With Feb. 13, being Mardi Gras, Easter is on March
31...so the PCL Net will be QRT on Monday, April 1,
and that's no April Fool (hi hi).
We had severe weather in Arkansas last Friday night,
with 2 inch hail at Hot Springs, and an EF-1 tornado
just south-southeast of Little Rock. Today, there was
snow in northern Arkansas. I had to abort doing the
Trains Net last Friday, but weather is calmer for now.
But, our severe weather awareness week is coming up in
the next 2 weeks, as is our spring tornado season, plus
the pollen. The car washes will make a killing (hi hi).
I was released from hip surgery mobility restrictions
last Thursday, so I square danced for the first time
in at least five years this past Saturday, and I've
been very sore as a result; having worked muscles I
haven't exercised in a long time. My club has started
lessons, and I am going to take part on Wednesday
evenings, to get exercise, and help a lady friend get
back into it (she's a divorcee, and older than I am).
I'm also going to print items for her, as her printer
bit the dust, as it were...and she'll pay for the paper
and ink.
I didn't watch the Super Bowl, but was looking for The
Supper Bowl. I saw a meme with Maxine from Crabby Road
(who loves her attitude problem), noting that "A Super
Bowl is a toilet that cleans itself" (hi hi). I can't
believe the 49ers players had no idea of the rules with
overtime...but they still got a sizable paycheck, even
with the loss...even if they never played a down in the
game. Must be nice to get tens of thousands of dollars
for doing nothing for several hours...especially since
a 30 second commercial was in the millions of dollars!!
This morning, I had a bad migraine sinus headache,
with all the other pain, so I ended up postponing an
appointment with the denture doctor, to fix a broken
tooth on the lower plate, until next month. The pain
meds have meant extra slumber time, but I had a very
bad night last night...and I'm still tired and hurting
now. So, I'll post the scribe from tonight's net
tomorrow, after I make a Post Office Box run, and a
quick trip to the bank, to deposit a reimbursement
check; but I will be at home much of the week.
I got an updated version of RMS Express (what I use
for WL2K), but I didn't get any new mail, which is
fine with me. I also updated the SharkRF OpenSpot 4
Pro last week, but every so often, the app for it
crashes on the Windows 11 system, and I have to call
up the Task Manager to kill the app, then reload it.
I'm also now the VHF+ Net Manager for the Quarter
Century Wireless Association (QCWA). So much for
NAVY (Never Again Volunteer Yourself)(hi hi).
The time change to Daylight Savings Time is on
Sunday, March 10. Most net times won't change, but
UTC times will be one hour earlier. Check with the
various net controls for the net times (the time
for this net won't change, for those that go to DST).

Another uneventful week.
Good to see the Chiefs win last night! It was a nail
biter though!
On the radio front I upgraded my hotspots to Pistar
4.2.0 - The DMR hotspot went without a hitch - the
DStar hotspot blew chunks (a technical term ) the
first time, had to do it again. They both seem ok now.
I even added DMR to YSF cross moding on my DMR hotspot -
that seems to be working ok too.
Other than that, just trying to keep warm now that
cooler weather has returned!
Scott, depending on what pony express they put it on,
you should see it later this week!

GE all, busy weekend here.
Saturday was the Orlando hamfest, and I drove out, and
spent the morning there. It is pretty much the same every
year. I saw most of the same vendors, mostly in the same
locations. Our local club here in Melbourne had a booth,
which is a nice change.
I don't think there were as many tables outside as usual,
even though the weather was fine. Not sure what's up with
that.
There was one guy, though, with a whole lot of cool WWII
surplus radio gear.
Saturday afternoon I headed down to EPCOT for a few hours.
Since I have an annual pass, it does not cost me anything
to park or enter the park (though the pass itself is $$$).
I stayed overnight, so I could head back to the hamfest
Sunday morning for NWS Skywarn training ... so now I will
have my Skywarn card up to date again. The presentation was
very nice, almost 2 hours!
After that it was just the drive home. I am about an hour
and a quarter away from Orlando, so I try to stay overnight
at a cheap motel when I go. I don't like driving out and
back the same day.
Anyway, it was a nice weekend. I am still a bit stiff from
all the walking, but overall pleased with the weekend.
Rick reminded me that there was an AMPRNET booth at Hamcation.
They had a sample of a router box they are "working on" that
will automatically link and route the the AMPRNET ... so maybe
we can look forward to that.
Also, it is always amazing how hard a simple serial connection
can be, Scott.

Good evening Daryl and all on NET!
Another uneventful week...I spent most of the time trying to
figure out how to use AMPRNET, and to make things worse,
attempting to get JNOS going on an ubuntu machine. I got
nowhere...and the time just melted away.
We some more snow the last couple of days, maybe 2 or 3
inches accumulation. The temp right now is about 40F and
the white stuff is disappearing.
Just waiting for the sun to come out and get rid of this
constant gloomy weather.

Attempted to revive an old project I built around 2016. It is
an Autonomous Satellite Tracker, originally written up in an
article by Elwood Downey, WB0OEW. The first version was based
on an Arduino, which I successfully built. The second version
was released around 2018 and was based on an Arduino ESP8266.
I had started converting to the 2nd version sometime during
Covid, but never completed it. (Too busy watching Netflix?)

When I started fooling around with it a few weeks ago, I
managed to release the magic smoke in one of the servos.
Luckily there was one available on ebay, which I received
today. Hopefully the problem was in the old servo, and not
something else that will fry the new one!

We got about 2 inches of snow, and it is all gone, except for
a few spots in the shade.
BTW Daryl, glad to hear you are up and dancing again!!

It has been a good week. Tomorrow Jackie sees a Neuro surgeon
for a consultation.
I also did the pi-star update. I also spent a good deal of
the weekend trying to get a tnc operational. I kept getting
trash symbols when I connected like the baud rate is wrong
I finally tracked it down to the HP thinclient I was using
for a terminal because it had a real com port. It worked fine
until the terminal got warm.
To NS2B thank you for the modem. I do appreciate it.

Bob (NY), I didn't even watch the game, as I had computer
work to do after the QCWA Digital Net. FB on the Hotspot
PiStar Upgrades. Winter isn't over yet.
Carl, it looked like they had a good crowd at Hamcation.
At least the weather was good. Wonder if the guy with the
WWII surplus gear sold any of it?? FB on the EPCOT pass...
I'm sure the cost makes up for it...and it doesn't include
in the park purchases, like food and drink. I need to get
recertified in Skywarn, but would have to do it via Zoom,
since I don't drive anymore. The walking would've done me
in for sure!! I remember the serial and telnet port issues
with my BBS!!
Rick, GL with the AMPRNET and JNOS issues. Not sure if we'll
get more snow here or not...I think the worst of this arctic
cold will be in the Ohio Valley instead of the MidSouth.
It'll be back to gettting the lawn mowed next month. We'll be
begging for rain come summer.
Bob (OK), FB on the autonomous satellite tracker, but hate
those "smoke tests". Glad you could get a replacement.
Meteorological spring starts March 1st. It's good to be
dancing, and I didn't get short of breath...which is good,
considering I have congestive heart failure.
Scott, hope all goes well with the neurosurgeon consultation
for Miss Jackie. FB on the PiStar update...and GL on getting
the TNC working.
