Contest News
Summer VHF/UHF Field Day
The Summer VHF/UHF Field Day is coming up on the 18th and 19th of January from 01:00 UTC. Not much time under the bridge since the Spring field day so your gear should be already to go.
There will be quite a number of fellow vk7's out and about in a few locations and they would love to make a contact with you, but you don't have to go portable to participate.
Logging is easy as many of the logging programs will be aware of this contest and do all the point calculations. There will be activity from 6M all the way up to 3cm.
Why not look at building a new antenna for one of the VHF bands and see how far you can reach. There are sections for 8 Hours, for 24 Hours, Single or multiple operator stations so plenty of options.
Things got a little messy during the last field day so we are going to make a big attempt to include everybody that wants to make a contact. We plan to use more FM for contacts so that those without SSB equipment can get involved. So even a dual band hand held radio from a good location will be surprisingly efficient and capable.
Hope to hear you on the bands!

First 10 GHz QSO from Australia to ZL
On 30 December Rex VK7MO operating portable at Crescent Head in NSW worked Roger ZL3RC operating portable about 15 km North of Greymouth in the South Island of New Zealand. The intial QSO was on the QRA64-D digital mode with solid signals peaking -12 and -11 dB. An SSB QSO was also completed with reports of 3/1 both ways. The distance was 2040 km. The SSB contact is a NSW 10 GHz record. Rex was using a 76 cm dish and running 60 watts. Roger was using Rex's cut-up petal 113 cm dish and also running 60 watts.
The following day on 31 December 10 GHz signals were also detected but the frequency was drifting by up to 2 kHz a minute and not decodable on QRA64. After much head scratching Rex and Roger came to the conclusion that this was probably due to Rogers GPSDO losing lock. Roger then returned from the west coast to his home in Christchurch and picked up a replacement GPSDO and returned to the West Coast early on new years day morning after some 7 hours of driving. As soon as he set up Rex copied a strong signal tone and a QRA64 QSO was quickly completed with signals reports of -10 dB. An second SSB QSO was completed with 5/3 reports both ways. Signals continued to improve and a third SSB contact was completed with signals at 5/5 both ways, peaking up to 5/7. Aside from the problems with the GPSDO it appears that the band was open to ZL on 10 GHz for 3 days. The Hepburn chart showed an intense duct coloured Red to Pink for the three-day period.

------------------------------------------------------
Troppo activity this week in VK7.
On Monday the 30th of December the forecast was for temperatures in Hobart to climb to possible record-breaking levels of over 40 Degrees, so what better thing to do than pack up and go portable and try and work some DX on VHF and above?
This week the Hepburn charts have been indicating that there is a possibility of some really good conditions for trans-Tasman propagation, so it was decided that Tuesday would be a good day and so Hayden VK7HH and myself assembled some equipment and headed to quite a nice spot with an
excellent take off to ZL. Some time was spent organising some shade, and some power. We initially setup antennas for 2M, 70cm and 23cm and had 13cm and 9cm packed just in case.
We were on air at 22:00 UTC and upon calling CQ on 144.100 we contacted Nick ZL1IU. Signals were 5/9+20 from Nick. After peaking of the antennas and logging the contact (a first ZL on 2M for me) we asked Nick to come up on 432.150 and there he was, not strong but 5/1 both ways. This was another first for me, ZL on 70cm, so we asked Nick to call on 1296.100 but unfortunately, we couldn't make contact. Conditions on 2M were really good for most of the morning but didn't get any better for the higher bands. As the temperature had reached very high 30's by this stage and the wind was building we decided to pack up and head back to aircon for the rest of the day.
There were some really good contacts made between VK2, VK4 and ZL on lots of bands up to and including the first VK to ZL contact on 3cm, by our own VK7MO. I'm sure we will hear more about this upon Rex's return.

QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau
Herman advises that a number of the QSL cards recently received have been mailed or delivered to some Clubs and QTH's on an opportunity basis. As usual, the list of current cards held as at 16 December is in the email version of the broadcast. Feedback from Clubs as to which cards they can receive on behalf of members would be appreciated. Also, unless requested otherwise by those who have mail out arrangements, if there are only 1 or 2 cards for a station, Herman intends to hold those cards until there are enough to make a mail out more cost effective.
If time permits, Herman will also send in a list of the unclaimed cards that have been around for some time. If unclaimed in the next few weeks, they will be delivered to WIA Archives in Melbourne this coming January.
If you have any questions about QSL Cards being held, Herman can be contacted by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au
Herman would like to wish everybody a Safe and Happy Festive Season and take this opportunity to thank those Amateurs who have assisted him in distributing QSL cards in their area, your effort and support are very much appreciated.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
Fox Hunt
We will be having a BBQ and Fox Hunt to be held on the 11th January 2020.
We plan to start the BBQ at midday at Legion Park, off The Esplanade West Ulverstone, behind the Showgrounds. This is accessed by turning West into Maud Street off Queen Street. The site has two free electric Bar B Ques, and it is BYO food and drink. Then at 2pm we will commence the Fox Hunt, which will be along the style of the old fashioned CB Fox hunts, where the Fox hides, and then the chasers using signal strength's and clues, attempt to locate the Fox. The person who finds the Fox, then goes and hides, and we start the chase again. It will be run on Channel 50, 146.500 Mhz and operate in the Ulverstone Township, to allow people with handhelds to participate. We will continue while there are chasers for the Fox. If the weather is inclement, we will reschedule to the following Saturday.
We invite non club members to participate in the Event, and want it to be a fun family event, for not only Amateurs but
their families.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

