MD 0371 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 109...110... FOR CENTRAL ALABAMA
Mesoscale Discussion 0371 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0850 PM CDT Sun Apr 12 2020
Areas affected...central Alabama
Concerning...Tornado Watch 109...110...
Valid 130150Z - 130245Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 109, 110 continues.
SUMMARY...Storms are intensifying as they move into central Alabama,
with local enhancement to the tornado risk evident.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows a couple of storms intensifying
within the broader north-northwest to south-southeast band of storms
crossing Alabama and southeast Mississippi. The two strongest storms
-- one moving into Cullman County and the other crossing Tuscaloosa
county -- appear most intense at this time, with the southern
storm likely having produced a tornado recently (70 kt rotational
velocity and a small CC minimum have been observed within the past
15 minutes). As this storm continues moving north-northeastward,
through the very favorable thermodynamic and kinematic environment
that remains in place, the potential for a strong tornado and/or
damaging wind gusts has increased for areas near and northwest
of Birmingham.

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 111...
Valid 130056Z - 130300Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 111
continues.
SUMMARY...Damaging wind and hail will likely continue for the
next couple hours across remaining portions of WW 111 and WW 108.
A downstream WW will be considered pending convective trends.
DISCUSSION...Storms with a history of damaging wind gusts continue
with bowing segments/embedded rotation in an extensive linear
segment moving through central/north-central Arkansas at this time.
These storms should affect the Little Rock Metro area over the next
half hour or so. These storms are moving quickly east-northeastward
and should reach the eastern extent of WW 111 in Arkansas by around
0230Z or so. CAMs suggest that this activity will hold together
beyond that time frame, with intensity in question as the downstream
airmass has been overturned from prior convection. Nevertheless,
forcing aloft with the vigorous upstream impulse may result in at
least an isolated severe threat after 230Z in downstream areas.
A new Watch may be needed and will be coordinated with downstream
offices beforehand.
Farther south, cells/clusters in northern Louisiana and northeast
Texas have also produced wind damage and hail, and these trends
should continue through the next couple hours as well.

Mesoscale Discussion 0368 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0736 PM CDT Sun Apr 12 2020
Areas affected...southeast Mississippi/central and southern Alabama
Concerning...Tornado Watch 110...
Valid 130036Z - 130200Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 110 continues.
SUMMARY...Severe/tornado risk continues across WW 110.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows a couple of rotating cells
moving east-northeastward across the northwestern corner of the
WW at this time -- i.e. Greene/Sumter County area in Alabama.
The broader band of convection that includes these storms
extends south-southwestward into eastern Louisiana, where a few
well-organized storms are occurring. This convection will spread
into western portions of WW 110 over the next hour -- sustained by
an axis of 1500 to 2000 J/kg mixed-layer CAPE over the southwestern
corner of Alabama. Given the background kinematic environment
that remains strongly supportive of supercells, severe risk --
including potential for tornadoes -- continues.

...THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS EASTERN
MS INTO MUCH OF AL AND WESTERN GA...
...SUMMARY... An outbreak of severe thunderstorms is likely
through tonight, with the greatest threat expected across parts
of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Strong tornadoes, widespread
damaging winds, and large hail are all possible.
...01Z Update...
The main changes to the outlook this update were to remove much of
OK/TX from severe probs. The exception being across far northeast
TX where severe storms are currently ongoing. Probs have also been
removed from all of IA and all but far southern MO/IL. The Moderate
risk has been trimmed on the western edge behind the main line
of storms across eastern MS. Further east, Slight and Enhanced
probabilities have been expanded eastward from southern VA into
central NC toward the SC/GA coasts and along the FL Panhandle. This
is based on timing of the developing intense line/cluster of storms
from eastern MS into northern GA, which will continue quickly
spreading east/northeast overnight.
Intense cells are expected to continue shifting east/northeast
tonight across AL/GA and into the Carolinas. Regional VWP
data continues to show large, curved hodograph supportive of
embedded supercell structures within the developing line/storm
clusters. Even if eventual storm mode transitions to a more
cohesive QLCS, mesovortex tornadoes are possible. Furthermore, 50+
kt south/southwesterly winds as low as 500-750 feet, indicating
the intense low level jet, will support widespread damaging wind
gusts into early Monday morning.

A doctor calls his patient to give him the results of his tests. "I have
some bad news," says the doctor, "and some worse news." The bad news is
that you only have six weeks to live."
"Oh, no," says the patient. "What could possibly be worse than that?"
"Well," the doctor replies, "I've been trying to reach you since
last Monday."
