered NEMO-1 which will be reconditioned and
a new launch is planned. It will be tried to take it, on this
occasion, more than 200 km offshore, so that it will navigate freely,
reaffirming the commitment and contribution of radio amateurs to
QRPp propagation research also helping navigation and the community.
This time NEMO will be outfitted with a LARGE VISIBLE X, the
international symbol for a scientific Buoy
Its label will read " I am NEMO-1, I like the ocean so please don't
take me out of it. "

80th birthday of H.M. The Queen of Denmark in these two DXCC entities

Members of the British Amateur Radio Teledata Group (BARTG) are

VI 250 COOK Australian Special Event
Cairns Amateur Radio Club will activate call-sign VI 250 COOK during
May to August 31 commemorating the 250th anniversary of Captain James
Cook sailing up the east coast of Australia from what is now Sydney
to what is now Cooktown in Far North Queensland. This historic trip
is being replicated by the Australian Maritime Museum's replica of
his ship, the Endeavour.

Cyprus special event
Members of the Cyprus Amateur Radio Society during the entire year of
2020, as it's an important year for the Republic of Cyprus which
completes 60 years since its establishment, can use 5B60 prefix
Specifically, CARS members, will be able to use the 5B60 prefix
(instead of 5B) if they wish, starting from 1 Jan until 31 December
2020.

In 2020, radio amateurs in the North Limburg region of the
Netherlands, are on the air with Special Event Station PA 75 OV.
Just like in 2015 with PA70OV, the station PA75OV is a Special Event
and Memorial Station for the occasion of commemorating 75 years
of freedom and WW-II "Operation Veritable."
Operation Veritable, a.k.a. the Battle of the Reichswald or the
Great Allied Rhineland Offensive that started February 8th 1945
took place in the North Limburg region and was the successor of
Operation Market Garden.
There are no particular band plans, with activities announced on the
DX-Clusters and QSL cards will be sent automatically by the end of
2020 after closing of station PA 75 OV.

FEMALES IN RADIO.
US State law protects ham radio operator
Lindsey Fowler K0WXT has made her mark and drawn attention by
installation of a "short" mast at her home
Lidsey's neighbours are upset over her amateur radio tower is within
her rights to have the antenna on her property, township officials
have confirmed.
An engineer went out to the site to inspect the 40-foot tower and
ensure it didn't pose a safety threat to neighbours, township engineer
Chris Kraft told the board of supervisors.
"Based on that review, we feel the tower is structurally safe," he
said. Lindsey Fowler is the homeowner who built the tower herself
on her property last September.

The next "Flavour" in the 2020 SOTA Challenge is DV - Digital Voice
flavour in the first week of March 2020. This week All SOTA QSOs
completed on DMR, C4FM, D-Star or FreeDV will automatically attract
scoring credit in the Challenge.
As repeaters and gateways are not valid for SOTA contacts, all QSOs
will need to be simplex.

New WORLD distance record on 122GHz
Using low power silicon chips with barely a milliwatt, an astonishing
new world record of 139km has been achieved on the 122GHz millimetre
wave amateur band.
The distance record set in the California mountains is particularly
notable as this frequency suffers from severe atmospheric losses due
to an oxygen molecular resonance that add to significant conventional
free-space path losses.

International all youth contesting team to compete in CQ WPX CW
Seven youth from 6 countries and 4 continents will meet this May at
superstation K 3 LR and compete for 48 hours in CQ WPX CW in hopes to
contend for a top finish, inspire more youth radio sport events, and
ultimately bring down the average age of todayâ€âä˘s contester.
This group of teens and early 20 something year olds, known as
"Team Exuberance CW", are already accomplished contesters with many
individual victories.
All are highly skilled and experienced CW operators, especially
considering some of the team members are still in high school.
Several of them were WRTC 2018 competitors one, Bruce, KN8U, age 21
and a student at Georgia Tech, was the World Rookie champion for the
CQ WPX CW 2019 contest.
This endeavour is the brainchild of Violetta Latham, KK8AT, and is
totally youth driven and organized.

The International Astronomical Youth Camp will take place in Spain
this year from July 12 to August 1.
The camp typically hosts around 65 participants, aged between 16-24
and main aims are to promote knowledge on astronomy and related
sciences in a unique, international atmosphere. Participants work on
a research project of their own choosing over the course of the
three weeks, culminating in a final report.

REWIND
THIS June will mark exactly 100 years since the world's first public
broadcast took place - in Chelmsford, Essex the UK
June 15, 1920, Australian opera star Dame Nellie Melba sung down a
microphone at the Marconi works in New Street Chelmsford. Two arias
in her famous trill.
By the time of her second broadcast a few days later, the great
diva's warbles were being listened to across Britain, and as far away
as New York.
Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi was behind
this feat.
It was in fact only 19 years prior he had succeeded in sending the
first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, disproving
detractors who told him that the curvature of the earth would limit
transmission to 200 miles or less. The message – simply the
Morse-code signal for the letter travelled more than 2,000 miles
from Poldhu in Cornwall, England, to Newfoundland, Canada.
The key role of Essex in the birth of broadcasting was entirely down
to the Marconi company, where technology was produced that would give
Britain the edge over the rest of the world.
The man forever associated with the birth of radio, Guglielmo Marconi
was the son of an aristocratic Italian father and a Scottish mother.
From an early age, he displayed dual skills as a practical inventor
and a natural entrepreneur.

We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 2 minutes in length
as we only have a half hour.
Remember the sooner you submit material the more the likelihood of it
being broadcast in the very next edition of WIA National News.
Each item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple of
mentions, please submit different slants to keep your event 'fresh'
and always if the news room is to read your item ---
write it in the 3rd person.
A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't plug
DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the WIA will put
your supporters 'goods' in this text edition "no worries."
We cannot give blatant 'plugs' to raffles. (new Jan 2019)