With New Year celebrations been and gone we are now in 2020. We trust all celebrated in a safe manner. Fires are burning in a number of States and the loss of houses and lives is quite devastating. Warnings in New South Wales and Victoria for this Saturday are high. Let's hope we never see anything as catastrophic as these fires again in Tasmania.
On with the news, although as it is still the holiday season, not much has changed. If there have been any amazing developments on the local radio front, word has yet to reach your long-suffering scribe, so it will once again be largely a repeat of coming events.Â
2020 Membership fees to all those members who have not yet paid their 2020 subs, a reminder that you officially became listed as unfinancial on the register on 1 January. If you are in that boat, then this might be an appropriate time to remedy that situation.
In case you have forgotten, NTARC's 2020 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.
As all listeners must be aware, the replacement of aging legacy equipment, along with other ongoing care and maintenance of our repeater systems, does not come cheap. For you to be able to continue to enjoy this aspect of your hobby and for NTARC to continue to provide this great network, we need your support now.
If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider rejoining. In either case, an application form can be found on our website www.ntarc.net or why not pop into the clubroom on a Monday or Friday when we re-open on Monday 6th January, during coffee hours and collect an application. You will be made most welcome.
If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater projects.
Club reopens for all those members that have been having withdrawal symptoms due to lack of coffee and conversation, please note that we re-open tomorrow Monday 6thJanuary at 10.00am.
Coming events
January meeting to be held on Saturday 11th January. Please note that we will not be having a BBQ on this day due to many members still being away on holidays. The meeting will commence at 14:00 Hours (2.00pm) and will be followed by afternoon tea. Donations of cakes, slices etc to share would be greatly appreciated.
Technical sessions for 2020 we re-commence our Wednesday night tech sessions on the 15th January. In the meantime, keep busy designing and building in readiness for Show and Tell on that night.
February Annual General meeting the Annual General Meeting of NTARC will take place on Wednesday 12th February 2020 at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street Rocherlea commencing at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm).
Business at the AGM will consist of confirmation of the Minutes of the 2019 AGM, then reception and consideration of reports from the Committee, including the Treasurer's report and reports from our various managers and coordinators. This will be followed by the election of officer bearers and committee person for 2020. The meeting will then consider any item of special business for which the requisite notice has been received by the closing date.
All current office holder and committee positions fall vacant at the AGM. Nominations for each office bearer and the Committee member are invited and should be made in writing to the Secretary, along with the signatures of the Nominator, Seconder and that of the member nominated. Appointments will also be required to the positions of Internal Auditor and Public Officer.
Please note that for your convenience a nomination form will be available from the NTARC club room from Monday 6th January 2020, our first day of opening for the coming year.
Members are reminded that they will need to have paid their 2020 renewal subscription before the meeting commences at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm) to be able to vote at the Annual General meeting. Similarly, they will need to have paid their 2020 subscription before they can be nominated or nominate or second someone for office, as only financial members can exercise those privileges.
The AGM will be followed by the February General meeting.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, then please email them to the following address
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
However, it would be appreciated if any news could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
As always I look forward to seeing you at Rocherlea.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania
DATV Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Happy New Year to All from the DATV Experimenters.
It was great to see Jet VK7FJET along to the night.
The night was hosted by Justin VK7TW and Richard VK7ZBX. We started with Paul VK7FPCL who spotted a handy cable organiser bag from local gourmet grocer - Hill Street - it is a very nice calico bag with draw string and printed on the side is "Ham Bag"...HIHI.
Richard VK7ZBX took the audience through the recent 2m and 70cm ZL-VK contacts that Hayden VK7HH and Richard completed. We had virtual appearance from Rex VK7MO who completed the first Trans-Tasman 3cm contact on 30 December. Rex VK7MO operating portable at Crescent Head in NSW worked Roger ZL3RC operating portable about 15 km North of Greymouth in the South Island of New Zealand. This was both a Digital and Voice contact that was repeated the next day with even better results.
Richard then did a promo for the Summer VHF/UHF Field Day and this led to the development of the idea of running a VKCL live demo and contest practice to give people some experience with the VKCL software in pseudo-contact conditions.
Justin then sent out a congratulations to Dave VK5DG who has recently been awarded the Keith Roget Memorial Parks Award for completing contact in all 45 VK3 national parks using only satellite contacts!
Justin then took the audience through the UTC year changeover activation done earlier in the day on Collins Bonnet with pictures. We finished off the DATV presentation with some video from SOTA beams and Ham Radio Crash Course.
In the clubrooms Ron Cullen was testing the new Radio Control telemetry receiver X8R that has intriguing diversity 5.8GHz antennas that are PCB printed and the suggested mounting is to put them in a 90 degree arrangement to deal with the neither horizontal or vertical polarisation on the aircraft. The X8R provide a phenomenal range of telemetry and control functions for old and new servos, etc.
Richard showed his very nice 23cm power amplifier and arduino controller fresh from Russia and this will be pressed into service very soon from his QTH. We settled in to new year coffee and a great night was had by all.
This week we have a special requests for Tony VK7VKT and Clayton VK7ZCR to give an "Up Close and Personal" behind the scene's look at the communications monitoring that the media outlets rely on during the Sydney Hobart Yacht race. Both Clayton and Tony are involved with this monitoring. Tony is also involved with photography of the line honours winner that ends up going world-wide. This should be a fascinating interview with these guys.
The second part will be a VKCL question and answer and we will setup a pseudo-contest environment with each person on their notebooks with VKCL setup - making and logging contacts in a little mini contest. This will give people experience with the software in a real contest environment. So, bring your computer along with VKCL on it as well as your questions and it should be a great night.
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64To_tq1E7PfK1pqtX_vRw/

We get underway with the DATV Experimenter's Night from 7:30pm. See you there.
