Not long to go now for the Summer Field day for VHF/UHF amateurs. The contest is on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of January from 01:00 UTC – 01:00 UTC. This is a great opportunity to get that VHF/UHF gear out and give it a bit a run. The last field day in the Spring us VK7s were represented very well but unfortunately many didnt submit their logs.

Please try and use one f the great logging programs as your log can be uploaded from within the log program.  We are happy to offer some assistance with installing, using and then how to check and then send your log using the program VKCL. We will ensure that we have a laptop with VKCL at the REAST clubrooms for the next few Wednesday evenings id anyone is interested. It is important to make sure that all entries are done correctly, as there were quite a few mistakes and lost points due to errors in call signs, report exchanges, band, mode etc so bear that in mind.

QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

Herman advises that a number of the QSL cards recently received have been mailed or delivered to some Clubs and QTH's on an opportunity basis. As usual, the list of current cards held as at 16 December is in the email version of the broadcast. Feedback from Clubs as to which cards they can receive on behalf of members would be appreciated. Also, unless requested otherwise by those who have mail out arrangements, if there are only 1 or 2 cards for a station, Herman intends to hold those cards until there are enough to make a mail out more cost effective.

Please note the listings of old cards (second and third lists) in the email edition of this broadcast will be sent to the WIA Archives in Melbourne if Herman does not hear from you before the end of January.

If you have any questions about QSL Cards being held, Herman can be contacted by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Saturday the 4th January, Shirley again hosted her Bi Monthly Chat N Show at the Penguin Sports Centre, where Amateur Radio Operators are encouraged to bring Items for Chat N Show, as well as socialise and enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea.

It was great to have Dan VK7DP a new face attend, Terry VK7JAI brought along a Bore Pump Controller he had made, he designed the circuit, etched the circuit board and constructed the complete unit, and as always great workmanship.

Terry also gave us an insight into his time in National Service, the radio used and procedures and enlightening moments. We finished off with afternoon tea and a chat, pictures of the equipment can be seen on the VK7 Amateur Radio Face book page, the next Bi monthly show and tell will be in March.

NWTR&TVG NOTICES FOR AGM & GENERAL MEETING ON 1/2/2020

It was the end of our membership year on December 31st 2019 so all members are not financial until they pay this year's membership. I do hope you all choose to stay with us.

This also means the AGM is coming up on February 1st and all executive positions are declared vacant. So, give consideration in the running of our club and use the nomination form that will be sent with your notice of meeting. If you would like to become an active member in the running of the club or you know some-one you would like to nominate, please return a completed form to arrive no later than 15 mins before commencement of the AGM.

The AGM will start at 2pm at the Scout Hall in Ulverstone and will be followed by the General meeting, as usual including a cuppa and chat.

It would as usual be great to receive some small offering for afternoon tea, and tea and coffee will be supplied by VK7HSC.

Remember, this club is yours, the members club, so join us on February 1st for the AGM followed by the General meeting and have your say in everything.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

The New Year seems determined to continue in the manner in which it started, with widespread bushfires continuing to menace the mainland States, sadly with significant loss of lives and with massive property losses. Apart from a few outbreaks, we seem to have fared much better in VK7. Let's all resolve to keep things that way.

No real local news again on the amateur radio front. NTARC held its first event for the year yesterday, 11th January, so we will need to hold over a report on that until next Sunday. There are however a few reminders, including coming events, that we can pass on.

2020 Membership fees to all those members who have not yet paid their 2020 subs, a reminder that you officially became listed as unfinancial on the register on 1 January. If you are in that boat, then this might be an appropriate time to remedy that situation.

In case you have forgotten, NTARC's 2020 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

As all listeners must be aware, the replacement of aging legacy equipment, along with other ongoing care and maintenance of our repeater systems, does not come cheap. For you to be able to continue to enjoy this aspect of your hobby and for NTARC to continue to provide this great network, we need your support now.

If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider rejoining. In either case, an application form can be found on our website

www.ntarc.net

or why not pop into the clubroom on a Monday or Friday when we re-open on Monday 6th January, during coffee hours and collect an application. You will be made most welcome.

If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater projects.

Club has reopened. The clubrooms re-opened last Monday 6 January with I'm told a very good roll-up, especially considering that we are still in the traditional holiday season. The regular twice-weekly coffee sessions are therefore again up and running. See you there on either a Monday or Fridayy morning, or both, from 10.00 am running through to around midday, but longer if members want to linger.
Coming events

Technical sessions for 2020 - we re-commence our Wednesday night tech sessions this coming week, on the 15th January. That means you now only have a couple of days in which to put the finishing touches to that project you intend to bring along to educate and entertain your fellow tech night colleagues.

February Annual General meeting - the Annual General Meeting of NTARC will take place on Wednesday 12th February 2020 at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street Rocherlea commencing at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm).

