QSL NEWS

Report - from Herman VK7HW  Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

Herman advises that a number of the QSL cards recently received have been mailed or delivered to some Clubs and QTH's on an opp
ortunity basis. As usual, the list of current cards held as at 16 December is in the email version of the broadcast. Feedback f
rom Clubs as to which cards they can receive on behalf of members would be appreciated. Also, unless requested otherwise by tho
se who have mail out arrangements, if there are only 1 or 2 cards for a station, Herman intends to hold those cards until there
are enough to make a mail out more cost effective.

If time permits, Herman will also send in a list of the unclaimed cards that have been around for some time. If unclaimed in th
e next few weeks, they will be delivered to WIA Archives in Melbourne this coming January.

If you have any questions about QSL Cards being held, Herman can be contacted by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Herman would like to wish everybody a Safe and Happy Festive Season and take this opportunity to thank those Amateurs who have
assisted him in distributing QSL cards in their area, your effort and support are very much appreciated.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST

CHAT AND SHOW GROUP

Our next gathering is on January 4th at the Sports Centre Ironcliffe Road Penguin at 2pm with drop in until 5pm and rooms open
until 6pm if necessary. Being holiday time and people travelling around, feel free to drop in if you are in Penguin on that day
. It is a good place to unwind after a hectic festive season. Amateurs and their partners from anywhere, if in town on the day,
are welcome. I hope to be monitoring channel 50.

We willingly accept a small plate for afternoon tea and I supply tea and coffee.

We are having a talk and display this time and I have been told it should be of special interest to F calls so come and have a
listen. Projects in progress or completed are welcome to be shown and talked about so bring them along.

I have been able to secure our location for another 12 months so hope to continue in the same happy style for at least that lon
g.

Thanks for all support during 2019 and seasons greeting to all.

With now only 3 more sleeps till that man in red arrives and as this is the final opportunity, it is time to wish everyone a Me
rry and Safe Christmas. For those of us travelling over this period please take it easy and obey all speed limits, as those men
in blue are busy at this time of year. The other thing to remember is donâ€Öt drive and use your mobile. That call can surely
wait until your next stop. Enjoy your Christmas feast with family and friends.

We now hand over to Idris VK7ZIR to provide you with a run down on the last technical session held on Wednesday 18th for 2019.

Technical session round - A great roll up for the last Technical Session for 2019.

Peter VK7KPC has been experimenting with filters and to this end has constructed a test bed using a base board with SMA connect
ors feeding input and output headers so that a circuit board carrying the filter components can be plugged on to them. This fac
ilitates the use of his NanoVNA with accompanying graphical software. The filter elements can then be adjusted while observing
the changing characteristics such as filter skirt slope and bandwidth on the VNA and laptop screens. The various filters are as
sembled on a standard plug-in board and thus can be taken out of circuit, adjusted on the jig, and replaced as required. Peter
demonstrated the process and also the measuring of the characteristics of a 160MHz filter for use in a WSPR setup using the Nan
oVNA. Good to see some innovation in test and measurement. Thanks Peter.

Trevor VK7TB was impressed with Peter's setup and has planned a demonstration of filter types and construction for the next cof
fee morning for all who are interested.

Ross VK7ALH, after a quick recovery from his surgery, came in with a military grade Grid Dip Oscillator housed in a metal case
with accompanying plug-in test coils. A very nice unit in very good condition. Unfortunately, to power it up required a 115 vol
t AC power source, which we did not have handy, so this will be the subject of a future session.

David VK7YY brought in his GDO and was using it to sweep an antenna coil. The dip was very sharp and touchy, so Trevor will bri
ng his GDO for comparison at the next coffee session.

Kevin VK7HKN had his Toughbook computer with a USB microscope and was demonstrating its uses.

Peter VK7PD arrived with a visitor. Ross, originally from Scotland, has settled in Tasmania and is interested in joining the Am
ateur Radio ranks, so we may be seeing more of him in the New Year.

There was a festive atmosphere with plenty of finger food on the table, and this was where the evening ended. The stayers gathe
red around the table with wide ranging discussions and Ebenezer VK7AT's fruity stories until later than usual. Much laughter an
d good cheer which is what we always hope for.

>From everyone at our Technical Sessions throughout 2019, we wish all a very happy and safe Christmas and we are looking forward
to more Amateur Radio fun in 2020.

73, Idris VK7ZIR

Sounds like a great night and it really is fantastic to see our members enjoying these technical sessions. Lots more in 2020.

2020 Membership fees

Just a reminder that your 2019 membership expires on 31 December and if you haven't renewed by that date you will then be liste
d as an unfinancial member on the register.

In case you have forgotten, NTARC's 2020 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family
member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

As all listeners must be aware, the replacement of aging legacy equipment along with other ongoing care and maintenance of our
repeater systems does not come cheap. For you to be able to continue to enjoy this aspect of your hobby and for NTARC to contin
ue to provide this great network, we need your support now.

If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership la
pse for any reason, please consider rejoining. In either case, an application form can be found on our website www.ntarc.net or
why not pop into the clubroom on a Monday or Friday when we re-open on Monday 6th January, during coffee hours and collect an
application. You will be made most welcome.

If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct
donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, e
ither in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be acce
pted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater project.

Christmas and New Year closure

Our club room has officially closed for 2019, the last day for coffee was Friday 20th December. To give all members and especia

Finally

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH

Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania

DATV Experimenter's Night

We start by wishing everyone Seasons Greetings from the DATV Studio.

Our guest for the night was Glenn Alldis showing the restoration of a 1940s AWA 450-P portable AM valve radio. This model was c
alled the fridge model as it was walnut Bakelite and sat upright with a door that opened and started the radio. The loop antenn
a was in the door and there were two knobs - tuning and volume.

Glenn took the audience through the concepts of a super heterodyne radio and the innovative circuit using four valves powered b
y 1.5V batteries for the filament and 63V from 7 x 9V batteries. Glenn also had a "deconstructed" 1R5 heptode valve that we loo
ked at in close-up. Thanks Glenn.

We then looked at a 1990 portable Garmin GPS navigation unit. We touched on the new Elecraft K4 and the ICOM IC-705. We did a p
romo for the WIA "Future of Amateur Radio" and the WIA Conference being held in Hobart over the 8-10 May 2020. We finished up w
ith a range of videos including the K4, IC-705, the "amateurs Night before Christmas" and the history of the transistor.

We retired to the clubrooms to enjoy coffee and Christmas fare!

Richard VK7ZBX and Hayden VK7HH were working on correcting the TCXO frequency in Richard's IC-736 satellite transceiver.

Justin VK7TW and Ron Cullen were working on a faulty RaspberryPi 7 inch touch screen from Justin's HPSDR. There was a segment o
f the display that would not respond to touch input which made the touch control of the HPSDR somewhat difficult.

Alan, VK7KAJ, and others, were in a discussion about Reverse Polish Notation HP calculators in between mince pies!

We get back underway on Christmas Day night for our special Christmas DATV Night from 7:30pm. A quick survey of the attendees s
howed some interest in playing radio on Christmas night using all those wonderful new radios that have appeared under the Chris
tmas tree. See you there.

We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tu
ne to 445.5MHz, and do a scan for a DVB-T signal, and, you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving
the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel and Facebook.