Business at the AGM will consist of confirmation of the Minutes of the 2019 AGM, then reception and consideration of reports from the Committee, including the Treasurer's report and reports from our various managers and coordinators. This will be followed by the election of officer bearers and committee person for 2020. The meeting will then consider any item of special business for which the requisite notice has been received by the closing date.

All current office holder and committee positions fall vacant at the AGM. Nominations for each office bearer and the Committee member are invited and should be made in writing to the Secretary, along with the signatures of the Nominator, Seconder and that of the member nominated. Appointments will also be required to the positions of Internal Auditor and Public Officer.

Please note that for your convenience a nomination form will be available from the NTARC club room from Monday 6th January 2020, our first day of opening for the coming year.

Members are reminded that they will need to have paid their 2020 renewal subscription before the meeting commences at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm) to be able to vote at the Annual General meeting. Similarly, they will need to have paid their 2020 subscription before they can be nominated or nominate or second someone for office, as only financial members can exercise those privileges.

The AGM will be followed by the February General meeting.

Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email them to the following address

	ntarc.emails @ gmail.com

However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.

As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.

73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania
DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up

We started in the studio with special guests Tony VK7VKT and Clayton VK7ZCR who took the audience through the radio monitoring, recording and uploading of the radio channels for the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race.

This involves the monitoring of the HF and VHF channels for some well know yacht industry journalists here in Australia and Spain. The audio from the receivers is fed into an application called BUTT which is integrated with a RaspberryPi and takes 5 minute grabs of the Audio and uploads these to a dropbox that the Journo's can review and write their articles for the various blogs and magazines.

Tony and Clayton also supply an extra service at the beginning of the race via a skype channel  through which they report almost real time on the action during the start and first day.

Tony also has a media pass to take photographs from the official media vessel and audio interviews with the movers and shakers on the lead boats. The interview included many photos, videos and the equipment involved. Thanks to Tony and Clayton.

Richard VK7ZBX and Hayden VK7HH then did a promo of the Summer VHF/UHF field day which occurs on the 18th and 19th of January 2020. Richard and Hayden will be operating club station VK7OTC from Mt Wellington with a focus on the Saturday afternoon. There will be much more structure during the day with contacts on the hour using FM to allow amateurs with just a handheld to be involved and make contacts. Thanks Richard and Hayden.

We then featured the following videos - VK-ZL 3cm VK7MO-ZL3RC contact, Argentinian EME, A21EME dxpedition to Botswana, 3DA0MB EME dxpedition to Swaziland, A35JT EME dxpedition to Tonga and the VKCL tutorial by Darren VK5DP.

We retired to the clubrooms for our VKCL mock contest but due to the lack notebooks in the room we have postponed until next week.

So this coming Wednesday will be a focus on the VKCL contesting software and the ease of use. We hopes to have Rex VK7MO in the studio with an outline of his recent VK-CL 3cm record breaking contact. So bring along your notebook with VKCL installed and we will be having a mock contest in the clubrooms to get people used to the VKCL contest logging software.

We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64To_tq1E7PfK1pqtX_vRw/

We get underway with the DATV Experimenter's Night from 7:30pm. See you there.

Technical News
Space Fence nearing operational acceptance by U.S. Air Force

According to NASA's most recent Orbital Debris Quarterly News, NASA calculates about 17.6 million pounds of objects are in earth orbit.

That number will only grow as more commercial space projects launch massive constellations with thousands of smallsats, presenting a huge problem for both U.S. government and commercial organizations.

That's where the U.S. Air Force's Space Fence will play a crucial role.

Using advanced solid-state S-band radar technology, the Space Fence radar located on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, it will play a critical role in the everyday lives of Americans who are becoming more dependent on space-based technologies for everything from weather forecasting, banking, global communications to GPS navigation.

Today, these critical services are being threatened by hundreds of thousands of objects and space debris orbiting the Earth. Frequent collisions and deterioration of assets, such as defunct satellites and rocket boosters, have increased the amount of space debris and raised the risk of future collisions in space.

The Air Force Space Surveillance Network currently tracks about 25,000 objects. When Space Fence comes online, the catalog will experience significant growth and when fully operational, Space Fence will be the worlds largest and most advanced radar system, providing unprecedented space situational awareness.

Beyond cataloging objects, Space Fence will detect closely-spaced objects, breakups, maneuvers, launches and conjunction assessments from LEO through GEO.

Space Fence is currently in a trial period and expected to become fully operational in 2020.

Fun to Finish
Even Dr Who and the Master use Morse Code

In the latest episode of the popular BBC TV series Dr Who the Doctor and her arch nemesis "The Master" were seen to communicate using a WWII radio set and morse key with the letter S , dit dit dit.

The Master just happened to have a morse key that he could use to return the signal and connect telekenetically with the Dr and tap out a series of S's.

The Dr makes the comment that it is their own special code used between Time Lords!

Even in a time when time and space travel is routinely used by the timelords there is room for Morse Code.
